Opinion: Bezel-less is not the way forward

20 January 2019
How do you imagine the phones in three years? Foldable? Bezel-less? With invisible cameras? Powered by new long-lasting batteries? Maybe. But bezel-less - that can't be the way forward.

This article isn't wrong, but I would counter your points by saying phones are becoming difficult to use not because of shrinking bezels, but because they're getting too big and too thin. If a phone were small and designed to fit in a single hand like it used to be and more substantial to hold (thicker) so that you had a better grip, thin bezels would not be an issue because you could easily manipulate and navigate without having to play "hand gymnastics". Unfortunately, this is common sense, which the market today lacks.

Totally valid. I infact went for a normal S7 rather than S7 edge. Phones should have some bezel and the bottom area. They are meant for convenience and not trouble. Also the phones should be max 5 inches. 18:9 aspect ration is also worst.

You almost got it on point but truth is the industry is scamming us with this feature!
This feature is not truly valuable as they simply stretched the 16:9 smartphones to a taller aspect ratio, so phones got bigger slapped on top with a longer/taller display!
The future I was expecting back then are disappearing bezels but still retaining that 16:9 display, making phones smaller without sacrificing display area.
The only redeeming value for taller/longer displays is for watching wide movies at 21:9 which we don't do much often than other things.

I think the space gray iPhone 5S/SE is the best iPhone design ever. I know it is not popular, but I also love my silver LG G5 design. I loved the HTC One M7 and Nexus One designs. All those devices have bezels.

I really do not understand bezel Nazis. How useful is it really with taller displays? I'm typing from my V20 right now and really have no issues if it has bezels or not. Such a cosmetic gimmick like curved displays are.

I'm looking at my PS3 phat right now and love looking at it when it is vertical. It might look like a George Foreman grill horizontally but it looks really stylish standing up. Not bad for a console that was released in 2006.

Some designs can be timeless. I find the iPhone 5/5S/SE design timeless. I don't think the current bezel-less phones have that. They all start to look the same.

On surplus, so are apple, samsung, etc tasting serious drops in sales.
People need new phones, dont like those phones unpractical designs actually, but have no choice, so they go for cheaper options at least.
In the end, no, its not what most people want, its what most people have to live with unfortunately.
Mobile market couldnt be as boring as it is now, all phones look exactly the same.

I think the bezel-less trend is just another excuse to transition to another form factor - presumably with foldable tech.

Having had the iPhone X for a while now, I can say that the reduced bezels didn't contribute much to make it substantially better than the iPhone 8. It's more about the OLED screen and in a way FaceID.... which is getting old fast cause TouchID is way more functional.

Looking forward to see what Sony can come up with the XZ4.

I don't agree vith this article. The principal use of phones is scrolling for media content like on social networks. Not for movies. Presently have an oppo find x and just wish it would be more bezeless.

The problem you're facing is due to oversized screens, not thin bezels. You'd face the same problem on a 5.7" phone with iPhone 6's bezels. The insane demand for tablets instead of phones (we're way past the "phablet" territory. That was the 5.5" screens. We're on full fledged tablets now) is what's causing such issues. And it makes sense: tablets should be used with 2 hands. Phones are supposed to be compact so that they're usable with one hand. But yeah, people aren't happy with their PC screens so they use their phones instead nowadays...

Basically it's a long flight to advertise the new Sony upcoming smartphone. I get it!

Smartphone's display shouldn't over 6 inch because it need more space for battery plus it gain weight and last you can't have better grip to the phone and have to often pass over hand by hand to release stresses. You more estate of viewing are but you have to compromise to the weight and less grip and not handy. Conclusion you get more for less.

Bezel-less is beautiful but not durable.
In my opinion, we should go back to our early days.

I want the top and the bottom to be also curved. Not just the sides. It would look properly beautiful.
