Opinion: Bezel-less is not the way forward

20 January 2019
How do you imagine the phones in three years? Foldable? Bezel-less? With invisible cameras? Powered by new long-lasting batteries? Maybe. But bezel-less - that can't be the way forward.

I agree with the article, but from my experience (and most people i know) a phone case for the current generations of about 90% glass phones is a must. The case also "creates" a bezel for better grip. In the past with big bezel phones the case used to be an ugly accessory than made the phone even more bulky. But now with all screen phone it feels like part of the device and when taking it off it feels like taking out the screen. Manufactures also think you should have one because they make/sell them.

The OP is conflating bezel-less with curve screen & large unmanageable screen with usability. He argues against bezel-less because his inability to adapt large/curve screen.
    His struggle isn't against bezel-less.

Phones are getting bigger for no real reason. I agree in part that the whole approach has to do with aesthetics rather then practicality. People might have a second thought on this trend of increasing the size, only after dropping those precious jewels of gadgets. Adding a case that can really protect the device makes it totally unusable with one hand. As the iDevices and Samsung are more and more expensive, size will become relevant again. So you have no choose this days.

Anonymous, 21 Jan 2019This article isn't wrong, but I would counter your points b... moreI wholeheartedly agree. Bezeless is ok if the phone is small enough and has a good grip on the edge AND back sides. Having all glasses and not-so-good-grip side frame, on a big device, make it harder to do something using one hand.

Ok, I thought I am the only one hating this bezel-less race. Good to know there is someone else...

The only problem with holding is bad algorithm, not enough sensors or possibly even turned on touch under screen. Who could complain about bigger screen.

you should get a Sony then

CJha, 21 Jan 2019This is absolutely right. Also, the so-called "edge screen"... moreI'm using the Note 8 from more than a year and I never had phantom touches. Not once. I don't know how you're holding it but if I don't have this issue, and almost no one talks about them, then I'm sure the majority is fine with curved edges.

It seems like you're complaining about rounded screens, not bezelless ones.

Totally agree... i dont understand this trend to go bezel less. And yeah i salute Sony for sticking to having bezels. Japs are more Utlitarian. They wont compromise usefulness just to follow a trend or for the sake of beauty. That plus they Quality stuff. Though they pricey hehe...

This is absolutely right. Also, the so-called "edge screen" by Samsung and other manufacturers need to go away. I own a Samsung Galaxy S8+ and edge screen is very annoying. Let's keep the phones easy and comfortable for everyone!

LG Superfan, 21 Jan 2019Not a bling bling item to me either but wont it be boring i... moreIs "boring" such a bad thing here? I would say that variety function-wise would be much more interesting to suit the variety of users and usage patterns out there.

Even just looking at slabs, some would prefer a large device for two handed operation only, some a small for comfortable one handed usage only, some an intermediate size, that by stretching can be used by one hand. And some prefer a thin and light device easy to slip into a dinner jacket or bag, others one with big battery, and others with a mechanically enforced more sturdy device. And some a clamshell or QWERTY-slider... Add to that variety in cameras, chipsets and other specs to make the devices more or less budget friendly... All depending on the users preferences. There is room for a LOT of variety - looking boring or not.

Sony's sales are dropping very fast and numbers are in deep red. To me it's a no go...But it was a fan of their devices couple years back.

Bezels with Front Firing Stereo Speakers. And have enough space for your hand when gaming on your phone.

bezel less is the future. in future you’ll be holding a phone just made out of display and touch screen! companies have to make it easier to use, and we also have to change how we use it. its not like we’re stuck to old tech were some parts are wasted. we dont need unused spaces in life! when there are changes, we have to adapt. now foldable will change everything.

So true in many ways! I recently purchased the Galaxy A6+ and have to say that the thicker bezels compared to the higher end models make it easier to use. Besides that watching videos and looking at photos is also more comfortable without a curved screen. What I have to complain about is the stupid virtual button control. I hide them since they are annoying but sliding them in is tricky and I often provoke accidental actions in the app which is open. I think Apple did a much smarter job on iPhone X but I have no real life experience on it.

I entirely agree with this. Bezels should not be any thinner than the Galaxy S9 or the ASUS ROG Phone.

                                    That is a stupid opinion.

Well cut your hands off & you won't have problems with baze-less phone's anymore. You can use the phone without side bazel's as long it's not a big one but that's about it. While top can be eliminated we will always need a little bit of chin as long as we got fingers. I am for returning to 16:9 display also simply as they are fitted better for reading, watching videos and cetera. The additional 20+% screen area on non standard 18/19:9 display just sucks more juice & it's as useful as last winter snow in Alabama.
