Nokia 9 PureView's unique penta-camera gets low score from DxOMark

06 September 2019
It barely beats the Nokia 8 Sirocco in the overall score and actually got a lower video score. The PureView failed to top the 3-year old iPhone 7.

That's even higher than I expected. Those 5 camera sensors are the old IMX386, all of which without OIS.

Big surprise. Surely the better avenue would be one camera with a big sensor like the 808 and 1020? Surely is it that risky to put in a bespoke camera module that they prefer to use existing tech in a gimmicky fashion?

Just install the Google camera form the internet and you will see what this phone is capable of. I do that to my Nokia 8 sirocco and the result is unbelievable more better comparatively to stock camera app that comes pre installed. Do what I m saying and you will thank me! Have a nice day to everybody!

Their individual DxO scores totally make sense though. Horrible sharpening and clarity boost, inconsistent bokeh rendering, tons of artifacts, unacceptable low light image quality and no ability to zoom losslessly at all. I'm still surprised that this thing managed to get only 6 points lower than Xperia 1, which comes with its own set of issues but still outputs far more usable results than Nokia 9 as far as I can tell.
IMO Nokia 9's RAW capability is also horribly overrated - as soon as it came out in my country I had a chance to test it out in the store alongside iPhone XS and Galaxy Note 10, and the difference was staggering - Not only Nokia 9 completely blew up the blue neon lights inside the store and turned them white, I could not even recover the blown highlights even after editing its RAW file using Lightroom Mobile, with highlights being clipped in a really bizarre way. iPhone XS and Note 10 managed to retain colors in those lights perfectly. Bokeh mode was also underwhelming as the edge detection was rather wonky, not to mention that it can only shoot photos in 27mm equivalent focal length that is unsuitable for regular portrait shots. And video recording? Just forget about it.
So yeah, I think the score of 85 is perfectly justified.. Nokia is now paying a price for completely skimping out on JPEG processing.

I miss phones like Nokia N8, for example.

Otherwise, when HMD release Nokia 9.1 Pureview ????

that phone is not designed for " JPEG " photography, it's really that simple.

Whackcar, 06 Sep 2019Accurate enough this time. HMD fans will say otherwise, but... moreHMD fans just can't accept the fact that the real Nokia phone manufacturer is no more, and the current Nokia phones are just similar in logo only, but not the tech inside.

We all know that software processing in Nokia 9 is really bad, and that shows in DXO Mark scores.
If you know a little about photo editing and can spare some time editing raw files from Nokia 9, then the images turn out way above the smartphone realm. No smartphone camera can do in terms of raw images what Nokia 9 can.
Nokia 9 is just not made for the average smartphone consumer.

I doesn't matter if Dx0Mark is or not paid. This Puremediocre cameras with UNKNOWN chinese sensors already has demostrated how bad is in its alleged Pureview... Nothing good like in the old true Nokias (not the crap from HMD). Bad software, slow Light chipset and/or phone hardware to acomplish its job. Really bad recording video and depressive low light performance.

Forget the DxOMark, there are plenty of reviews out there with equal results, including gsmarena, that shows all the flaws this phone has. Use Dx0Mark as a target to excuse the poor performace of the phone in its cameras does not hide the reality.

I may be mistaken, but i think apple had first started using Dxomark score in their launch event, A test standard invented to make a phone camera score higher then other will always favour certain proprietary/patented algorithms and colour science.

Nokia phones have always score lower on Dxomark. May be they are just bad, oorr they may use more softer saturation or different colour profile.
A food for thought, May be Nokia/HMD tune their colours for Nordic/European skyline and snow. Dxomark may have a bias towards colours under California sun/ USA skyline.

So many cameras for so much disappointment...

The thing is if you know what to do, this can take the best photos from a mobile and if you don't know what to do it can be absolute garbage.

Just download saw DNGs and see for yourself. The highlight / shadow recovery is almost as good as m43/ 1 in cameras. Resolved details are also comparable to actual cameras

They did NOT pay DXOmark as Samsung and Apple did.
                                    and that is the result.
