This is most likely for PR, there's no point in shoving a bunch of 100MP cameras onto your phone if your camera software is terrible

I don't know much about cameras (so don't flame me for this) but maybe this is using HTC's Ultra-Pixel tech from almost 8 years ago to EMULATE that style of pixels. It'd be cool but 100MP...Lenovo (let alone, a ton of other phone manufacturers) are trying too hard to market the cameras and forgetting the more important aspects of phones: useful hardware.

By the way, 100 megapixels isn't unrealistic regarding diffraction. Iphone Xs can take quite sharp 12 megapixel 52mm photos with an aperture diameter of 2.5mm, this means that an aperture diameter of at least 2.5mm is necessary in order to take quite sharp 26mm 48 megapixel photos. The Huawei P30 Pro main camera has an aperture diameter of 3.47mm, this means that a theoretical 72mm equivalent smartphone camera (physical focal length = 6mm x 3.47/2.5 = 8.3mm , f-number = 2.4, 12mm² sensor) with a 3.47mm aperture diameter could achieve the same sharpness as Apple's 52mm camera. In order to achieve the same level of details with a 26mm camera, you would need ≈ (72/26)² x 12.2 megapixels = more than 90 megapixels

100MP on a tiny sensor it's useless and just a marketing ploy. Only medium format cameras like the ultra expensive Hasselblad can take real advantage of the 100MP.
