New Apple iPad Pro review roundup: not quite ready to replace laptops

05 November 2018
But getting closer, if only iOS would pick up the slack. The accessories - Pencil and Smart Keyboard Folio - were ruled essential.

It has fast chipset, but you are locked to their OS. Real laptops can run Windows, Linux, and Android (X64 and arm), and they have more features, too.

That's the only and BIG problem right now: you need to recompile your programs to fully use all the power of the SoC and be in "equal terms". Right now, a lot of stuff is emulated, that why the difference is so abysmal.

An A12X will still be much much faster than that snapdragon, but nowhere near those scores, probably just half of them.

Yeah you said it right how it can replace my laptop?
        -no mouse support
        -no real file management
        -no real multitasking
        -no desktop browser

Laughable and overpriced, to compared it to a high end laptop is nothing short of stupidity, it isn't a laptop, and it runs washed down apps, and it's not even compatible with the monitors its supposed to connect to, u have to pay More for adaptors and can't connect storage drives, there is nothing pro about this device, its processor is the only stand out thing and even that will never be tested to its potential

q8peace , 05 Nov 2018I agree with you this is so stupidI can't believe this has to be explained to people. Nobody is giving up their desktop grade Intel or AMD chips for a damn iPad.

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2018What do you mean? iPad Pro outperforms Core i7 in some task... moreYou know, I would have thought Qualcomm would have been an amazing case study in why you shouldn't promote mobile processors as having desktop and laptop grade performance. Remember how the SD 835 typically benched on GB on phones? 1900 SC, 6700+ Multi? Qualcomm didn't get close to that performance on their Windows PCs. Fairly certain the same would happen if Apple actually powered a Macbook Pro with the A12. We know Apple will be manufacturing their own chips for laptops and desktops soon, but I'm sure the actual design and TDP will differ from the mobile A12.

The iPad Pro doesn't make me want to give up a hexacore laptop or even a 15W quad core 2 in 1. It actually makes me thankful these options still exist. But we'll see what happens by 2020 when Apple is doing their own chipsets for laptops and desktops

so either you did not tried linux on touch device recently or are completely un aware of situation.
I am curious what exactly you think as core functionalities of a tablet? please explain and let me and others to see what you could not do on a windows tablet.
I am not completely but mostly with you on android. It is not much optimized and need some tweaking.

I want a tablet that first and foremost does EVERYTHING a tabled should do. Everything else is just extra stuff.

Windows tablets have the extras but do not cover the basics, the core functionalities of a tablet. And android... that is just too big of a mess overall, you can barely get the OS working so that is basicly usable. It also misses a lot of functionality and is not optimized for large screens. It even has trouble maintaining font sizes, dialog boxes, and other visual elements consistent across all its screens on devices larger than 4.5 inches.

If it's still too difficult, here is the answer: they compared the ipad to a Surface Pro 6 (core i5) and a XPS 13 (core i7). The ipad crushed them at adobe rush (video editing) and adobe lightroom (photo editing)

Android tablets are irrelevant to any person with a functional brain and don't deserve to be mentioned at all.

"That said, that the A12X Bionic chipset is so powerful that it outperformed Core i7-based laptops in some tasks (while being thinner and lighter and offering great battery life to boot)."

                            It is not that simple!
Did they mentioned what i7 one? it roughly can be on par with a U series with the same TDP (which means those very weak ones) where the ones with more TDP can crash it in blink of eye!
So as usual apple started to advertise BS like they said iphone 7 can do PS4 grade graphic performance while it was nothing but a lie!
This is good device but there are better ones at the same price with more power like Surface pro 6(256GB / Intel Core i5 / 8GB RAM) and it's full windows experience also you can add Linux to it for more in almost the same price!
So basically it is only for those who love apple and are fans not for those who seek pro grade device(need to add there is Surface Laptop 2 at the same price and still better)

The only scenarios I can think of for using the ipad for work are tasks that require a very portable device. For example showing quick designs and emails to your boss, using it for projectors etc. otherwise If your work can be done while sitting on a desk you are always better off with a laptop/desktop.
And lets not forget ios is not fully optimized for work yet as you dont get a proper file system nor proper multitasking( only max of two windows side by side and slow to set up).
Even the lack of desktop os software shows that it could not replace your desktop/laptop.
So why pay 1000+ $ for this is the real question. It is even more expensive once you add the keyboard and other accessories.
