iOS 13.1 to bring CPU throttling feature to iPhone XR and XS

20 September 2019
The feature is meant to prevent random shutdowns on aging batteries.

acemang, 21 Sep 2019why talking about quality and smartphones in same sentence?... moreLook it's obvious you have no valid argument. Instead of the current, perfectly good solution of having the headphone jack available to who wants it, you'd want me to buy a new, jack-less phone and a separate portable audio player and you'd want me to carry both at the same time, and eventually when I get I call, unplugging the audio player, switching to Wireless mode on the headphones, pair it to my phone and answering the call, and then repeat in reverse order to get back to music. This is dumb, slow and clunky.

I'm putting an end to this argument. There are no advantages to not having the headphone jack, as all the "advantages" of wireless are available too when the jack is available but not used.

Good phones have excellent audio output. That's a fact. Not bad, cheap phones. Good, pricey flagships. Don't believe me? Don't. But check GSMArena reviews that say so.

People who complain about unnecessary headphone jack absence are the ones who's spent a lot of money on expensive headphones. I have one pair of wired on-ear Audeze and a pair of in-ear Sennheiser. I will most likely look for something other than Samsung for my next upgrade, despite being a Galaxy S and Note user since the first Galaxy S.
The people who listen to music with bundled earphones couldn't care less.

Anonymous, 21 Sep 2019Alright, grandpa. Speak for yourself and let others evolve.... moreIf being modern is being foolish and be willing to settle for newer and inferior tech, then I'm proud of being old despite being in my twenties.

And, WiFi uses much more power and has acceptable, 2ms latency, all while allowing WiGig speeds and beyond. BT for input devices is sufficient, as the lower bitrate required allows for acceptale latency too. Oops, looks like the 20 years old grandpapa is more tech-litterate than you.

Evolving is the opposite of regressing. Yikes, I didn't realize how being modern means ignoring the meaning of words too.

Let the port exist for those who value quality and efficiency. You can still enjoy mediocre sound via Bluetooth if you want. My Note9 supports AptX and LDAC, yet it has a headphone jack.

Everyone is moving away from wires, clutter, tangles, etc. to all kinds of wireless technologies, yet you want to stay wired. Good for you!

Meanwhile, the rest of us will be in 2020 soon, while you still prefer the 1920's.

Guess you don't like wifi either, 'cause a wired connection has lower latency and higher transfer rates, right? Bluetooth keyboards and mice are the worst, right?

And why iPhone 11s can't use this feature so customers can have longer battery life and lifespan. Mobile phones this day are so powerful than application can use anyway.

Why not show the toggle even if the battery is still at its best?

The latency, reduced battery usage on both devices, the inconvenience having to charge two devices or not being able to charge and listen simultaneously is seriously underrated. Wireless audio is really for the connivence of well, not having wires, it's still a big plus but nothing more.

I disagree on Hi-Res though. Audio engineers years ago have already determined Redbook/CD quality audio is more than enough for human hearing and higher bitrate means nothing if the audio track wasn't recorded/mastered well in the first place. You cannot hear any difference between 16-bit/48kHz and 24-bit/96kHz it's misleading marketing jargon.

Well, the way manufacturers are continuously slimming down their devices whilst cramming in more hardware/features, phones today do not have excellent audio output. Good enough yes, excellent not really. If you want to get the best out of your wired gear, you still need a separate dac/amp or dedicated audio player, there's a reason why all of them are still thick bulky devices.

One of the tests done yesterday showed clearly how the iPhone 11 slow its A13 a lot compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Sure that the heat dissipation is a lot worse and/or more it's done on purpose. The results in the benchmark were dramatically different in the SoC performance between both iPhones having the same SoC. That big difference doesn't happen between Android phones with the same SoC, even if the price is a lot different .

I could get the best wireless headphones if I wanted to. In fact, those are excellent wireless headphones. Yet I always use it wired. I'm not buying a jack-less phone. What's the advantages of buying one? Uh... nothing. There's nothing you can do without that you can't do with. On the contrary, you can do more with than without. Examples include 0 latency audio, much much higher bitrate so higher quality, reduced battery usage on both devices, convenience of not having to charge two devices, or you know, forgetting to do so and having to wait for the headphones to charge...

If I have to have a 100mAh smaller battery to have a headphone jack, then go ahead because the energy savings of using wired instead of Bluetooth are higher than 100mAh. And it doesn't help with IP either. Sammy had no problem whatsoever to make the S5, S7, S8, S9, S10, N7, N8 or N9 waterproof. And when you look at how packed the Note9 is, that's really not a valid point.

I'm not buying another audio player just for this. Good phones have excellent audio output and support for HiRes audio. There's thus no need for something else.
