Apple dialing down iPhone production, as sales come below targets

If you read my reply to you i mentioned that Apple is quite innovative in how FaceID is implemented. So, i gave them credit where there is due. But point of contention here is how innovative Apple is in last 2/3 years, in bringing latest to the market even before the competition does. I am not talking about how they are implemented in iPhones, instead that they aren’t introducing any new tech off late.

Previous 'face unlock' methods analyzed a camera image for relative positions and shapes of major features. Remember when Samsung had to add a 'blink check' to their face unlock because it was so easily defeated by a photograph? Face ID analyzes an IR depth map of the face, and at least theoretically should identify the owner even in the dark - vastly different.

Anonymous, 23 Nov 2018I haven't mentioned anything, you're 'arguing' with someone... moreBoth are using same nickname Anonymous, thought both users are same. The first guy mentioned many things apart from FaceID as Apple’s innovations, whereas other than FaceID, everything else is already there in the market. In fact facial recognition is also there before FaceID, S8 released on March 2017. Or things like AMOLED calibration(which has been Samsung feature long before Apple started using AMOLEDs), which that guy termed as Apple’s innovation! And irony is that Samsung is the manufacturer of what he is calling an Apple’s innovation. FaceID, yeah i agree Apple’s implementation is better than what competition has managed to put in their phones, in a way they are quite innovative in making face recognition tech work as it should be, but is it first to bring facial recognition to smartphone world? My general opinion on recent iPhones is that they are just improvising on already available tech rather than bringing groundbreaking, innovative tech to the fore. They are just Iterative. If one presents real genuine innovations, things which Apple introduced itself like it used to do before the competition caught up, to the fore, we can debate. If he names Apple’s versions of an already available tech as innovations and disregards others then there will be no debate.

I just pointed out that if you can justify, for example, dismissing the introduction of 3D facial scanning and real time mapping because another company managed to copy it 6 months later, you're not participating in a debate at all. Might as well argue that Samsung Display doesn't innovate because Sony sold the XEL-1 TV commercially way back in 2008.

Apple has been going downhill since the iPhone 7 for me. I use my headphones nearly every day and that headphone jack is a godsend. I say this to everyone, "I will not give up my headphone jack until the day I can walk into a Walmart and buy a pair of Bluetooth earbuds that are not stupidly expensive and actually sound good!" I also use my SD card to transfer all my pictures and that is much easier.

Anonymous, 20 Nov 2018lol you have no idea what youre talking about. FaceID uses ... more"And iOS is not restricted, its regulated. It doesnt offer the file manager that you want in order to protect copyrights on music, videos, movies, etc. so you are not able to do any kinds of those transfers manually,, you can only do the inside apps where it can be verified that you purchased that multimedia." - What an amateurish statement!! People can purchase DRM free content, I have DRM free games and binaural lossless music tracks that are free of any DRM apps. What you are basically saying is Apple on OS level pushes for even more DRM so you don't get to access the files at all? What about the files I created?? How to access them or move them to another storage should i want to, say I have a word file want to move it to my PC without internet, should i go through iTunes? What if I wanted to share my recording via Bluetooth to a non-iOS user, what's you solution genius? and if Apple is so caring about all the hogwash you gave, then why are there third party file manager apps in App store? ....At least be consistent in your reasoning.
"Android offers the sweet dream of customizability, but its just a dream. Theres no perfect combo for launcher, icon packs and themes. You will always get that odd looking icon, those wrong overlapping colour in a system menu or screen. Its a pipe dream." -- Wow! Now you are saying having choice of customization is bad, seriously how retarded people have to be defending restrictions that absolutely make no sense. I don't care for perfect combo mate just want to change my wall paper and not see all my app icons over it, why is it so difficult to achieve? Launcher does much more than just visual customization, adds useful shortcuts, widgets, gestures, unified search bars that search anything from your contact ,app, songs, videos on your phone to internet searches, one search to rule them all. And the most beautiful part is nothing is forced onto you, you get to choose what you want. I don't know how someone can put a negative spin on freedom.
"But android does not offer the most important thing which is data security and user privacy. It cant because its built as a data collection/monitoring tool." -- Broad and generalized statement, you have much more refined control over what you want to share with which app and Google. You can opt out of personalized ads which means Google won't collect your data to show you customized ads instead show generic ones. There is no way around ads without root but still privacy or data security features are abundant, I myself have done the root and got rid of even the ads on youtube app(actual youtube app and not some third party client for it), which i don't think possible on iOS.
"Besides this, android phones are overpriced, as the OS is provided for free by google. So android phones that come close to iPhone prices = ripoff. " -- Dead wrong, Google only provides license for GMS (Google mobile services) which include Maps, Gmail, Calender, Youtube and so on which are not part of Android open source project. Manufacturers add their own ROMs based on AOSP such as MIUI by Xiaomi or Samsung's TouchWiz or HTC's Sense. These ROMs, though based on AOSP, provide lot more customization and additional settings that generally are not part of vanilla android. So there is a OS cost to manufacturers. Besides hardware feature wise, Samsung has always wiped the floor with iPhones. Expandable Storage, Dual Sim slots, Fingerprint ID, iris unlock, IP 68 Waterproofing, AMOLED displays which were not part of iphones till last year, a headphone jack....... and all other features provided by iPhones. Hardware wise, Android flagships(barring the horrendous pixel phones) are always more complete phones.
"Considering they are invading peoples personal lives, they should be free devices. And even so, people should know to stay away from them and anything that comes from google. But sadly, people have no idea what their data and info is worth and how they make google a powerful and evil organism that works against them." -- You are acting as if iOS users don't use Google apps, The moment you use their apps you are exposing yourself to data collection risks no matter the platform. What do iOS users stream their videos on? or use for searching something on internet ?

