THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. THIS IS SPYING!

and even the company basically admitted they DO gather that data, realtime or not

how dare they do something like that?
I think every phone needs very close inspection regarding what's running in there and this crap needs to be eliminated from all phones that do this.

AnonD-669, 30 Nov 2011Just get a dumb phone...there's no such thing as "dumb phone". Any piece of hardware smart enough to run GSM/GPRS communication protocls (read as "all mobile phones") is capable of capturing and transmitting additional data. Not to mention remote microphone and camera activation. Users could only hope manufacturers are not so evil to put malicios software on their products.

Do you know what's running on your phone?

It's scary that any company can retrieve everyones data. The question is WHY do they do it and what do they want to use the data for. If it's for market research then they need to pay the people for their information. It's illegal to take people's data without them knowing it!!

All smart phones track your position using location enabled software. All of them. Turn it off as it serves no useful purpose to the actual phone user. In addition it will stop much of the battery drain.

Incorrect GSMarena, it can appear on all android phones, it was only first discovered on a HTC.

                              For all the uninformed ones:

This is not a part of Android, Google has nothing to do with it. Google doesn't steal your data, and doesn't sell it for money.

Since Google's flagship devices (Nexus One, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus) are running pure android, they don't have it.

This is manufacturers/carriers crap. I believe, if it's done without any user agreement, people will take legal actions. And yeah, it must be, because out of all millions people who bought phones from HTC, at least 10 would carefully analyze the contract.
