Weekly poll: are hole-less phones the future or just a gimmick?

27 January 2019
There were two hole-less phones announced in as many days. Though the number of real-world issues solved by them seems lower than that.

Well honestly if wireless charging becomes as fast as normal one and wireless earbuds get to same price level as regular and as good, I think its alright. Replacing the volume buttons etc is a bit far fetched, but I dont know.. Cool that manufacturers want to try new things.

    Definitely a gimmick. 50% thinks it's a future. Damn!

Certainly the future but gimmick right now

I'm thinking more something that could be used like an underwater camera.

I think it's great that these companies are always creating new ideas and competing with each other... we all benefit from this...

How do I flash custom ROM then? Or simply clean flash official ROM whenever current one is broken?

Polen, 27 Jan 2019Less ports means more profits for the phone companies. We ... moreYep exactly. I'd never use Wireless headphones, because it's so much hassle, nothing convenient about it. I would use "wireless" (Hardly wireless, isn't it? The phone still must make contact with the wired "wireless" charger) charging in my car (No doubt it would be convenient to use a charging stand and not plug it every time i use it in my car), but that's it. And i can still do it if the phone has a usb port, there's 0 reason to remove it. Now if they make the phone charging out of thin air, that's a whole different story. Maybe i'd be willing to switch to bluetooth headphones too, then. Although the problem with bluetooth headphones is not just batteries and charging, but sound quality, interference, compatibility, you name it. They'll need lots of real innovations to make wireless practical.

Less ports means more profits for the phone companies. We were made to believe that talller display aspect ratio is cool and they sold to us 5 inch display phones in the name of 6 inch displays, now the folding displays are getting us back to wider aspect ratio displays. They removed the LED lights to give way to notch-less phones. Guys lets not be fooled easily. Will you carry your wireless charger everywhere with you? How many gadgets should one charge everyday, your phone, your watch, your headphones. Really, is that simplifying your life? And is this the end of the road for phone cases? We do not need innovation that comes at the expense of convenience

i guess iPhone would become iNothing soon

I can't really see this becoming the mainstream design for a while because as people have mentioned, when there's a serious problem you sometimes have to connect the phone without being able to boot it up. Relying on software functionality seems way too risky.

On the other hand, if they manage to achieve true waterproofing with this kind of design, I could see it being used pretty soon for specialized/niche phone lines (in the 'adventure' or 'rugged' sort of style).

It is certainly futuristic but technology has not yet reached that point.

Here's my opinion, again, on the matter:

Huge regression. No storage expansion. No ports for LOSSLESS, low latency and ultra high quality audio. No ports for fast, reliable data transfer.

I won't use third party apps or services for something as basic as data transfer.

Battery is almost dead but you need to use the phone? Too bad, gotta leave it on the wireless charger.

Ever got your phone saved from a shattered fate thanks to your headphones' cable or the USB charger? Those heroes won't save you next time.

                                      ADB operation is almost impossible.
Flashing is now way more dangerous. You risk bricking the device when flashing if connection is lost.
And what happens if the capacitive touch area on the side stop working? Can't turn on your phone anymore.

Blind people can praise all thet want. This isn't the future.

(Before someone say that external storage is slower, you can just install apps on the internal UFS storage, and store media files on the SD. This is actually better, as your precious fast storage is not wasted by data that do not need it. And it's cheaper to put an SD Card than going from 128GB to 256GB)
