Weekly poll: are screen holes better than teardrop notches?

25 November 2018
The selfie camera has been causing smartphone designers headaches as it obstructs their quest of slimming bezels down to nothing.

But why do designers are searching for bezel less mobile ? A small bezel at top & bottom looks great. In my opinion S9 is the best mobile in all aspects including Screen to Body ratio.

I prefer bezel. I don't like to waste my money on display hole

Hardly a fair question when for some unknown reason the punchout hole method has no border around it at all yet the teardrop method shown has maybe up to 2mm border around it despite housing the exact same camera. I'd pick the teardrop version but with the same small border as the hold version.

You can hide sensors even if in all corners with trendy software bezel in hexagram fashion. Corners are round anyway... and you get full width without sw bezels. Maybe even change color with mood. Wish it was working also on sides of round screens with touch disabling.

Seriously? it would be better if under the screen just like a fingerprint under the screen.. a camera lens that can se thru an lcd would be way way better than having a hole..

How about notification LEDs, proximity sensors and others like face ID?

As a Note 9 user,I think the overall design for Note 9 is pretty descent. For sure it has top and bottom bezels but it is symmetrical. The first way to add screen to body ratio is leaving top bezel and put all the sensors and speaker there.
The following step is totally bezel-less with under-display selfie camera and sensors.
Teardrop notch is acceptable in looking but the display would still lose a small display area.

Sliders = smaller battery and heavier
hole in the screen = dead pixel
                    iphone notch = ugly

screen holes take the least amount of space, so they are the best.

                        pretty easy maths tbh

Would prefer symmetrical bezels top and bottom for easier grip in landscape and keeping screen centered.

Selfie camera can go to the hell because i don't need it! I prefer a Periscope or Honor 7i!

If not possible to hide high quality cameras under display, and as today many tasks need selfie cameras like, video conference, facial interaction with handsets, etc. It is better to have a hole in top left or right corner for front facing camera which most of the time is self hiding in black bars or dark color.
Notch is not my choice unless I need a system like Kinect with its potential capabilities, unlocked in order to have access all its ability and optimize it for myself. Notches for unlocking phone, selfie, animoji, 3D avatars are not my priority to hold notched phones.

Any notch is not welcomed by my criteria.

Top/Bottom bezel is against 16:9 or 21:9 Screen Ratio. Bezel-less displays can be small in 16:9 or be wide to 21:9 (Not Stretch/Skew movies).

Slider is good too, as users are four group:
1- Careful-Light: A handset lasts 8 years in their hands with few scratches.
2- Careful-Heavy: A handset lasts 4 years in their hand with dent and scratches all over their still functioning phone.
3- Careless-Light: A handset lasts 2 years in their hands before death.
4- Careless-Heavy: A handset lasts 8 Month in their hands before death.
Sliders either manual or auto can last as long as the user care.

In my opinion a hole in corner is better than notch or other available remedy

r33fd, 25 Nov 2018Am I the only one who actually prefers some bezel area? ... moreyou not the only one, i also prefer minimal bezel like sony latest flagship (that can housing front camera, sensor, and dual front facing speaker) than notch or some dead pixel-like in my screen

Well done, this is much better question than "notch in general, yes it no?" sort of question we've seen in other tech sites.
Of course shape and size matters to human eyes : OP6T, Essential = kinda cute. Pixel 3xl and iPhone = fugly.

I don't even wanna selfie camera.

Am I the only one who actually prefers some bezel area?

That leaves enough room for everything and also helps with gripping the phone while gaming/watching things.

It is significant that for once Apple stumbled and came up with a solution that was briefly copied and is already dying. Share price is down 20% in a month.
