Shanti Dope, 05 Dec 2018Just like batteries on smartphones
"Wow, my phone can fi... more^ This.
These OEMs need to try to leapfrog in battery life. But they know degraded, sealed batteries is part of their planned obsolescence, so they don't do it. Just like they removed headphone jack so we can buy wireless headphones/earbuds that we will also dispose every few years. And how about that Bluetooth radiation?
I do think some new revolution is coming next year. Foldable displays, 3+ rear cameras, sliders, etc. I found 2017 & 2018 for tech rather disappointing. Hopefully, 2019 doesn't offer a false promise like the last two years did when they removed headphone jack, add notches, decreased in battery life, and raised prices.
I haven't found one phone as good all-around as the 2016 LG G5 and V20. Yeah, their battery life kinda sucks and that image retention. Aware of the G5's GPS issues although never experienced it on mine. But neither have the awful glass backs. They have removable batteries (last flagships of their kind), expandable storage, headphone jack, and IR blaster.
We're almost in 2019 and it seems the last good year in tech for me was in 2016. Yeah, the iPhone 7 removed headphone jack but it wasn't that common until the following year. I hate the sound quality from the dongle. That's why not many phones interests me anymore. I love my Essential Phone but even I know it lacks a headphone jack and all the other features my LGs have.
IR blaster is such an underrated feature. I use it every single day. I wish OEMs brought it back but the new features in flagships right now is by removing old features. I hate Apple. Everyone ends up copying them. They may not be the first but they're the most influential which can be a bad thing. Rotten Apple.

Anonymous, 05 Dec 2018So basically, they want a to sell two chips. The SD855 and ... moreNo...
Many countries will not have 5G before 2025. What Qualcomm is doing is to give the OEMs the choice to choose the markets they want to sell 5G enabled devices.
People from 3rd world nations buy much more mid/low ends, those phones wont be 5G any soon. And these countries will take years to provide 5G, there is no need to sell phones with 5G modem there .

Poor Apple
New iPhone will still only offer SDR videos and they will say it is professional quality.
Should focus on battery life and processing power, not benchmark

Dolanescu, 05 Dec 2018RIP Kirin 980... one month to be equal with SD is enough :DActually the Kirin 980 got introduced in the end of Aug
31.08.2018 - > 04.12.2018
This is just over 3 months and Mate 20 got introduced beginning of October so let's see
when the first implementation will go into the market.
This is not one month as you say, but 3 months, quite big difference isn't it ?
I see no reason for RIP since the performance boost is small but this is up to the user to decide.

So basically, they want a to sell two chips. The SD855 and the x50. So if you want 5g, u have to pay extra. Not that I would care since 5g is barely starting in the US anyways. We probably wont see any real worth to it until several years.

"Wow, my phone can fi... moreNah. Apple just happened to be hip. Branding plus Jobs marketing catapulted it in the US and the rest of the countries that look up to the US.
Paying for apps with carrier billing/prepaid credits and without looking for different websites was already available even on java phones.

if you read the article correctly its improving the current 4k standard on devicves as it can do depth mapping as 60fps + in HDR for 4K(which no other SOC can do at this time)
and do this while using 25% of the power from 845 chip.
