Redmi Pro has MIUI 10, which is excellent and it brought new feature over the old ones, just like android verion would and they update the security patch level as well.

Stop being so caught up in the android os version number, it's not the most relevant part of the phone. If it for some reason is for you, then get an android one phone, or pixel.

I'm glad I never bought a Xiaomi phone before and I'll never buy one in the future!

Hm,I think that Xiaomi finally become greedy. First they said that will no more produce cheap flagship devices, now they cancelled update for their older budget smartphones. Next is basic redmi note 7 device for global market, for the same price like redmi note 7 pro in China and India. If they change strategy of selling cheap devices they will lose market share for sure.

Anonymous, 05 Apr 2019so.. the "newest" is RN4 which announce jan 2017.. so about... moreActually Xiaomi did not provide any major update to Redmi Note 4. It was launched with Android 6 Marshmallow in January 2017 when Android 7.0 Nougat was already out in the market. When Google release Android 8.0 Oreo in August 2017 Xiaomi release Nougat (Which was already 1 year old by that time) for Redmi Note 4 & that also Android 7.0 not even 7.1.2.

People are not wrong in saying that it's getting 2 years of updates and that's enough.
The thing is, long update cycles were one of the biggest USPs of Xiaomi devices. They used to boast of updating even 3-4 year old devices with latest skins.
They are now losing their biggest USP, obviously because of the dozens of devices they have launched during the past couple years.
Hallmark of a good brand is providing better support than competing brands. Xiaomi is loosing that in the quest to launch models after models in similar price range.

"Xiaomi has been known for updating even five-year-old smartphones to its latest MIUI, but it seems like this practice is about to end."

No choice. OEMs like Xiaomi are "FORCED" by Google to follow the android update policy set by Google which is 3 years. By doing so, this allows OEMs like Xiaomi to earn more $$ into Lei Jun's pockets instead of "wasting" $$ on development of the ROM for older devices.

Even the stock Android phones don't get updates more than 2 or 3 years. And this includes expensive phones too. And people are complaining about 100€ phones not getting updates.
I think some people don't have anything better to do in their lifes, just to complain about this and that.

I'm OK with Xiaomi doing this because my Redmi cost just over £100. I can buy one every two years ten times, which would mean support for 20 and I have still spent less than the most expensive flagship phones.

The new £1000+ flagship phones are a phenomenal waste of money. I really don't know how they get away with offering such limited support. If I was spending that amount I would demand longer support, there is no excuse for it. Imagine spending that amount of money on anything else and being told its unsupported in two years, we wouldn't accept it.

It's cool for a cheap phone though. I'm looking to upgrade my phone anyway :)
