Phones with 108MP and 10x optical zoom cameras may be coming next year

17 July 2019
That was shared by the usually reliable @IceUniverse. Qualcomm and Credit Suisse have made similar predictions.

This might be fake news. A smartphone camera that is equivalent to 10x27mm = 270mm would likely need an aperture diameter of approximately 9mm in order to be sharp due to diffraction. Huawei's periscope 125mm equivalent tele camera has an aperture diameter of approximately 4.25mm. So 10x zoom is likely related to 16mm or maybe even wider 12mm. Then in this case there would be no improvement in tele capabilities.

Regarding diffraction a 108 megapixel sensor makes totally sense when you use a main camera with the same aperture diameter as the P30 Pro's main camera. But as the smallest pixel size is 0.8 micrometers currently, it would require a 69mm² sensor, so this rumor isn't likely.

I remember back in the day when i compared xperia z2 and s7 edge. Yes, the s7 edge wass better in white balance and exposure but the details on the z2 21mp were extraordinary.

Sony's compact camera is indeed a great choice for any photographers looking for ultra-compact body and good JPEG color rendering. One question though, when you take photos do you zoom a lot? Because otherwise RX100VA sounds like a cheaper and better option especially during nighttime, apart from some minor inconveniences such as the lack of touchscreen(and that's the one I'm willing to give it a try).

Not bothered about 108mp but give me 5x optical zoom as standard on all phones over £300 & 10x optical zoom on phones over £500 please. Google Pixel will probable have 5x zoom in 2021.

Out of the topic, i'm gonna buy the great compact Sony RX100 VI this month, replacing my old Leica D-Lux 5 (2010). It serve me well but today the image looks identical as my Mate 20 lol (some situation even Mate 20 are better). I need more power on the go, street style photography.

Uaprof of a new xperia was found .. it says 5040x2160.
                            Code J8220.

While ago on weibo, someone posted that from 2019 no more FHD/QHD xperia, just more.
Another person (that posted cam would be 12MP 16/26/52mm) said 5K screen could show up this year but it was not 100% sure.

Shui8, 17 Jul 2019A 1/1.5" sensor size? Ok maybe 1.5 micron seems illogical f... moreEven with 1.2µm pixel pitch, at 108MP the sensor would be still larger than 1"(Just for your reference, RX100V has the 20.1MP stacked sensor with 2.4µm pixels). In order to fit all the pixels into a 1/1.5" sensor it can only be 0.7µm at max, which is just as small as the wavelength of some visible lights therefore the disadvantage of having a quad bayer array would become a lot more obvious.

Shanti Dope, 17 Jul 2019I think the smartphone industry isn't ready for 60MP sensor... moreSony is not going to sell stacked sensor to other. They created this years ago for their Cybershot RX100 series. Then they made versions for A9 and Xperia (imx400/imx445).

This tech was never been available to any other company. Not Nikon, not Fuji, not Apple etc. Samsung has it because they made their own version in late 2017. Since, they did not have any interest to share it either. They pay Sony Semicon to make an exmor version of their stacked isocell.
This kind of sensor costs much more than regular cmos.

                                - Sony Semicon have stuff they are allowed to sell to anyone interested. One example is imx586. Many other sensors are available too.

                                - There are sensors that are exclusive, made just for determinated client. Like the sensors used by Apple (since iphone 6), Samsung ( since s5) and Huawei (imx600, imx630).

                                - There are tech created by Sony Imaging made exclusively for Sony. Sony Semicon is not allowed to share it. This includes Motion Eye sensors.

Companies are using 1/2.55 because they want to. Xperia since 2013 were using 1/2.3". HTC had 1/2.3", Nexus 6p had 1/2.3" and Pixel 1 too.

Someone asked about why not 1". Well, sensor of this size takes much more space. It jas 123mm2 ( 1/2.55 has 24mm2). The lens elements get thicker, there is more distance between them and larger sensor generates more heat (maybe reason huawei uses much lower video bitrate)

I think without any design issues (uglyness of old nokia ) limit is 1/1.6" for 26mm .

If phones will take even better pictures is okay, if not idc. Still idc, cameras is good enough for me as it is.

If for 78mm (3x zoom from 26mm wide ) they already have to use awful 8MP 1/4" ( bad sensor even for front camera), imagine with 250, 260 and 280mm ?
Even if they count 10x from ultra wide (providing 160mm ) the hardware has to be worse.

Unless the phones come with 1,5cm at least , no way they can fit even 1/3.4" as periscope. This is waste of time. There is no point of taking photo of something that is 400m away of photos ends up awful quality.

Why not creating a huge file and crop? I dont remember if this is what pixel 3 does already.

People saying 108MP are useless I am pretty sure these sensor will have binning and you will get images with 12-25MP resolution and sensor size possibly be bigger than 1/1.8

Hope its upto 10x not just jump directly to it
