TSMC will continue making chips for Huawei

23 May 2019
This means that Kirin chipsets and Balong modems can still be manufactured. But Huawei has no phones to put them in.

Bad year for Huawei. Gsmarena should remove Huawei and HTC and LG from first menu section.

You have mistaken core design adaptation with architecture. Like how Coffe Lake cores on Intel CPUs are built upon x86-64 architecture.

I'm very sad for Huawei. The only company that could overtake both Apple and Samsung. Hope Huawei won't die and will survive.

That's good to know. I do feel bad for Huawei, honestly. At someone is out there to help them.

I never owned a Huawei smartphone but probably will never own one from there. Had my chances before though. But at the same time, I don't want to see a company like this go down like that. Just stay away from our American shores. Stick to Asia.

United States is content with their Apple-Samsung duopoly.

US should ban TSMC now because they are not follow order.

This is ridiculous. They are going to ban Google services and let them makes chipset with their own modem which is the most important component for spying. Obviously the ban is not meant mainly for security reasons, it's meant for something else.

Shanti Dope, 24 May 2019ARM cutting partnership with them means Huawei will be forc... moreThey do not only need to design their own chip (i.e. competing with ARM's Cortex), but also need to design their own architecture. This, will require developers to develop yet another set of build ports. Back then, I had a cheap Android tablets, using MISP chipset, another RISC chipset other than ARM. And sure did, some of apps didn't even run on it. Because the dev only publishing ARM-compiled codes. Why? The user number is superficial. Why bother?

Designing their own architecture, then their own chip build (both CPU and GPU) are quite lengthy process. And this might only prevail at China itself. I currently doubt it will well spread outside China. Because of aforementioned developer preferences.

Samsung could somehow do so with their own Exynos chipsets.
I would assume that their decision to just employ ARM's designs is just to save cost for R&D and focus the money on other aspects like the camera, battery, software, etc. instead.
With how much money Huawei has gained in the last couple of years, I think it would be a good investment for them to start selling their own chip designs to others and make a lot of profit from it.

If Huawei has started their own chip design last year, it would take them at least 3-years (minimum) before it could even test it. Not counting how long before it reaches in the devices for manufacturing.

There are 2 primary architectures with their own machine code, so even if they somehow manage to have a non referential architecture, the capability to port stuff on it would be worse than windows on ARM.
