it's super cool but I'm sure it gets toasty! and it'll probably last around 1 year before the battery goes bad. if it had a removable battery I'd be all over it

Someone, 14 Dec 2018Battery fast degradation due to high voltage and current ov... moreNice uneducated comment. Heat damages batteries not the current or voltage

I would compromise REMOVABLE batteries, if the alternative was to have a larger battery that could fast-charge (eg SuperVOOC). Wireless Charging isn't great, but it is a nice bonus to have in the small chance you get to use it at a cafe or something.

Add proper IP68 waterproofing to that list, and I'll gladly make the change.
Heck, I would even put up with a Glass-Back phone (and use a Kickstand Case) if it meant I maintain a decent level of durability eg Samsung S8 Active, just to stay up-to-date in the software department and processor department.

And I would even put up with dual-notches and unnatural aspect ratios (17:9), if it meant keeping front-firing stereo loudspeakers and a symmetrical design. But I won't yield the headphone jack, that needs to stay.

EskeRahn, 14 Dec 2018Ah well. A fast charger can still be really handy! It is n... moreFast Charge is indeed brilliant and an innovation, the people here talking against it are people who own phones that don’t have it or have slow fast Charging. If Apple had done it, these same people would be praising it.

Fact of the matter is that nobody here has even come with full proof that ultra fast Charge degrades the battery faster, they have all come to talk it down from their bias.

I think fast charging is a bit overrated. If the battery of a phone is so small that it has to be charged multiple times a day, then its a good addition, but with most modern smartphones, they last all day, so people charge them over night, and there the time to charge doesn't really matter. In that concern, I could even live with my Xperia M4 Aqua which needed 4 hours to get from 0-100. Of course the 1 and 1/2 hours of my iPhone 7 are more comfortable, but that's because the battery life of both of those phones is not that great to begin with.

Actually I have been using One+ for over a year & still dont find any deterioration in battery performance.Neither have any of my relatives & friends who have used One+.It is equally important to have good quality brand .Almost all major brands from Apple to Samsung though charge painfully slow, batteries deteriorate within a year & after. Why?

Lol. All that mclaern hype and price for nothing. You can basically get that fast charging with a nokia 1100 xD.
Marketting gimicks..useless phones and every manufacturer is full of s***

Its the most irritating thing! China the communist country has the most competitiveness. What a shame

Fast charging does not need to heat the battery, if done under the correct circumstances, but it still hits the battery - but sometimes that is an acceptable 'price', just don't do it on a daily basis.

But indeed non removable batteries is a horrible trend. Part of the planned obsolescence by aPple and learned by other crooks.

What matters is how hot the device (and especially the battery) is during charging.
And if you got a device that gets hotter during slow-charge than fast-charge, then the engineers have really done a poor job, or some regulation circuitry is not working.

naap51d, 14 Dec 2018Nice way to burn out your battery faster. FAST charging, p... moreYou do realise that some of the competitively slower chargers do run hotter than those that charge faster? The USB pd in pixel runs hotter but slower than the dash charge. So it's not that the all the fast chargers are killing your battery.

Or are you a butthurt Apple user??

Nice way to burn out your battery faster. FAST charging, pushes the temperatures of the battery higher, with that much current, which has an impact on the performance of the battery over time, causing it to not "fully charge" and thus the battery won't last the day. Requiring your to replace the phone because of these now water tight, glued together things with glass on the front & back makes it near impossible to disassemble to replace the battery.

Anonymous, 14 Dec 2018Pay $70 more to kill your batteries faster! Brilliant!Ah well. A fast charger can still be really handy!
It is not that single fast charges immediately kill the battery, it generally just shortens the battery life a little extra each time. So use when needed, avoid using for daily charging.

Optimally the fast charger (or device) should have some 'boost' switch, only activating the fast when needed. Like some dish washer, with a very slow economy mode, and a fast mode for when needed.

Anonymous, 14 Dec 2018Will this apply for li-po batteries also?Sorry, overlooked this one. AFAIK yes, it is the same issues.

Anonymous, 14 Dec 2018biggest battery life killer is letting it go to 0% and turn... moreIt is actually a bit more complex.

It is a problem to keep a battery charged too...

On modern laptops you often got a setting to avoid keeping the battery higher than e.g. 80%. But unfortunately we don't have that option on std phone/phablets.

But the other end is ALSO problematic, and as you say total discharges should be avoided too... But you need to do occasional full charges and discharges, for the device to calibrate, otherwise the percentages displayed will drift away (the percentages are estimates like flight ETA, not absolute measurements)

And the DoD (Depth of Discharge) ALSO matters... it is all really complex actually,
Many years ago I found a deper article on all this, and tried to do an excerpt here
                                    https://eskerahn.dk/wordpress/?p=250

Roblox, 14 Dec 2018As per the link you provided, the following conditions must... moreAnd similar you did not read (or understand?) it all.... e.g. look at the consequences for the overall battery life... A larger excerpt of the text does not help if you do not get the whole picture...

In the ideal world the central sentence is
"...and there is no problem with fast charging an empty Li-ion up to about 50% ..."
BUT read all the 'small print' of what goes wrong when going above about 50%, or if the temperature is not room temperature. (of which you quoted some)

At the (very) least read the summary

                                      "Summary
All batteries perform best at room temperature and with a moderate charge and discharge. Such a sheltered life style does not always reflect real world situations where a compact pack must be charged quickly and deliver high currents."

Another way to say that we all in daily life want charging faster than what is best for the battery. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, as long as we are aware of the consequences...
                                      So to summarize it:
***Avoid fast charge when possible, and use it when needed***

In daily use it is much better for the battery to charge with low current while we sleep, and only use the fast charge, if in urgent need during the day. And if so preferably stop at roughly 50%

biggest battery life killer is letting it go to 0% and turn off (even though most phones 0%/power off is probably still around 15% actual charge left in battery).

Batteries last much longer if you keep them around 80% as it puts less stress on them.
(thats why i like my moto z2 force, with turbo power battery mod, as there is a setting to use the mod to keep your battery at 80%).
