New Apple iPad Pro review roundup: not quite ready to replace laptops

05 November 2018
But getting closer, if only iOS would pick up the slack. The accessories - Pencil and Smart Keyboard Folio - were ruled essential.

What they're still getting wrong is comparing a mobile processor to a desktop or laptop processor.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2018No 3.5mm jack as STANDARD from iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 (2018) ... moreTypical Samsung fan hater

As an iPad Pro user I don't really see a reson to upgrade.
iOS is far from being usefull OS for work and the quality of apps is an issue as well.
iPad Pro is a great tablet not a replacement for Surface, notebook and sure as hell not a desktop replacement.

Unless iOS and it's app moves forward this will remain in a toy depertement or sketchbook for people that draw.

No 3.5mm jack as STANDARD from iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 (2018) onward = FAIL (Why remove it?? There is SPACE for the 3.5mm jack. Heck even the slimmest phone from 2010s had a 3.5mm jack!)

No microsd slot since the 1st iPad (2010) = FAIL (Come on, Apple, it's almost a decade & you couldn't bother adding one for convenience sake. Your customers should have choices instead of forcing them to use CLOUD with LIMITED storage all the time!)

No Home Button from iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 (2018) onward = FAIL (How are the 1st timers going to navigate?? Using gestures?? If the bottom of the screen were to crack one day, you're pretty much f****d!!)

No Touch ID from iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 (2018) onward = FAIL (Face ID will NEVER BE AS SECURE as Touch ID for privacy, security reasons!!)

Non-backwards compatible Apple Pencil = FAIL (Just planned obsolescence!!)

Are the new iPad Pro(s) built for "KIDS" or the target audience, business customers?? Just get a Galaxy Tab S4 instead for an all-rounded experience and features if you don't really care about the 1 year old processor so long it is fast enough for your needs. OR just get a laptop for an all-rounded experience with all the STANDARD ports.

Crapple and their laughable charging and zillions of bugs and bloatware with every single update. They will never ever replace anything apart in future android will replace IOS.

I was kind of hoping Apple would bring it with the new iPads or put macOS on an ARM pwoered device. Then other OEMs would have some kind of template to follow. But I do have to say Samsung did an excellent job of turning Android into a desktop experience. If you don't need to to do serious crunching or content creation it is perfectly feasible for consumption, research, games optimized for mobile experiences, multitasking and even movie watching. I really think somebody could steal the thunder from Apple and Microsoft if they came out with a serious desktop OS and optimized for ARM architecture. I could see a 8-16 core CPU and a serious GPU from Imagination technologies or nVidia still be more efficient overall than a traditional desktop or laptop. They would have to do the OS, make a very good word processor, email client, a few browser options, get Adobe to make some optimized software like they did for Apple. I am dreaming though. Would like to see it happen and not Apple do it because then the Apple tax would make apple richer and the ecosystem limited.

It can never replace current productivity tasks. You need laptops or workstation. You need lots of switching between apps, lots of RAM, comfortably placed keyboard and MOUSE. Pencil is only good for certain applications but can't avoid MOUSE in a pro setup. IPad is a great device for content consumption and very light weight pro tasks for an unreasonable price! For $1000 I get for more superior options in the laptop world
