Looks gimmicky. Still, i'm holding of from buying a phone till 2020 at the very least, but i hope that by then phone OEMs start making device that fit in the hand similarly as a normal 5-5.5inch device (bulkiness can be increased to 18mm when folded).

The last Oracle, 23 Jan 2019"The device doesn’t fold closed but rather folds backwards ... moreIve said it before, others innovate and chinese manufacturers push the idea out before the one who came up with the idea. But so far, Samsung is the only one doing an actual, functional foldable phone. Nokias downfall could have been avoided if the workers would of been able to make the products they wanted to make. Sadly, big bosses did not let that happen. They had the tech, money, engineers and innovation, but wrong leaders.
Apple seems to be heading into that direction, not so much Samsung. When you count on the marketshare and loyal customers and start being sloppy, its guaranteed downhill from there.
Heck if you look at AMD, it took them years upon years to get back to competition. Those who are willing to learn from mistakes and spend time and money on innovating survive.

This is the best implementation of a foldable phone that we have seen till now, including Samsung's and patent by Motorola. I hope they start to manufacture it soon.

What I understood from these comments here is that lots of them have already seen the Samsung's foldable phone design completely. Lol

Amazing prototype, now they only need to turn off the rows at the back when folded to save battery and perfect. Very nice. A bit afraid about the initial prices but someday...

If Samsung did it everyone be like "Overpriced!!! We dont need foldable phone. Useless!!!".
When Xiaomi did it, "This look nice and beautiful. It must be cheap. I might actually buy one".
The reaction is so funny. Lol. And everyone doesnt seem to mind the edge screen on Xiaomi foldable. No one complaining the aspect ratio too. Seem like Xiaomi worked with BOE display to make this. It definitely more beautiful than fugly bulky Flexpai. Kudos Xiaomi. Now, waiting for Huawei answer to this. In just a few days they will suddenly announced it too. Hahaha.

Anonymous, 23 Jan 2019Still seems more like a gimmick to me. If I need a large sc... moreBy that argument we would not have phablets at all, but only phone-sized devices - and yet phones are almost extinct, except as entry level devices, so people DO want larger but yet portable displays....
I would claim that we ALL would want something that is large when needed and could be crumbled away to nothing when not. The current technology can't do that.
But folding is a step in that direction, so we could again have a phone-sized device (fully one hand operable), that can be unfolded to a larger two-hand device when needed. A three part Z-shaped device could be about 16:9 both folded and unfolded - that would be quite handy iMHO. e.g. about 5" and 8½".

Oflife, 23 Jan 2019Totally disagree. Imaging: My Note 9 and S8 cameras are out... moreAs far as anyone can tell Xiaomi have released this phone so one has to wonder what are you talking about as there is no date on when this will come to market. Also, nobody said this was the finished product. This is what happens when one acts like they are an expert but does not take the time to read.

The first that comes out with something is almost always more expensive, and usually not fully finalized. See it as extended "proof of concept", so in CURRENT state this product is a"gimmick". But don't judge any future product with the same principle by it, it is not folding that is a gimmick. it needs to be developed....

Still seems more like a gimmick to me. If I need a large screen while out I will just bring a vastly more capable laptop with me.

This, I can totally see myself using.
Gorgeous when closed unlike the Samsung. I've been using a glass back for over the past 5 years and I'm not really worried about the screen being exposed.
Definitely needs to get some kinks sorted, but otherwise looks like the most practical way to do it.

EskeRahn, 23 Jan 2019And you said the same on the first touch phones, right?
... moreFirst iPhones were not that much expensive than flagships existed that time even with radically new OS, interface, ecosystem.
This flexible form factor is just an extension of tablet form factor. There is no new OS and R&D much significant than initial iPhones. It is merely scale of making large amount of flexible displays which might determine the cost of making flexible displays. Samsung, Apple and others have sort of mitigated flexible displays related risks by experimenting curved screens for few years. Hence my observation

SagarSK, 23 Jan 2019It is just one of those days, where the boss wants you to m... moreI really don't think Xiaomi would invest the kind of money needed to make such a one off for the boss.
Doubtless they are experimenting. But the biggest problem with any folding phone is that the inside of the fold has to bend more than the outside, and the outside has to stretch. It is hard to see how this can be overcome reliably and without being very prone to scratching.
If you were running a company like Xiaomi and you weren't interested in the lab prototypes, you'd be doing something wrong.
