Sony Xperia XZ4 Compact CAD-based renders leak, video too

07 December 2018
After a few XZ4 leaks, it's time to see its smaller sibling for the first time.

Sort by:

Speaker placement like Z5 Compact
Body design like X Compact or XZ1 Compact
And Sony please make the upper/bottom bezel symmetrical like that on XZ4 Compact.

Considering the huge displays high-end smartphones have today (the minimum being 5.7" and going almost to 7") this truly is a high-end compact smartphone.
If Sony is bringing back the 3.5mm jack I'm switching my S8+ in a heartbeat and going to get the XZ4.

I cannot belive this. What 13.9mm height?
        ." The XZ4 Compact will have a 5-inch display and its dimensions are 139.9 x 66.5 x 9.3 mm."
That's not a compact phone at all, is just a "normal " standard phone. Sony just make a compact phone like xz1 compact but with round corners . What a heck.

Wow this one really gets my attention, compact, flagship perfomance, retro blocky, side fps, 3.5mm jack which I highly hope could handle higher independece headphones like AudioTechnica M20x.. If it got decent amp there, Iam in with this.. :o

Just having a beer, 07 Dec 2018Seeing people comment on the thickness makes me smile a lot... moreYep this is the best compact phone in the market. The only bad thing is that it is bigger than XZ1 compact... how a ”compact” phone can be even bigger? But all in all at this moment there is no phone that is competing in compact highend phone gategory all other Are far too big. They Are not even close to be compact...
So good to see the Sony come back, Hopefully some other company would eventually make some really small flagship phones. Samsun does not make those, Xiaomi does not make those anymore, goodgle does not make those, Nokia aka HMD does not make those. There just is no competition in compact flagship gategory.

No wonder Sony has trouble renewing its smartphone designs... When they released XZ2 Compact, people cried about lack of 3.5mm jack, backside fingerprint sensor, 12.1mm thickness and the overall design (which is many bought the older the XZ1C instead). According to this preliminary render, Sony has listened and fixed all the things you hated about the XZ2C as XZ4C has 3.5mm jack, has the side/power button fingerprint sensor, is almost 3mm thinner and returns to the familiar 'blocky' design. And what do people do... Hate it. I for one am buying this to replace my Sony X Compact. Do I wish Sony would lose the bezels and be like every other phone out there? Yes. Would I trade bezeless design for the bigger overall size of every other phone? Not in a million years. Sure, the length of XZ4C is not necessarily that of a pocket-friendly compact phone, but this is still easily the smallest Android with flagship-like specs out there.

On these SONY threads there's a lot of emotion and not enough facts.
                    Here's some actual numbers:

                    2013 Z1c: 127.0 x 64.9 x 9.5 mm (78.30 cm3), 2300 mAh, ~61.8% StB, 4.3" 16:9
                    2014 Z3c: 127.3 x 64.9 x 8.6 mm (71.05 cm3), 2600 mAh, ~70.6% StB, 4.6" 16:9
                    2015 Z5c: 127.0 x 65.0 x 8.9 mm (73.47 cm3), 2700 mAh, ~70.7% StB, 4.6" 16:9
                    2016 XPc: 129.0 x 65.0 x 9.5 mm (79.66 cm3), 2700 mAh, ~69.6% StB, 4.6" 16:9
                    2017XZ1c: 129.0 x 64.0 x 9.3 mm (76.78 cm3), 2700 mAh, ~70.7% StB, 4.6" 16:9
                    2018XZ2c: 135.0 x 65.0 x 12.1 mm (106.18 cm3), 2870 mAh, ~65.3% StB, 4.56" 16:9*
                    2019XZ4c: 139.9 x 66.5 x 9.3 mm (85.96 cm3), unknown mAh, ~65.8% StB, 4.71" 16:9**

Based on these figures, the 2015 Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is the best design overall. It has almost the smallest volume, whilst having almost the largest battery, and the Screen to Body Ratio is the highest on the list. On top of this, it achieves it with the handicap of the large QSD 810 chipset inside, a headphone jack, and it has front-firing stereo loudspeakers. The drawbacks is that it has partial water-resistance, no fingerprint reader, and a microUSB port, which actually uses less internal space than a USB-C port.

So stepping that up, the next best option is actually the 2017 Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact. Yes, its almost perfect in terms of a portable phone, and the only improvements I would make would be to move the logo and fingerprint scanner to the rear, then move the cameras and buttons around to make it a full-symmetrical phone. Maybe even throw in some lanyard holes, dual vibration motors for better game experience, and dual-front cameras and dual-rear cameras to record 3D content and AR/VR, as well as 360' videos. And if technology permitting: increase the battery density, increase the Screen to Body Ratio, and decrease the device volume.

                    Footnotes:
                    *(18:9) < 5.01", < 2160 x 1080 pixels, fullview < 73.8% StB
                    **(21:9) < 5.87", < 2520 x 1080 pixels, fullview < 86.4% StB

Wauuvv nice BIG bezel, then i really prefer a waterdrop notch instead of this 60% bezel look a like.
Really don't understand this... Cmon Sony :-O

It seems that Sony has FINALLY LEFT the (Cr)Apple's so-called "COURAGE" cult. Welcome to the REALITY. Hope more manufacturers do the same (Samsung I am watching you.). If I am not wrong, HTC MAYBE has left the cult too by bringing back the 3.5mm jack on U12 Life unlike previous model U11 Life. Hope to see the 3.5mm jack back on HTC's next flagship.

Well done Sony on putting the fingerprint scanner back where it belongs on the side. Seems the overal dimensions are too chunky though to be a proper compact. The XZ1C was only 64mm wide, this one is much wider and looks bulkier too.

Wiz, 07 Dec 2018Get XZ1 Compact. Although XZ1C is quite a bargain nowadays, it will reach its EoL faster than I want my "NEW" phone to do, as it is over 1 year old already. Besides, despite the camera performance being a good jump from Z5C to XZ1C, the jump from XZ1C to XZ2C was quite noticable as well, and the minimum performance I expect from my new phone is of XZ2C's. If this new phone is a true flagship Compact, it'll be a buy for me.

So far, Sony is the only company targeting users who fancy compact phones i.e 5 inch and smaller screens.
Unfortunately there is no competition since all other brands are competing in larger much more powerful phones.
Regardless I applaud SONY for continuing the compact one handed use phones.
I hope others take their example and consider manufacturing smaller phones.

Side mounted fingerprint again? more bezel than xz2 compact? Flat back and thickness of ~8mm?! Seems not legit to me.
