Samsung is a fast learner. Finally, Samsung has started giving Xiaomi a real fight with the aggressively priced Samsung M series (midrange level) which are a good match to Xiaomi's Redmi phones in pricing and specifications.

While the Redmi Note 7 does have a better IPS display and an IR blaster, the Samsung M20 is no slouch with its WAY larger battery capacity and DEDICATED micro sd card slot (not that stupid hybrid dual SIM in Xiaomi phones). Plus, the more popular Samsung brand and aggressive marketing team behind Samsung will really have a lot of say on which brand will sell more phones in 2019, at least in India where the competition between the two is neck to neck.

This will be a good fight between Samsung and Xiaomi in the real battleground for ultimate market dominance where midrange phone sales numbers are VERY CRITICAL to a phone brand's long term market dominance, success and survival. It's good competition that will benefit smartphone buyers.

I can understand why Xiaomi is throwing shades at Samsung's M series phones. The insults are meant to discourage buyers not to buy Samsung's M series phones and instead, wait for Xiaomi's upcoming Redmi phones. Also, a planned upgrade of the Redmi Note 7 (Redmi Note 7 Pro) is a clear manifestation Xiaomi considers the Samsung M series phones a direct competition to the Redmi phones both price-wise and specs wise. Xiaomi is not about to easily relinquish its fragile #1 position in the Indian market (the #2 biggest smartphone market in the world next to China). Let's see which brand dominates the Indian market in 2019. I have always preferred Xiaomi phones in the past (bought 7 Xiaomi phones and only 1 Samsung device for our household in the past 4 years), but with these strategic changes to Samsung's midrange pricing and feature set (that 5000mAh battery and dual sim with dedicated [not hybrid] micro sd slot), I'm seriously considering the Samsung M over the Redmis.

If only the Samsung M series had IR blaster then I wouldn't have difficulty choosing between the 2 brands. Right now, I'd recommend the Samsung if you don't care about remote functionality or don't mind an inferior TFT screen with limited viewing angle compared to IPS. Otherwise, I'd still recommend the Xiaomi. Anyway, good job Samsung! Keep the huge battery, dedicated micro sd cqrd slot and Xiaomi-like aggressive pricing. Better yet, add an IR blaster. And as for Xiaomi, up your game with even larger battery capacities. And please, stop using that stupid hybrid slots in your Redmi phones. People who are permanent dual SIM users don't want to choose between a second SIM and a micro sd card expansion. They want BOTH!

TFT is certainly better for the eyes. AMOLED and OLED are displays with PWM-controlled brightness which is irritating, and possibly damaging, for the eyes over time. (it means the display flickers on and off at a fast rate to simulate varying brightness)

Anonymous, 05 Feb 2019Your samsung has made the 'fake' sensorI didn't say "fake" you said that which suggests you think it is. What I said was it wsd8a proper one as the 660 doesn't support it so the images are interpolated to 48mp by software. I actually think both are good phones for the price. The Samsung has the edge on battery and the Xiaomi has the edge of processor. The Samsung second camera is a more useful wide angle can but the Xiaomi has an IR blaster so it's fairly even match

Anonymous, 05 Feb 2019Your samsung has made the 'fake' sensorShutup !!! And firstly lemme tell you that its snap 660 which dont support 48 mp camera !!! And bcoz of that redmi's 48 mp camera is being called fake nobody cant blame samsung for this !!!

Interesting. They are right about the panel, it could be much better.
Though for a first try, the phones aren't half bad. They do need some polish and the cameras need to be better. Otherwise, they're good

Fake 48MP of RN7 is of no use.
Launch Redmi 7 (small form factor) with decent processor and type C port.
Also Galaxy M series is not good either.
Any phone with size more than 5.5" with 19:9-19.5:9 ratio is crap and should not be launched.

It's not the MP count, but picture quailty and that is down to sensor size, optics and processing. The sensor size in the Redmi Note 7 is big, and in low light it outperforms Samsung's Note9 and S9+, so it is very doubtful that the M series will come close to the Redmi.

I feel bad for xiaomi, these samsungs has PLS TFT panel which is upgraded version of ips, but I can agree many users from india will mispell that screen as TFT just because of its odd name. This false advertising by xiaomi will make impact also... However xiaomi has better cpu and camera game this round, also more premium build quality. Iam not a samsung fan, but I like what they trying to do
