Anonymous, 09 Nov 2018Also, Gsmarena's site should have a dark mode or night mode... moreThere's a chrome extension called dark reader that transforms all websites into night mode with white text on black background

Also, Gsmarena's site should have a dark mode or night mode toggle like Dpreview's website. Black backgrounds and white text just looks more pleasing and comfortable for reading text and watching photos and videos IN ELECTRONIC displays in soft indoor lighting which is where most reading and electronic device use takes place. White backgrounds and black texts in electronic displays should only be the default if you are doing something that needs to be printed in paper. (You need to see exactly how your print will look like). Other than that, dark mode (black/dark backgrounds and white text) in electronic displays are vastly better.
Why then does black text printed on white bondpaper feel comfortable? Because black ink on white paper doesn't radiate/illuminate any high intensit light to your eyes. It's different with electronic displays which give off their own light. And for that, a dark mode is better (at least, if you are only into media consumption/reading and have no intention to create content that will need to be printed in paper).

Nokia had done this a long time ago. I remember my Nokia N8 with an amoled screen and the Nokia Clear Black Display. If i can remember so well i think there were models with that even before N8. And for those saying it was Microsoft please it wasn't, Microsoft only continued with the technology. You can search old Nokia phones and you will all find out Nokia used the clear black display along time ago.

Thesis86, 09 Nov 2018Microsoft had this figured out...with Windows Phone in like... moreMicrosoft got a lot of things right with Windows Phone, except the fact they charged OEMs for preinstalling Windows Phone which led to fewer OEM adoption which then led to fewer Apps by developers which then led to lower consumer interest, and the spiral of more fewer Apps or late App arrival, that is what eventually killed Windows Phone.

This just in: Google has determined the sky to be blue, water to be wet and LG P-OLED panels to be unreliable.

Lol, Google being an almost Trillion Dollar company is realising it just now while a small company like OnePlus is providing full system wide Black Theme ever since OnePlus 2/3.
Google, we only expect this from you - Blacken Up Everything. Don't do just the dark mode. Turn in into Pitch Black. That not only looks better but is even more efficient for Amoled screens.

Hopefully this finding would get more and more OEMs to use OLED on most, if not all, of their devices.
Samsung and LG could benefit from selling their OLED screens for others to be used on budget and mid range smartphones, while JDI (along with Sony) could benefit from selling their OLED panels for others to be used on high end devices (except Samsung and LG, who are obviously going to use their own ones instead).
Yes, I said JDI for flagship and Samsung and/or LG for mid range and budget. If JDI's first OLED smartphone screen (seen on the XZ3) is already as good as Samsung's 9th generation of Super AMOLED, then it can still surpass it if they continue the same level of improvement each year.

My mum tell me to turn off light (dark mode) when not in use to save electricity. I thought this is common sense.

Hopefully more dark mode versions of Google's apps to come. Play Movies and YouTube certainly look better in dark mode. Now if only Chrome, Playstore and Google News also have a dark mode. Also the default Android user interface should be dark.. Those eye piercing whites indoors in soft lighting is so irritatingnand is reminiscent of Apple's jurassic iphones.

Congrats for Google for barely catching up to something Microsoft figured out nearly 10 years ago. So can every phone have a native dark mode?

They just now know about this now ? I thought it was general knowledge. Heck, samsung (and some) even marketed how AMOLED could cut power consumption by taking benefit from android lollipop black theme. But when Google come up with marshmellow, samsung end up tweak their UI accordingly (read : not black), and loosing one perk of having an OLED.
