Anonymous, 05 Sep 2019Biggest obstacle to this device would the price of Xperia 1... moreExactly. If they want to introduce this Xperia 5 (compact & downgrade version of Xperia 1), they should introduce together with Xperia 1 Premium, in order to stay in the competition. Maybe put a bigger camera sensor, SD855+, bigger battery, ram, storage and introduce new features, to distinguish from the original 1.
Newer phones in the same year should always be better, improvement from its predecessor. These old Sony strategy has been proven fail in sales number already, yet they repeat the same thing over & over again.

Biggest obstacle to this device would the price of Xperia 1 which is already down to 750. So unless you really want small factor I'm not sure how do they expect someone to pony up more for less of the same. That's why Compact has always been announced with bigger brother. I'm aware 1 is Premium while 5 is regular XZ but still they fudged up the reveal order. Can you imagine XZ2 Compact debuting quarter later for the same money as XZ2?

S10 has same screen size, similar body size, same camera design, same stereo speaker, but has a head phone jack and larger battery.
and s10 only have 79 endurance rating. even if sony software is better, i won't expect large improvement. probably 82,83.
If this cost as the same as s10, i won't expect this to be successful at all.

geekacontra, 05 Sep 2019for some ones here: the 6.1" is really "in the palm of you... morecontinuation to my previous post, forgot to mention there: when kept in hand, Xperia 5 at 6.1" 21/9 it will feel pretty much like a 5" 16/9, similar width but with some 20% extra "real estate" visible screen... there is a downside: some 32mm extra height that could be cumbersome in some pockets

jamesschwarz987, 05 Sep 2019Ever finished math, dude? That's 5.5" with traditional 16:... moreGenuinely dont get the hate either + had to explain in several posts on how the aspect ratio distort the notion of screen size without there being a significant change in body footprint (sometimes can even include a width decrease compared to previous iterations). people see a number and jump to conclusion.

Whackcar, 05 Sep 2019Xperia's new naming scheme is all over the place. Xperia 1 ... moreIt is possible they follow the years count like "xperia 1 2020" for the next year for example, more like definitely.

for some ones here: the 6.1" is really "in the palm of your hand" as the display per se is some 61mm, thus some 10mm less than the "compact" 5.5" and some 1mm than a 5" display. and the... hand-ability is dictated mainly by the width and not by the height of a device. something else: the surface of a 6.1" 21/9 screen is some 3% smaller than a 5.5" 16/9 screen, thus, marginally..., the required power is even smaller. so: for all intends and purposes is more compact then a regular 5.5" compact.

Almost comparable to/as compact as Huawei P30 in terms of dimension

With a height of 158 mm it's not the compact I'm waiting for. Sony, please give me something with a height of 140 mm or less, wireless charging and thinner than the XZ2 Compact and I'll buy it.

Makimaki, 05 Sep 2019I understand why smaller screen dictates smaller battery. T... moreYes.. with more efficient SoC and faster charging process (not like the other "expensive phone" which include slow standard charger in the box).

6.1" shouldn't be called small, with such ratio it should be called narrow!

I understand why smaller screen dictates smaller battery. There is no compromise. You can have big phone and big battery, afterall there is place to put in bigger battery. Smaller screen and bigger battey then dictates thickness and heat dissipation, so which means whole arrangement can be different. Thick phones can be "ugly" according to current market. 3140mah can be enough these days.

Raky, 05 Sep 2019Aaaaaa... I could scream now.
I was reading this article a... more6.1" 21:9 is smaller than 5.7" 16:9 .
And it is FHD.
It will easily score more than 82h on gsma test.

Yee, 05 Sep 20196.1" = compact ;)
I remember when I bought LG G2 with 5.... moreEver finished math, dude?
That's 5.5" with traditional 16:9, means wider but shorter, compared to this 6.1" but with 21:9 screen ratio.
Also, LG G2 has 5.2" screen, it's easy as checking its specs on here. The one that has 5.5" screen is LG G3. That phone has 74.6mm wide, the Xperia 5 has narrower 68mm wide, means easier to held by hand, and it almost as compact as say, the 4.7" Xperia XZ1 Compact (65mm width) for example.
I don't get the hate that Sony always got. It's harder to find a phone at this compact with flagship spec at these days.
