I have four Xiaomis. Redmi 4 received MIUI 10, Redmi Note 4 is on Android 6 and MIUI 9. I never received the update to Android 7 on it nor the MIUI upgrade. The A1 receives updates rwgularly and is on android 8. The Mi A2 did not receive the Android 9 even though it was rolled out two months ago. I am done with these phones. I am moving to competition on my next phone. May be Huawei.

If you don't want to wait then you need find a way around it. You're buying a product without doing proper research then blame manufacturers for own shortcomings.
Pixel & iPhone seem to be the solution for you - they provide you better update paths.

abigfanoftechs, 09 Dec 2018Have you tried VPNing into countries which offered the update? No. But I have considered buying a phone with proper support (ie. no jumping through hoops to get basic advertised features, such as updates on Android One).

RaZa, 09 Dec 2018I'm still waiting for the 9.0 Pie update for my A2 :/Same here. Hopefully they release it soon everywhere.
I'm kind of hoping they don't... this way people will be encouraged to develop the 3rd-party ROMs (such as LineageOS). An unofficial LOS version has finally arrived, but anyone who knows LOS is already painfully aware that good support only happens when that version becomes officially supported (due to the compliance with the charter).

Timely OS updates is a crock.
Apart from Apple, Google, and Essential phone updates are a disgrace.

Nope, no update here, anyway I'll hold on to my horses & see any issues report by other user before updating, learn my hard lesson during Oreo 8.0 update on 31st December 2017.
Anyway Beta test just out less than a week, I doubted this information is accurate, probably just a Beta update.

Been using Xiaomi's own full-screen gestures for over a month now and have been getting used to it already. Still prefer the speed and convenience of navigation keys, but I was forced to use it in order to save some usable surface area since Xiaomi took away the option to hide navigation keys on MIUI 9 onwards.
So far, I don't think it's bad, except I now can no longer use the swipe gesture to activate one-handed mode and Press&Hold Menu key to activate split screen mode.
