Weekly poll: are pop-ups better than sliders?

18 November 2018
Both motorized pop-ups and manual sliders offer a way to circumvent the notch. But which design is better?

One more time bar phones will take the crown when hideable front cameras come. (Foldable phones will be most advanced and best option but they will be much more expensive and they will create a new ultra-premium segment. For example we assume s10+ 1049$, note 10 1149$, galaxy f or x 1799 $. All they are flagships but foldable one is beyond them and in a different segment. Thats why i didnt include foldable phones against bar phones.)

I think in terms of longevity, sliders are more reliable, even though I would prefer a phone with neither.

Google Pixel 2 XL's bezels are fine, so are those of the Sony Xperia XZ3. Those on the Galaxy S9/Note 9 and Meizu 16th are even better and would be perfect for me if they had front facing stereo speakers.

I don't get the need for a true bezelless phone. Some bezel actually makes it more managable and makes it so you don't need software based palm rejection and possibly an entire software redesign to make best use of a fully bezelless smartphone.

(Sure, it would look good if it "wraps around the frame of the phone completely to get a true 100% screen-to-body ratio", but you don't really gain anything at all with a design like that.)

I never had and never will use this "i love my self" camera. So with those choices here, i go for the waterdrop notch, I'm convinced this is more durable when time goes.
I know some will think if i dont use the camera, why i go for notch then. I simply not trust the other.

Tough one manual sliders are good for fidgeting and pop up look cooler, I voted slider because imo those are better for long term

Honestly i don't give a rats ass about the front camere, but i hate the notch with a vengence ... so manual slider it is.

At first, I thought manual sliders are better, but.. I rarely use front camera at all, so why do I need any mechanism to access it, if I won't use it? And I also like front facing stereo speakers, so in the end, bar phones are better :)

zillion, 18 Nov 2018Don't understand why gsmarena take a manual slider phone to... moreIf I remember correctly, Honor Magic 2 leaked way earlier than Mi Mix 3.

Small pop-ups for me, it's the most durable one in my opinion, because it only includes a small pop-up front camera, whereas for the big sliders, it houses the front and rear cameras. Sure it does look best aesthetically in my opinion, but as for structural integrity, it suffers. Motorized or not, it ain't as durable as the small pop-up that houses the front camera. If it's for the functionality side, I would choose the HONOR MAGIC 2's manual slider over all the other motorized pop-ups and sliders

I prefer motorised sliders. They offer a sense of luxury and cool factor that normal manual sliders don't have, despite the latter being more durable.

Having said that, the parts on a manual slider will ALSO wear out the snappy/clicky feel over time, not to mention because it's manual, people tend to play/fidget with the mechanism much, much more than a motorised version, possibly making them both wear out at similar times.

Its a lot less prone to breaking than what you initially suspect, and the smaller size means when its tucked in it is sturdier than the full-sliders wether they're Auto or Manual. And the smaller periscope function takes less internal space, which helps to stuff a larger battery.

However, as much as I praise the Vivo Nex S, I do NOT think its the right solution. I think having a small notch, or even better, slim bezels is the better choice. It just keeps moving parts away from a slippery, dense, and fragile device. And you gain more internal space....
....Eventually I would like to see all high-end phones get the notch. But not a stupid teardrop notch like the Huawei Mate 20, nor a behemoth notch like the iPhone X. I want them to get a medium sized notch like the OnePlus 6. And I want notches on both ends, and to house front-firing stereo loudspeakers. The webcam can hide underneath a flexible (SAM)-OLED display, as long as screen burn-in is mitigated, it doesn't need a notch. The worst thing about modern flagships isn't the notch, its the pointlessly long 19.5:9 aspect ratio (that needs to come down to 16:9-slim bezel or 17:9-notch)

Manual sliders are best. It will work till the end of phone's life unless physically damaged. If motorised sliders fail after some duration, there's nothing can be done except taking it to service centre

I would prefer if it slides inside the phone, would end the notches while keeping outside without moving parts. Well, the best would be transparent screen...

Don't understand why gsmarena take a manual slider phone to honor magic 2, not the mi mix 3 as the first launcing manual slider flagship phone before the honor magic 2?
