Anonymous, 24 Sep 2019Sharp sells out of Japan.
Does not matter if they barel... moreThey did it as a proof of concept for their customers (Xiaomi being one of them) to adopt into their phones. Then Xiaomi did just that, use Sharp's panel in their device - only in a better designed unit of course as it was meant for consumers and most consumers prefer refined design over industrial type.
Sharp supplied about 75% of the panels for the Mi Mix, AU Optronics supplied the rest.

Marco M, 24 Sep 2019Trying to make Sharp seem relevant to the smarphone industr... moreSharp sells out of Japan.
Does not matter if they barely sell more than 3 million phones per year.
They created the design , Xiaomi copied it after Sharp had 3 phones with only bottom bezel.
Xperia ZQ/ZL had selfie cam inside bottom bezel in 2013.

while apple and samsung and other western companies make sure they make money at as little investment in innovation as possible, china will lead in technology development in less than a decade.

Anonymous, 24 Sep 2019I dont see massive difference between them, plus Sharp does... moreTrying to make Sharp seem relevant to the smarphone industry as anything other than what they actually are, a sub-supplier of parts, is futile. They only operate in Japan essentially.
Their tri-bezelless devices was nothing more than to show their customers (other smartphone manufacturers) what was possible with their new display type. Then Xiaomi went and made it viral and re-shaped the smartphone landscape.
Yes, they did so with a Sharp LCD panel, but it was still Xiaomi that set this trend on fire.

Marco M, 24 Sep 2019Except unlike the tiny, low-end budget Sharp phone with mas... moreI dont see massive difference between them, plus Sharp doesnt only released low-end budget aquos, they also released the high end version. At that time, there was a lot of people seeing Mi mix as copycat from Sharp, if u dont believe it, just check people comments there. No matter what you said, people will consider Mi Mix as copycat from Sharp and they dont see massive difference like you said

AnonD-558092, 24 Sep 2019You have the wrong Aquos in mind...
https://www.gsmarena.c... moreIndeed I did, I was thinking of the Aquos Crystal, because that one I had both heard of and seen. This one I've never seen before, talk about a massive fail on Sharp's part :-)

And although not as bad as their previous one on the bottom bezel/chin, it's still very industrial in it's design language and the top and side bezels have grown considerably.

If the display is AMOLED, well that's not much of an achievement. Since the Note Edge we had curved displays. It's not hard to just continue the display beyond the frame and into the back...
The real question is: why? This thing is more shatter-prone than anything else on the market (tied with Mate X) since there is no frame to absorb the shocks.

I'm glad they try a new thing. Technologies packed in this device are impressive. However, IMO, saying it or any foldable device has over 100% screen to body ratio is a little bit misleading and unnecessary. I believe the ratio should told us, consumers, how thin phone bezel is not the ratio of all usable screen. For instance, if you calculated the ratio xiaomi way, a foldable phone with 50% screen to FRONT BODY ratio will have 100% ratio same as normal phone with no bezel at all. Again, I am not bashing the device. I feel that the mix alpha is great enough and there is no need to boast the screen to body ratio.
