Exynos Galaxy S10 visits GeekBench, still behind the iPhone XS in single-core test

19 January 2019
Samsung prioritizes single-core over multi-core performance with its in-house chips and it's catching up with Apple.

unknown , 19 Jan 2019people still compare proccesors even if they run diferent ... moreAgain, incorrect comment as usual poping up. Geekbench 4 is written to perform same task on different OS. So cpu runs exactly same tasks not touching differences of different OS'es. It is very accurate between all OS'es cause cpu only doing math based calculations. So if A12 scores on Geekbech so high, it not because of iOS it is running it is because CPU is really powerful! Please dont comment if you dont understand how OS and CPU work and how are benchmarks are programmed to work. Because you dont look smart when you comment about things you dont understand.

Let's see how far they came from the 9810 in terms of thermal limits, throttling, scheduler, sustaining these scores, and power consumption.

Kudos to Samsung! It is hell of a beastly chipset. You should know that Android or iOS experience are widely dependent on single core perdormance. UI and most stock apps and all other Apps from Play store or App store are designed to run on single or dual cores. Only most demanding games take advantage of more power hungry and more efficient cores working together. This is going to be daily task champion in Android Realm, everything will run smooth and stady which such a beastly single core performance :)

In all speedtests between S845 and A11, 845 was beating a11 in video rendering, app loading, video recording and stuff.

Infact S845 thrashed A11 in sustained performance. A11 was like that athlete that would sprint for 100 metres and lag behind in the rest of 5km race.

Similar will the case with S855 and A12. S855 phones(especially from OnePlus etc) will beat iPhone Xs series in speedtests and sustainece of power.

Their multi-core would have been a lot better if they actually used A76s instead of A75s but I guess they had to get a smaller chip to accomodate their 8nm process since they couldn't do 7nm...

Shanti Dope, 19 Jan 2019Yes sure, most of the tasks today are now optimized to work... moreSadly the world doesn't run on your beliefs.

You just reiterated the same talk without addressing the real points.

                  1. Even mongoose cores are loosely based on ARM architecture just like Qualcomm's Kryo. They are all semi custom.

                  2. Apple iPhones are loading apps in an instant? Umm NO! You seem to have seen some iPhone from another parallel universe.

                  - As for advantage of Apple - When loading apps, their performance cores display their full power, while utilising other cores too. For short period, yes! But at least they do. Unlike Exynos.

                  - Exynos last year failed because Samsung went behind making their performance core too BIG chasing Apple numbers without realising if a 8 core small die processor could even handle this much power.

Result - In use, Samsung's powerful core could never flex it's muscle as the wattage consumed by it was too much and couldn't be sustained even for a second. All that power was limited to benchmark numbers only.

In the end, last year's Exynos was hell of a disappointment that was offering last generation performance thanks to stupidity by Samsung.

While S845 scoring even 1000 points less repeatedly thrashed it in app and game opening speedtests. As Snapdragon could perform at it's advertised numbers even in real life, not just benchmark apps.

                  3. You never addressed the multi core score. Such a low score clearly shows that with all cores activated, there is some serious level of throttling going on in Exynos 9820. There is no other way to explain those abysmal scores.

And that hints at another aspect - It will be an Exynos 9810 redux. Just a paper tiger.

                  4. GPU = Seen how much superior S855 GPU numbers are compared to Kirin 980 which employs Mali-G76 just like Exynos 9820 ?

Exynos will have just 2 more GPU cores than Kirin but at possible lower clock due to inefficient 8nm process.

So Exynos won't even touch Snapdragon GPU, let alone compete with it.

                  5. Antutu - Seen the scores of S855? Ranging anyhwere Between 365k - 395k.

What makes the disparity so much between S855 and 9820?

                  - Superior real world CPU performance. Infact much better Multicore even in benchmarks.

                  - Much superior GPU unit.

                  - Much superior AI unit.

                  - Much more efficient.

Last year too, i had debate with a guy who was a massive fan of Samsung who claimed based on leaked scores that Exynos 9810 will thrash S845.

I laughed at him. He challenged me saying that let's talk when Speedtests are out.

But when the Anandtech analysis and speedtests were finally out and S845 was whipping 9810, i messaged that Samsung fan so many times, he never replied.

That multimode is weak compared to competition

SquadBoi, 19 Jan 2019Does single core even matter on Android thoughBarely nowadays, but more poweful individual cores are.
Ever thought why iPhones could render videos in almost an instant, open and run Crysis in maximum possible graphical settings, load up heavy apps in less than 10 seconds, have a very good EIS in 4K, and record 4K 60fps videos without any restriction??
                      Exactly, more powerful individual cores!

To put into perspective on how ahead Apple chipsets are, a single Vortex core of the A12 Bionic is as powerful as dual Kryo 360 Gold cores of the Snapdragon 845. Let that sink in....

Abhi Dahiya, 19 Jan 2019Last year's Exynos too scored higher, yet failed miserably ... moreNot to mention Exynos this year is based on old and inferior A75 cores and 8nm process. So chances of it failing like last year are too high.

I don't think Samsung chip engineers even know what they are doing anymore. Have reduced the Exynos processor line-up to dust. Going bust chasing Apple.

Abhi Dahiya, 19 Jan 2019Last year's Exynos too scored higher, yet failed miserably ... moreYes sure, most of the tasks today are now optimized to work with multiple cores, but more powerful individual cores are necessary as well.
The Tempest core of the A12 Bionic is already about as powerful as a 1.9GHz Cortex A73 core, which explains why it could pretty much load up even the heaviest of apps in an instant.
Samsung phones are technically just horrible at handling heat, be it Exynos or Snapdragon model.
This year, the choice of using a normal Cortex A75 for the mid-level performance cores instead of an underclocked power hungry Cortex A76 is a step in the right direction, while their custom Mongoose M4 cores are going to destroy every Cortex A76 implementations from other phones.
So that leaves Qualcomm with the 7nm node as the only advantage, because I strongly believe that the Mali-G76 MP20 will be more powerful than the Adreno 640, as the MP10 is nearly as powerful as the Adreno 630 already, and 640 only brings up to 20% improvement, while MP20 could give off up to twice as much performance increase.

Shanti Dope, 19 Jan 2019Now imagine if Qualcomm also did something similar, and onl... moreLast year's Exynos too scored higher, yet failed miserably against Snapdragon in real world performance. Ever heard of Anandtech? Go read their analysis.

No processor uses just single core at any point of time. Load is distributed in small amounts to other cores too. And that's where Exynos failed. It just couldn't replicate that Geekbench score in real life even for 1 second. Cause too much battery drain, heating and throttling.

Similar case will be with this Exynos too. Don't believe me? Look at Multicore results. So pathetic. It clearly means their processor is bad at handling heat and extra load. And hence will repeat the same last year's failure.

I think it's time Samsung just gives up. They just can't make decent flagship processors.

Does single core even matter on Android though

Anonymous, 19 Jan 20199820s gpu will definitely beat 980s gpu but will most likel... moreWill it? Exynos 9820 only has 2 more GPU cores than Kirin 980, but most likely it's clocked lower. If they were built on the same process node then Exynos would've had an upper hand in power efficiency, but in reality instead of 7nm Exynos is based on 8nm node which is closer to 10nm in terms of architecture. I'd be surprised if it managed to beat Kirin in either performance or efficiency.
