I just hope sensor tech gets better in every phone(including something new in xperias too), we use this one layer with Bayer for a long time already. Even of I use latest camera hw and sw, phone not capturing to that depth of detail, color and fov as I see is sad.

      High MP count plus pixel-binning may produce better stills (less noise especially in lower light conditions), but how about video recording? Does pixel-binning work during video recording? No?

      I rather have big sensor (1", 1/1.5", 1/1.7") and moderate MP count (thus big pixel size) for top-notch video quality, while utilizing image-stacking for stills to produce excellent dynamic range and less noise.

        LG Superfan, 15 Mar 2019How about 1" sensors?Look no further than for Lumix CM1. It's a smart camera (a mix between a phone and a compact camera) with a giant 1" sensor. Guess what's also big in this phone? Optics. It's a 21mm thick device.

        I'm waiting for 12 MPix 1/2" sensor, with no pixel binning. Hell, even a 10 MPix one, that is still big enough for 4K video. Add Googles Night Sight magic and damn, that could even be an overkill. But that's my dream. Maybe one day it will become real, but not soon.

          And yet even 10 years old DSLR cameras made by Cannon or Nikon will outpreform any cell phone made since now very easy.

            Stacked cmos has tons of advantages over regular ones but they do not use this.
            They copied Sony motion eye just to offer 960fps HD. Nothing more.

            1) Sony has Predective capture that works with full resolution and AF. For example Pixel 3 Top Shot cant use AF and only 1MP.

            2) 960fps can be done 1080p without new hardware

            3) 4K HDR hybrid log gamma needs this kind of sensor because the amount of data is huge.

            4) Xperia 1 does 10fps with AF/AE + eye AF tracking

            5) less blur because anti distortion shutter and less rolling shutter during vids

            All this could be used for s9/s10. But hardware is being wasted.
            Stacked cmos is very great tech, Sony does not offer to Nikon, Fuji, Panny etc ...

            Sammy has very advanced cam tech when they made cameras years ago.
            All this knowledge is not being used.

                  I hope the limits of HDR10 aren't restricted on the S10 due to the limitations of the Snapdragon 855 processor. I am guessing the Exynos version can push the dynamic range in the S10 to beyond DSLR territory, but because the Exynos and Snapdragon versions would have different results, both versions have been limited in dynamic range and the full potential of HDR10 video recording has been curbed.

                        Give me a 12/16 MP sensor with big pixels and fast photo stacking and I'd choose it over a small sensor with tiny pixels and huge pixel count any time.

                        Even high-end cameras need photo stacking (sometimes that's done on pc) to get a sharp, noise-free shot.

                        Yes, mobile photography has come a long way, but I'm not digging this whole 48mp trend when the actual usable photo is still 12mp

                              In the end of 2018 someone started to update the wikipedia page of Exmor sensors.

                              Now even sensors of 1", micro 4/3, aps-c, full frame and mid format are there listed.

                              There was an exmor RS called imx666. This sensor would be 1/1.8" ( someone said 1/1.5" on weibo) with total count of 66.6MP. But you could use up to 50MP (1:1) or 48MP (4:3) ... There was also 21:9 mode, which could mean this is going to be made for a Sony phone.
                              The specs of the sensor also mentioned DRAM , exactly like imx400 (xz1) and imx445 (X1) .

                              But it would be out just in mid 2019.

                                Samsung has because they made their own version. Then they pay Sony Semicon to make a copy.

                                Sony sells sensors to Leica, Fuji, Nikon, Panasonic etc ... But stacked is kept for their cameras. Also they cost much more to be made.

                                  You can use downsample to keep same amount but with smaller file size.
                                  Like Lumia 1020 (5MP) and Xperia Z line (8MP) ...

                                      Whackcar, 15 Mar 2019People are bashing the high MP cameras without even underst... moreYou could use 100mp sensor for 12mp images in a way that you would stack more, for better hdr and color resolution, using Bayer means lesser resolutions are more true to life, less guessing for colors.
                                      Another thing, it would be great for zoom in low light for about up to 3x, f1.6 and f2.4/f3.5 is different.

                                        I'm for 100mp in ultra clarity. Phone photography was never about fighting full size cameras on pixel size, but considering almost no use of multiple same fov cameras for better quality(not bokeh) one sensor style is the best then. Stacking is important but to users is Huawei way of full res/hdr more exciting. You could as well consider it stacking, but depends on brand how capable sw they got. Also I wish sensor tech gets better so the Sony is not the only one with superior triple layer sensor, those on such hi res & small pixel size would perform better than ordinary sensors used by the rest(z, xa, xz, 1 line)
