Phones with 108MP and 10x optical zoom cameras may be coming next year

That was shared by the usually reliable @IceUniverse. Qualcomm and Credit Suisse have made similar predictions.

Nick Tagataka, 17 Jul 2019Pixel binned to 25MP with an effective pixel size of 3&micr... moreA 1/1.5" sensor size? Ok maybe 1.5 micron seems illogical for the sensor, 1.2 should be subtle.

1/1.5" sensor size Quad Bayer
1.2 micron pixel size
100mp

Pixel binning = 25mp at 2.4 micron pixel size.

Mate 20 & P30 Pro using 40mp 1/1.7" sensor, with 1.0 micron pixel. Their 10mp resulting in 2.0 micron. But i do agree about the processing power for the crazy 100mp resolution, needs advance ISP along with DRAM.

Honestly, if the megapixel bump goes this far then it becomes quite useless and won't improve the image quality in any way. 40/48MP is good enough, 64MP is a bit of an overkill but should still provide decent details at full magnification, but 108MP? First of all it's obvious that plastic lens elements used on a smartphone cannot resolve over 100MP of details so detail wise there wouldn't be an improvement from 64MP one, second the ISP would have hard time processing this amount of data even in real-time HDR mode, and without a soldered-on DRAM the sensor wouldn't have a fast enough readout speed to allow all the computational multi frame imaging given such a high resolution and presumably a large sensor size. At this stage I'd rather have a 1/1.2" 25MP sensor with no pixel binning whatsoever.

Anonymous, 17 Jul 2019Why not bring out a 25 MP sensor instead of a 100 MP sensor... morecorrect what's the use of higher Megapixel if they don't know how to take a good shot. all they know is the higher the MP the better also not consider if the resolution if it is 1080p or 2160p

Shui8, 17 Jul 2019Pretty sure its cleverly gonna use the pixel binning method... morePixel binned to 25MP with an effective pixel size of 3µm? That would require a micro 4/3 sensor so would not fit into a mobile phone chassis.

No one is going to use the sensor in its 100 MP mode anyway. It makes sense to do the binning for the 48 MP sensors because some people may want the higher resolution but 100 MP is overkill. Professional cameras do not even have 100 MP sensors.

So great 25MP stills instead of the lower res 12MP ones.
I love it. 10x optical zoom is a welcome.

100mpix is only 2000pix in both directions bigger than 64mpix. Plausible in a year.

Tap, tap, tap... Enhance! Tap, tap, tap... Enhance!

It's like CSI level of zoom!

Anonymous, 17 Jul 2019In this case, it is the company that makes the sensor to blame.Companies make because customers want. Simple as it is.

Pretty sure its cleverly gonna use the pixel binning method. If the 100mp has 1/1.5" sensor with 1.5 micron pixel, pixel binned to 25mp resulting in 3.0 micron pixel size, i say that is decent enough.

Forget about 100mp, just use the 25mp though i prefer the 64mp one if its the same sensor & pixel size as i mentioned.

How about cameras with X-ray vision???

uselses quad bayer sensors 100mp will be just a 25mp . instead of going up on useless numbers improve the sensor exposures and increase the sensor size.

I think the smartphone industry isn't ready for 60MP sensors yet, let alone 100MP.
Heck, many implementations of 48MP is quite average still, and even the best ones are still not on their primes yet.
Perhaps we could first allow 48MP 1/2" sensors to mature enough and reach its limitations before we move on to the next generation.
We've pretty much mastered the 12MP 1/2.55" era, and now we're living in the 48MP 1/2" era, but I do think the sensor size must be enlarged further to 1/1.5" to allocate for larger individual pixels and maybe even higher stops of dynamic range.
We're also yet to have memory-stacked "true" 960fps super slow motion feature on these new 48MP monsters, so I would say that we've still got a long way to go before moving to the next generation.
