ARM cuts ties with Huawei in a devastating blow

22 May 2019
The ripple effect of the US-imposed ban on Huawei continues.

There is a very simple solution for Huawei - just move their HQ from China to -say- Canada or Germany. Thereafter they wouldn't be "Chinese" anymore. Problem solved. Many western companies moved their HQ for various reasons (usually tax evasion). e.g. Fiat/Chrysler has their HQ in the Netherlands and is technical neither a US nor an Italian company.

Of course, the Chinese government would never allow that ... for obvious reasons ...

Good! I have nothing against Huawei in particular but I do really hate how chinese are doing "business". And I speak from my own very unpleasant experience when my products were ripped off and my own custom drivers (for which I paid for each version) were hacked and used now by plenty of HW clones made by... chinese copycats. Go trump and put them in their knees! Make them learn that stealing is NOT doing business!
Let them smash their heads on making actual silicon chip from scratch (and here I'm speaking about starting with instruction level and arhitecture and not buy ARM licenses), build their own OS (a failed one from the start!) and work hard to gain top three positions in the world. When they will do that then I'll say I was wrong. until then they are not more than a bunch of thieves... PLENTY of thieves.

Anonymous, 22 May 2019For once it will be interesting to see what happens but mor... moreThey voted an anti-free market president. It's on them that they will be losing the trust of the markets. China is also anti-free market. So all that is left currently is EU, not very free market themselves either, but certainly more than China and US. All and any country/region that was pro free market saw its GDP going star-way . I mean EU leaders are too stupid to use this chance , but of they were not they would had become the bastion of the free market, now that China and US are communist to a point...

Also most Africa is in the palm of China anyway so they might just do that to! :D

Anonymous, 23 May 2019this is the death blow. RIP Huawei.? what? all their chips can be literally replaced with their own Kirin chips and now that this happens they will have full government support, literally you are going to create a monster, once you force their hand in the future they will just compete with all these chips on the intl market. Lets see in 10 years when more scrubs and crying and whining about China stealing all their shit again ......

Luxor, 23 May 2019I see. So, future Huawei laptop should run with Linux. Yes you do, Intel controls x86 , AMD tried to improve it with XOP FMA4 guess what Intel didn't like it, and we start to see risk-v implementations superior to x86

All the people blaming Trump, you need to know this stupidity has been going on since Obama's time. Trump is just a puppet here.

All the people blaming Apple, you need to know Apple doesn't care about market share. They just want profit.

People who think Huawei is doomed because of this move, you're wrong. If the Chinese can copy jets worth billion of dollars then these CPUs are nothing. Have faith in them.

BTW if this doesn't stop soon then this might lead into a war. Politicians have a habit of acting more stubborn as the issue gets worse.

Laptops and desktops used by Huawei might already be running Linux rather than depending on windows cause most tech giants run on Linux based operating systems specially server level

Buy Huwai support the competitor of america this price will decline. China is the country for which smart phones are affordable now. No problem in buying huwai phones because in no case you are going to alter the arm processor inside it.

Note that there is nothing stopping Huawei from modifying/upgrading the Kirin 980/985 by themselves: "necessity is the mother of invention."

If ARM won't help then Huawei will have to do the upgrade themselves!
Huawei has the current designs to work from.

Now is the time for Huawei to invest some cash in RISC-V.
