The Nokia 9 was simply released for the fans who have been patiently waiting, like me. Each time there was rumors of its' release, I'd wait ..MWC was the last straw, had they not announced it, I was going to go for the Pixel.
Nokia was planning on holding out for the release of the "finalized" device ...but they needed to release something to keep their fans, gain some headlines and test interest for such a device from them. This is why they released it in limited quantity, because they want to focus more on the "finalized," consumer version ...this one was for the fans and testing purposes.
By the time they release the "finalized" version, they will have perfected the camera software as well as the camera ...I also believe, they wont be using light or the 5 cams in the "finalized" version as they realized early on, that the 5 cams were amazing for it's original release in early 2018 but they already knew what 2019 phones were capable of.

This variation of multiple camera setup is better than just simply going by what's the trend.
This way, we could discover more things and improve upon them.
Wide angle and telephoto capabilities can be had by using smartphone camera equipments for those functions, but the great amount of depth information can't be simulated by any camera add-ons.

And most likely it won't make it to the top 5 category. The concept is superb. But choice of imaging sensors (along with other hardware), is a very important factor.

All the reviews so far were negative. Don't expect too much, it's a good idea but a disappointing execution. There's a reason Nokia will make this one in limited quantity only.

I wish they would release a modern Android Lumia 1020. Based on a comparison I saw, the 1020 still competes in quality, even besting some recent devices. Stick a 855 processor in, a decent battery and oled, and it could be great. Oh, and keep the polycarbonate builds. I think some would tolerate the slightly bigger bump, for an epic camera.

This phone is a no-no. Disappointed processing time, the pictures may be good in normal light but in low light it sucks, even my Z3C snaps better images in low light. I wasnt able to use this phone more than 5 days, sent it back to the supplier. Its useful only for those who are living on facebook and instagram.

No notch nonsense, no hole in the screen, small bezels, great design from Nokia but old SoC is a no no.

Only interested in camera, display, battery. Fps is already proved to be a failure.. camera app is slow.

This phone represents the Nokia philosophy: Keep dreamers in their dreams with a lot of promises.
5 modules for nothing really impressive, too slow to snap a photo, all the famous Android One bugs with market comparable updates, old soc, small battery for a thick, heavy and tall device...
Sorry but it's a waste of time to test that phone, review something more serious please...

This smartphone will be failure for sure.Nokia can compete in budget segment,but in flagship no.This smartphone came to late on the market.

Instead of multi focal length like for example 16, 26 and 52mm cameras, the HMD chose 5 cameras with same FL. Three are BW and two are RGB. But why?
1) because it is easier to fit 5 smaller than one much larger like 1/1.4" for example. No brand today wants to sacrifice design to have something like Lumia 808 or 1020.
2) monochrome can vastly improve quality of the photo taken by the RGB, something ultra wide and tele cannot. Also one mono can absorbs up to 3x the light of same sized RGB sensor due to no bayer filter. So two RGB + three BW can act like 9-11 RGB sensors catching light.
3) DR goes higher with larger sensor area , considering these 5 as a bigger one.

This Nokia camera setup has comparable DR to APS-C size sensor camera.
Dynamic Range is the most important specification in every camera sensor.

But, see, majority shoot in JPG. Its a fact. Above 99% mobile users shoot JPG. Don't have statistics so I'm assuming something here.
Of course, if the final .jpg image is not good (or better than competition), then you can't hide behind the "RAW" or "amount of Photographic information processed" argument.
In some ways or the other (versatility, quality, low light, depth of field, etc) the JPG must be better or its not a good news for Nokia.
That said, I second your fear regarding this phone. I have a feeling its awesome, but might not be recognised as good.

I think you gave it a try earlier but I couldn't understand it fully.
Even P20 Pro's triple setup was easier to understand than this.
All I could get was that 3 cameras are B&W, and apparently the depth of field looks "real", whatever that means and there's some more benefits related to focus.
