New Apple iPad Pro review roundup: not quite ready to replace laptops

05 November 2018
But getting closer, if only iOS would pick up the slack. The accessories - Pencil and Smart Keyboard Folio - were ruled essential.

It was never targeted ro replace laptops in first place, it is actually more of the prototype what to expect in a future. Apple jist showing off here, and telling to qualcomm or Intel "you completely screwed!". Ipad it is marvelous technological achievement. A12x it is as huge deal as than firs desktop processors reached 1ghz mark. Embrace these moment tech lovers, you expereincing cpu history here. A12x will be use as example in history books of one of the first chipset who changed mobile CPU market forever.

Anonymous, 06 Nov 2018I'm not trolling. I'm telling you Apple is ripping off cust... moreThat would most likely be all laptops. 1 in 20 uses expensive laptops?

I mean, seriously, what vendor do you expect to say that their device sucks and that it's a worthless piece of shit? Apple's numbers are at least valid. Whether you find it useful or can afford it is an entirely different issue and doesn't make somebody liers. I can think of multiple people (with the requisite disposable income) that I know who would prefer to use the pro than a laptop. Power isn't everything, convenience is important too. If it doesn't meet your needs or your budget, nobody is forcing you. Most people who can afford it aren't fools and can decide for themselves.

AnonD-59899, 06 Nov 2018lol Whatever... No point wasting my time explaining things ... moreI'm not trolling. I'm telling you Apple is ripping off customers by falsely claiming/suggesting that its obscenely priced iPad Pro's are productivity devices made for professionals and can compete with serious productivity laptops. Apple even claims faster processor speeds than 92% of laptops! Really? Which price bracket are we talking about? If it's the same laptop price range as the iPad Pro, then Apple's claim of the iPad Pro being faster than 92% of those laptops is a blatant lie. At best, the claims are half truths and at worst, blatant lies. Now if you really don't like a Wintel laptop, then by all means get a Macbook Pro laptop with an intel core i9-8950HK processor. That's real power and not some fake power Apple likes to claim with its expensive kiddie toys for rich kids and teens - the iPad Pros.

No point wasting my time explaining things to somebody who is just trolling and wouldn't try to understand. And just so you know, several companies don't even allow usage of Windows. And even if they did, Ryzen is better for working than Intel. Oh well, why am I explaining things again to an anonymous troll?! *facepalm*

Anonymous, 06 Nov 2018It is a true tablet indeed. And being the only one in town ... moreTablets are good media consumption devices, but not those with 4:3 screens (most of the content is 16:9), not in terms of resolution, since almost no tablet has a 4K screen, not in a sense of sound - since some tablets do not even have 3,5mm jack, to connect it to something decent so you can enjoy the sound, no surround support and do not forget the thing ... ergonomics - stand is a must-have unless you do not value your neck, hands etc.
Tablets are good for media consumption, not great, not incredible, they are but a compromise to other mature devices.
Still, I personally own 4 tablets in my household, they are a great thing if you lie on the couch, too lazy to get in my DxRacer and wait 10 sec for my PC too boot up, so I can read an email.

A tablet is not a productivity or a working horse device. Its main features are thinness, lightness, and the ability to fully use it without any keyboard, mice, or any other accessories.

For daily needs, I would much rather carry an iPad around with me instead of a laptop of any kind. And if I need to do some office work, I would turn to my workstation-laptop.

                - Smartphones
                - Phablets
                - Tablets/Laptops 7"-13" [personal productivity, entertainment, some games, lightweight work, small and portable]
                - Workstation-laptops 14"-17" [business/work productivity, portable workhorse or portable gaming rig]
                - Desktop computer [full productivity workhorse / gaming rig / entertainment / etc.]

Biggest issue is lack of mouse/trackpad functionality. I do not want to be working on data heavy excel sheets or word documents using my finger or a stylus, it just doesnt work. I also want to be able to attach USB peripherals as and when I need, which is something you cannot do on an ipad. This will never be a laptop replacement till mouse functionality is added, irrespective of how fast it is. As it stands, Android tablets are more useful in every way. And I have not even mentioned file management as an issue.

And the assertion that the soc is faster than an i7 machine in some tasks is a joke to be honest. Try encoding a 4k video on an i7 laptop and this and compare the results. Also try running SPSS on an ipad pro and come back to me.

Only kids and teens use iPads. iPad Pro doesn't change that even with that overpriced Apple pencil. It's still a tablet for playing mobile games, Facebook and Youtube and sketching kiddie doodles. If you want professional, get a real Windows laptop with core i7 xxxxHQ processor or higher.

2nd the Xps 13 CPU is a core i7-8550U which is not really powerful (https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-13/spd/xps-13-9360-laptop) and as i mentioned before every thing other than U series would crash A12X.

Not Apple's fault for milking such a lucrative market. I think the rest should had at least tried to compete. It sells more than laptops (tablets are) for a reason, they are the best media consumption devices in the world and that's mostly what people do with their computers. For work thou can always have a proper laptop that you only use for work, but for everything else this is light years ahead.

Given how much more capable is it from -say- iPhone it is a steal.

I much prefer to have which end tablet which lasts for years + a budget phone instead of a high end phone , squinting over the screen to use even one tenth of its capacities.

Way too far to be a laptop but for the price of a flagship laptop

Any cheap core i7 xxxxHQ laptop will crush the iPad Pro. Yes, even those costing half the most expensive storage option iPad Pro. Get real! Overpriced iPads will never beat even midrange priced i7xxxxHQ laptops. Laprop magazine has to settle with weak i5 and weak core i7 xxxxU mobile processors so the ipad will look good.
