Counterclockwise: periscope cameras are old news, optical zoom dates back to 2004

17 March 2019
And back then phones could zoom in with just a single camera - no need for 2, 3, 4, 5 cameras!

talha5007, 17 Mar 2019only of Nokia have adopted android in time.Nothing would have changed. Android became useful with GB and it lost the lag with JB. Nokia was doomed to fall and it did. RIP.

the aperture is a characteristic of the lens, not of the sensor. An f/2 lens is always an f/2 lens, no matter on what sensor you put it. You can mount a lens on a "Full frame" camera, then you can mount it on a APS-C camera, then you can find the way to mount it on a phone, in all the cases it will be an f/2 lens.

still more than 2x bigger than biggest current sensor and yet wasn't hot selling device neither 1020 with slightly smaller sensor

3p, 17 Mar 2019Don't forget these cameras: https://m.dpreview.com/articles... moreWow, such an old article...
So old, I wasn't even born at that time of publishing that article!
Same year I was born, but 8 months later than the month it was published

If companies realise that bigger sensors are the way to go then we will see everything a 4 camera phone can do in one camera. Companies focus on slimmer and slimmer and slimmer, f this!
I want a 9 to 10mm phone with a huge camera sensor and a huge battery inside. A metal shiny colourless back and frame, slightly bigger bezels than other phones for my powerful front facing speakers and great front camera, a 5,3inch 16/9 oled screen with proper width from the inside to completely eliminate burn in issues that thin phones have..
Just make a phone that will be strong enough to deal with drops. Im so done with the bezeless trends and multisensor phones.
Take a hint phone makers! Be different!
Just because no one is doing it, it doesn't mean it's bad decision. If only Sony had keep their uniqueness..

For me a combo RGB + mono is enough.
                  Both 1/1.8", 27mm, f2.0 and 20MP.

For those who does not know, the f is not same for all sensor sizes.

                  F2.0 Full frame > f2.0 apsc > f2.0 m4/3 > f2.0 1" > f2.0 1/2.3" > f2.0 1/2.6"

                  F2.0 + 1/2.55" = f14 + FF

I don't care about the camera quality that much to be honest..
I think GoPro should team up with Samsung. That would probably destroy every brand out there.

All phones are reaching end game triangle screen with no bezels. The design is practically the only thing people talk about now, and also... the camera. Cameras are a way to sell a phone and get over your competitors now. So imagine one of these companies coming out with a phone slightly thicker but with a sensor 3x bigger which is still not that much bigger than our tiny sensors already but the quality will be incredible. No other phone will compete with that quality unless they do it themselves. In a market that hasn't got much to talk about anymore, having camera that could potentially disrupt the portable camera market seems like a strong way to go.

You may ask why? Well with the current trend of i want thinest device and biggest screen plus it has to have 2 side glass, what you hoping for never gonna happen!

                                Don't forget these cameras: https://m.dpreview.com/articles/7373704240/minoltadimagex

Anyway, having sensor of decent size behind periscope, completely ignoring lens brightness, would require phones 1cm thick... which I'm not sure buyers can get used to again.

In many ways thanks to the iPhone's skinny form factor, smartphone cameras have taken a step backwards. If phone remained 1.5 to 2 times as thick as today, they could easily have a periscope type camera with a fast constant f-stop, as well as much better optics and battery life. Plus the 1/2.5" -1/1.7" sensor would seem the perfect size for smartphone photography.

I think the perfect smartphone camera could be:
                                  1. One with a 10x zoom with a constant f-stop of 2.0.
                                  2. Atleast 10MP (if not 12MP), and an 1/2.5" sensor or larger.
                                  3. If the f-stop is not 2.0, they it would require dual or Triple Triple ISO.

Btw, this article forgot to mention the Panasonic CM1. It has arguably the best camera in a smartphone for photos. Barring none.

And back then, it was optical zoom! Not hybrid like they play optical today!
