With Belle ready to be released across all Symbian^3 devices, Carla already showing up in various developer forums, and Skype & Microsoft Office products now getting released on Symbian phones...does this rumor make sense? For sure, Symbian is in rapid decline in Western Europe. But Asia made up most ot the 18+ Million handsets sold last quarter. To note, these sales increased quarter to quarter. So why would Nokia abandon the platform so early. It makes no sense. Sure, it woud lower costs...but at a significant cost to the top line.
Neither Elop nor Ballmer want to see the platform tank so quickly, simply because a massive install base is just as likely to move to other ecosystems BEFORE Windows Phone (w/Apollo) is ready to carry them over to a highly capable mobile environment (4Q12). Both companies want to bolster Symbian between now and 2013, not kill it.
I'm sure Symbian's future devices will be limited to key products that build on Nokia's known strengths and not necessarily hit every price point, as in the past. More specifically, the higher end is now with Lumia, and the lower end has been somewhat encroached upon by more capable S40 devices and the potential reentry of a Linux/Harmattan device (Meltemi rumored to take over from both S40 and Symbian in the value to discount price categories).
But to completely kill off Symbian now seems rediculous and irrational. Sounds like someone is playing a PUT trade.

Easy way to make Symbian profitable: port s60 on a bunch of low cost, qwerty bar handsets. Develop a stable, always on, push email application and nokia maps and turn by turn navigation. The phones would sell like crazy all over the world, especially in emerging markets. It would cost accenture nothing to make a phone similar to the e63 today, with even better specs.

AnonD-11222, 05 Feb 2012becoz i use to love Nokia but now its time to move towards ... moreI had an E51 and I thought that it was boring and getting outdated so I went for the smarter than a smartphone samsung jet (S8000) and I really regret each dollar I paid for it!!! I'm now back with my E51 and I'm currently using joikuspot on it for tethering to get online with my laptop. Saumsung is junk! don't waste your money for the bells and whistles. it is just rolling out new models without testing and debugging them to keep the competition. The AMOLED screen is bullshit! you can never read it in sunlight! the GPS is fake it just works with google maps and just with A-GPS. The phone restarts itself EVERYTIME i'm browsing the web and worst of all I woke up one day and my phonebook was EMPTY!! so if your money is hard earned and you are planning to use your phone for a long time, stick to NOKIA or APPLE.
Nokia is like a BMW, simple and powerful while Samsung is like a KIA, beautiful and crappy! don't waste your money man!

adi, 05 Feb 2012this is a pity! maybe then make some meego phones? meego do... more...yes, my dream a fusion of the n8 and the n9 with MeeGo and N9 desgin... 1gb ram from the n9 is enough, the device will only need an 1,4 dualcore cpu!! this would be the perfect phone... :)

Nokia should go with all thre OS's... WP7, Symbian and MeeGo and se which one sells best - then keep this best selling OS as the major OS (and adiditionaly keep selling the other OS's also)!

this is a bad time for nokia to announce the bad news especially when the market is not yet saturated with their windows phone. no people will hold off buying the rest of nokia's symbian phone and probably buy other phones
