It's true when they say statistics are like skirts. They hide as much as they reveal. The obvious way to look at this is that with 21%, the majority of people want a 6 inch phone. But 21% is not much of a lead when second and third place is 19% (5.8in) and 14% (5in).
Besides, if you see the percentages for under 6 inches, you could say 55% of people would prefer a phone under 6 inches. And going by the top 3 of that statistic -- 5.8, 5 and 5.6 in that order -- it seems the average majority would prefer a phone of 5.46 inches.
Say you want to alter your findings, and you take the top three sizes in this survey -- 6, 5.8 and 5 in that order -- it still comes to 5.6 inches on an average. That would mean most people want a phone between 5.4 to 5.6 inches.
Which is a fairly compact, one-hand, pocketable size in the 18:9 screen ratio compared to the monstrosities being concocted.

Well, a 5.2" screen including notches on both sides is basically a 6" screen without notches or with just camera notches on top, nothing new really. The size is basically the same if you think of it that way.

It's disapointing that the poll did not include smaller than 5" screen options. I love my compact iPhone SE with its 4" screen and would only upgrade to a slightly larger screen if it's in a body the size of an SE.

6" is honestly too big, I enjoy being able to use my phone with one hand. But if times change when I need to upgrade and the typical phone screens will be like 6.5" long, I'll have no choice but to buy in

And you right , this article should focus and all results and only talks about 6" and 5.8 " screens, who wrote this btw? The author should focus on the other result 5" and what companies should look for it too and stop making so many phablets theat are all equal , there a big group for more compact size (term nowadays) of 5" screen.

iPhone 6 could easily fit 5.5 inches. Galaxy a3 could easily fit 5.2 inches. I want a phone I can carry in my pocket, especially when I wear a suit. So somewhere between 5.2 and 5.5 is the sweet spot when you have 90% screen to body ratio.

That is still no reason not to make smaller devices. There are people out there waiting for them, they have the money ready, but it seems nobody actually wants their money. It's a wasted opportunity, really.

Why did phone screens need to get taller? (angrily looking at you Samsung and Xiaomi...)
We should have chopped off the top and bottom bezels, instead of expanding screens to fit, which makes swiping from the top or bottom difficult with one hand. And creates the shampoo bottle effect when reading.

If we maintain DPI, the wide screen actually shows LESS content (web pages / documents).
this results in more scrolling.
Size needs to increase proportionally.
It's normal that people feel fine to choose bigger screens nowdays, because non-existent borders mean devices become smaller. 5.8 galaxy note 4 fits 6.4 screen (without borders).

Maybe you should see it that way. But apparently all the manufacturers are doing different and pushing the screen size. I mean this in fact is fine. But the wider body is rather that what is disturbing.

BGChicago, 13 Jan 201925% voted 5.0" and there is only one phone that fits this c... moreI'm pretty sure many of the 25% who voted 5.0" meant the 16:9 aspect ratio (e.g. Galaxy J3 2017), not 18:9 (XZ2 Compact). A 5.5" 18:9 screen is the same width as a 5" 16:9 screen as said in my previous comment. Diagonally measured screen size is now redundant. Screen length and width determines the actual screen size.