Anonymous, 20 Nov 2018Extended display =/= notch
Those are two different things.... moreI think Innovation means doing it first, before all other manufacturers.
If Extended Display and notch are different things, then what is an Extended Display? You mean edge to edge display? Xiaomi and Sharp made them first.
120Hz touch sensing is nothing but a little faster touch response. Nothing groundbreaking.
Regarding AMOLEDs, well the whole world knows who manufactures them in the first place. It isn't Apple for the starters. If it isn't Apple, then how can it be called their innovation?
Wireless tech exists many generations before Apple decided to ditch the jack. And even now wireless audio quality is meh compared to wired(AirPods included).
Regarding Apple security, yes its better than Android, but not foolproof as often its proven with frequent hacks, jailbreaks happening all over the world.
10nm and 7nm processors, again are the work of third party manufacturers, happened to come in iPhones before they mark their presence in the upcoming Android flagships, S10 and co.
3D Touch? It's Apple's take on long press with added functionality.Honestly i am not that regular user of it in my 8 Plus.
Face ID? Its an improvisation and little stable version of whats available in Android realm. And in fact latest OnePlus's face recognition works as fast as Apples.
Haptic engine? Is that you call an innovation? Good Luck.

Anonymous, 19 Nov 2018It does. It sells better than any other manufacturer. Th... moreNo, Samsung and Huawei both sell more phones than Apple these days (note that this also goes against your claim that the best selling Androids replicate Apple, as both companies are some of the holdouts who are differentiating themselves from Apple by not making the same changes Apple does), and while this might not be an issue if iPhones were keeping up with projected demand, they're not: iPhone sales are shrinking and Android phones are taking their market share. Clearly either Apple has strayed from what consumers are asking for, or Android is filling in those needs better now. This isn't a fanboy issue for me, I own an iPhone Xs, but it's denial to pretend that sales coming under targets isn't a bad thing. Just today another story was posted that Xr sales are being FURTHER dialed down due to low sales. Apple needs to take this seriously, and pretending they don't helps no one.

leledumbo, 20 Nov 2018iOS is restricted, period. It's even more than just the und... moreNo need to know which app is consuming how much memory in iOS. There's no need for it because apps are well optimised. You don't even think about those things when using iPhones or iPads. You want to check those because android lags and has terrible memory management and unoptimised apps. And that's not the case on iOS.
iOS is not clunky like android which needs tons of RAM to barely work.
You might see regulations as restrictions, but ultimately they are regulations. And don't worry, they're coming to android too. Artists and movie businesses, and app developers need to be protected from theft and people should pay for everything that they listen to, watch, or use. It's mindblowing how people still choose to steal from those, by illegally downloading content from pirate sources and from torrents. And how people still use cracked software. This is completely wrong.
It's one thing to have low standards for eye candy and UI design, but that doesn't make bad design acceptable. If you understand UI, UX and graphic design, your standards go way up. Those who have high standards can't cope with android's messy UI and all the inconsistencies generated by 3rd party launchers in combination with icons, icon shapes, masks, colours, and other themes. There is always at least one thing that doesn't look right for those with high visual and usability standards. You may like your Opel or Hyunday, but those are nowhere near having great designs.

