Opinion: Bezel-less is not the way forward

20 January 2019
How do you imagine the phones in three years? Foldable? Bezel-less? With invisible cameras? Powered by new long-lasting batteries? Maybe. But bezel-less - that can't be the way forward.

Agree with this whole article. I wish Samsung would stop curving their displays

I think the author is seeing the problem from the wrong perspective (I'm being subjective here). Instead of blaming the bezel-less design, why not get rid of curved edges? Just make flat edges. Maybe not so thin, a little more bulkier (not by much, but I wouldn't mind adding 2-3 mm), so you could have a good grip. Go for an iPhone 5 bezel-less design. With no screen on edges, I see no problems holding it right. Besides, having that curved display on the edges makes the phone more expensive to make, so more expensive to buy. A flat, clean bezel-less screen would be far more easy to fabric, so it could have a lower price tag. Plus, it would also be practical, easier to handle. I just didn't get why every manufacturer went with curved margins and what's all the fuss about that. And it's not like I'm an iPhone fan or anything... I loved the old Sony Xperia design just as much. That edgy, clear cut design made it a beautiful phone and stand out from the crowd. Prolly I'l get bashed for this. Just my 0.02 €.

This review is only the reviewer's personal comments which I find it ridiculous. If you are so negative about these phones then don't use them.

I think the i.rings offer a solution to hard to reach areas with a large phone. I would want to see slim bezels to the xperia compact line so i can have a much smaller phone. Hope sony will still make a 4.7" 720p compact phone

I'd buy a phone with the dimensions of the xiaomi redmi 6 but with uniform bezels as thick as the mi mix 3's bottom one.

Years too late to post this opinion. A lot of people not just you have felt this way for years now. Manufacturers I assume read your commentary. And so would have been helpful to point out these opinions sooner.

That said, this is why I am hoping the upcoming Sony flagship does not suffer from these drawbacks.

You're obviously just a klutz. Stop blaming others for your inadequacies.

Somehow I am in Steve Jobs' design side with bezel-less (i.e iphone 4s bezel-less). It is very comfortable with one hand or two hands. The maximum size of phone may be the size of iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S8/A8 (2018). It is still enjoyable with one hand.
The true bezel-less may be possible if the phone is not physical form, but unvisible form just like we do the way google eyewear or something like Mission Impossible does.

What needs to change is for manufacturers to stop increasing the phone size. Bezel-less design is to allow maximum use of the phone surface for the screen display while preserving the compact phone size, but somehow that comes with increasing phone size, which defeats the purpose of a bezel-less design.

this is so right. if i may add, this bezelless design also makes the phones more fragile. i had the note fe and the note 8, but i sold them. well mostly my complaint was the curved display, but it also has to do with the fact that the phones were so fragile and that it is indeed difficult to hold when watching videos (i don't do alot of gaming). i don't have a problem with the tall aspect ratio, but trying to reach areas of the UI that are way up there makes you need to loosen your grip for a sec to adjust your hand, and given that these new phones are slippery there is always that heightened chance it could slip because of grip adjustment. yes, we could put on a case but that adds to the dimensions and make it even more difficult to reach high positioned UI elements with one hand without adjusting grip. if i were to speak for myself i really wouldn't mind bezels, especially the top and the bottom, if it would help with the grip and if they could add usesful things in those bezels- like powerful speakers as what razer did. i generally have mixed emotions about the tall aspect ratio of today's smartphone screens, on one hand there are these apps that have not adopted it yet then on the other wide resolution movies are a joy to watch in them compared to the regular 16:9. then again there are indications that it is what the future is and samsung's one u.i. is at least leading to a solution on the problematic hard to reach areas. nevertheless, there is no need for smartphones to be bezelless just for the sake of bragging rights.

All look the same to me. Should we start adding notches to our laptop and computer too? Since they are beautiful as you said.

Big screen are unpractical for small hands and regular hands ( ironically Asian's ^^ ) generally speaking the majority buys phones too big for their hands (in one hand use of course ) it may change but you should consider how it's techy/esthetic appeals to people and video content gets easier to look at, I'm not a fan but still... That's how it goes .
the simplest way, today, should be to take the best screen to body ratio in a small form factor permitting your thumb to reach all corners of the screen; with a case protecting and preventing palm issues .
The smaller the bezels the better it'll look while still being protected by the case.

Screens can be totally bezel free, but it do not need to be a touch-screen all the way to the screen edges to prevent accidental touches, making the "bezels" hidden under the screen! The front facing camera can be hidden under the screen, turning off pixels in front of the lens when the camera is used!

The Samsung S8/S9 family strikes a good balance IMO. There is just enough chin to hold it comfortably. Hope they've abandoned the bezel-less race by the time I need to upgrade next.

LG Superfan, 21 Jan 2019I kind of agree with it, bezel less will make phones boring... moreIt would be lovely if we got more variety in the devices offered. But I must say that I personally could not care less if the device looks 'boring' (if anything I would prefer that...)
For me a phone/phablet is primarily a TOOL, secondarily a toy, and absolutely NOT a bling-bling item. But of course to each their own.

I totally agree with this and think the screen ratio battle is nothing more than bragging rights for manufacturers and a tool for consumers to show off.

Some of the most beautiful phones from the last few years have had plenty of bezel and by allowing yourself bezel space, you give yourself more of an opportunity to create a unique design. These days you absolutely cannot tell the difference from one phone to the next.

4 of my favourite phones of recent years:
                                        Nokia Lumia 930
                                        Oppo Find 7
                                        OnePlus One
                                        Asus ROG Phone

All with bezels and all with an actual design to them.