Anonymous, 20 Nov 2018Extended display =/= notch
Those are two different things.... more
"Only iPhones have 120Hz touch sensing." -- and a 60 Hz panel with it.....
"Yes, colour calibration and colour accurate displays with a wide colour gamut, are innovations. Apple introduced these, and Apple managed to calibrate amoled displays to be on par and even surpass LCD colours. " --- You can keep calling it innovation all day but at the end it's still color calibration. samsung goes little more on saturated side and apple doesn't, it's a choice not innovation but basic hardware manufacturer is samsung itself.
The removal of the 3.5mm jack is logical step towards all-wireless tech. Stop clinging on to the past. And Apple did it right, as they offerred the AirPods when they removed the jack. --- Two ways you can see it. I see it is the very reason behind headphone jack removal to push people to dump 160 bucks for their shiny Earpods not to forget a multibillion dollar acquisition of Beats who also coincidentally sell Bluetooth headphones. I have used the Airpods and in terms of quality they still don't hold the candle to some of the much cheaper wired headphones DUNU Titan 1 for example, half the price and whole lot better sound. again not an innovation, not a good thing. Unless there's something better I'd rather cling on to what currently works fine, it's not as if i don't have enough thing to charge every single day to add headphones to that list that too at twice or thrice more price to get half decent audio output.
"Apple security is not keeping up with the times, it's keeping ahead of the times, and yes, that is continous effort. It's continuous innovation to be ahead of times at all times." -- so you are not going to comment on multi account support.
"Did you mention the 10nm and 7nm CPUs in your post? Those are two years ahead of anything in the android world. " -- No I didn't and overwhelming majority that buys iPhones don't care what is the die size or what's the name of the CPU inside their phones.... SD 845 is a 10nm processor by the way. and there are multiple competitors to Snapdragon too. Kirin, Mediatek, Samsung's in house Exynos so no we won't be devoid of competition or innovation without apple.
"3D touch? Can't live without it once you start using it. Nothing in the android world has that." -- Same functionality is achieved with a long press on any touch screen phone on androids not exactly innovation for the purpose that tech existed. Haptic is replacing that on XR so not even apple seems to be interested in keeping it going.
"FaceID that's actually working and is more secure than fingerprint sensors? Nothing in the android world has that." --- You know what's equally secure as that of Face ID(if we are to believe apple's claim of 1 : 1000000) ?? a six digit pin, same odds as that of face ID and unlike Face ID, PIN cannot be fooled by identical twins. Not to forget that it's extremely inconvenient to unlock phones when they are sitting on the desk, a typical scenario for people like me. But thanks to most Chinese manufacturer's obsession with Apple, an unncessary feature that actually spoils the looks of the phone has made way into android world.
Haptic engine? That's so awesome to use and feels "right". Unlike the wobbly vibration motors inside android devices. --- "It was 2013 when they got that patented and OP asked what was their innovation in last 2-3 years, but even if we assume Haptic is a great innovation that actually adds some value by letting me do something faster or more convenient way which it does not, is this all what apple has innovated then? coz every damn phone that comes out iteratively is better than previous one whether it's iphone or any android flagship, nobody releases iteratively slower phones"
And did you must have missed several other innovations such as Throttlegate, Bendgate, "You are not holding it right"gate and so on.... At least i know my manufacturer is not deliberately slowing down my phone with software update without my consent or knowledge, in fact obfuscating that till the time they got caught with pants down by some benchmark.

I find Android more restrictive than iOS because Google is forcing its apps on the user whether one likes them or not. On the iPhone I can decide which Google app to use or I can even decide to use none of them. Another restriction is that Android phones don’t get as many updates as the iPhone does. After a couple of years you’re restricted to an old OS. Another restriction is that Android is getting the latest apps a lot later than iOS. If someone has to wait for months to get an app that’s a restriction, isn’t it? Another restriction is that Android doesn’t offer the same quality of apps like the iOS. App producers find it easier to develop an app for iOS and given the fact that iPhones as old as five years run the same OS, it’s in their intesterst to give priority to IOS than Android. That means better quality of apps and better optimized. Because iOS is not fragmented it’s possible to get updates with new features at a faster rate. Having an android phone stuck in an older version of the OS means that you get stuck in older versions of apps that lack all the latest features. And that’s a restriction as well.
