Although, I think Apple limited the iPhone's functionality by locking it down, it is not really appropriate to compare it to N-series handsets.

Apple's target market has been non-smartphone users. Its philosophy is easily proving itself out in the US and in Europe. Non-smartphone users are switching networks and stumbling over themselves to get an iPhone. ( http://www.moconews.net/entry/419-o2-expects-to-sell-200k-iphones-by-jan-big-data-users-despite-2g-networ/ )

Nokia, SE, Samsung, HTC etc. fanboys can complain these millions of users are just ignorant and are being taken in by marketing. But hey, they aren't uber cellphone geeks instead in the latest gadget. They want one device that they can talk, surf, listen to music on, and one that will last more than a year or two. Show me another device on the market that does all this for the average "dumbphone" user with such ease. The N-Series by Nokia, the P-series by SE, RIM Blackberries, etc are all too sophisticated and expensive for the average user. And regular dumbphones are equally difficult to use. Try surfing the net on a dumbphone, or organizing a music playlist. I like cellphones (have an SE K790a) and I find these tasks tedious. I can't imagine most people having patience for this stuff on a "dumb" mobile.

And then there's the price. At USD 400 for the 8GB iPhone, given the feature set it comes with, it is well worth the price. Sure the N95 does way more, but it also runs for nearly USD 600. Another big plus, is the plan deals that Apple negotiates with the carriers. Data rates are well discounted thanks to Apple's negotiating power. I would consider getting an iPhone just to access its rate plans.

Given Apple's approach to not just marketing the iphone but actually facilitating its use (by negotiating good plans, keep the iPhone's price reasonable, providing access to itunes music store), its understandable why the iphone is doing well. And all signs are pointing to much more upgraded 3G version in 2008. I would say the other OEM's truly have to something to be worried about in the new year.

Iphone = crap. I was hyped about the Iphone and when I actually got to play with it, it was ok, but it had no 3G, in order to install other apps you have to use a hacked app installer, and it's pretty much subpar in terms of function compared with today's smart/pocket pc phones.

If you need a phone to "be cool" then I think need something alot st

Look guys, so much for people saying that the iPhone is being overhyped. If ur comparing feature to feature with phones from Nokia etc, it cant compare and all these specs are only technical details that look good on paper. The ease of utilising the iPhone is what makes it so powerful. Ive used the iPhone and I can easily say no manufacturer on the planet makes a phone that simple to use.

We are getting comments from people saying a Nokia 12XX can do the multiple SMS job etc. We aint comparing standard phone firmwares built into phones. The iPhone is using a Mac OSX interface here, naturally any major manufacturer here would put in improvements over its software step by step.

So what about motion sensors when u tilt the phone? How about the SMS messages stored in the form of " Conversations " ? Why didnt Nokia, Samsung or others think of implementing that in their phones? Why do they rush to update their phones with such features after they've seen what the iPhone can do? Doesnt that make them dummies too?

And if the iPhone is overhyped and does not pose a threat, Why Do You Think companies like Nokia and other rivals take its presence in the market so seriously? Are they stupid enough as well like the commonfolk to fall for an overhyped trick? For just a lil' 2 Megapixel iPhone, u would need a Behemoth of a phone from Nokia like the N95 8GB with all its features for Nokia to safely say ' Hey I beat Apple to that! '

So, what if Apple came up with something more powerful when it has gained more experience from the market? Instead of dissing the iPhone, i think we should thank them instead becos they are the ones who made these other complacent companies sit up and churn out better phones for us out there.

If you need a phone to "be cool" then I think need something alot stronger to fix those self-esteem issues. We need functionality, flexibility, and functionality.

I shrugged the Iphone away and went with a HTC Touch Cruise and an Ipod Touch.

The phone looks way too childish, like kids toy. Thous icons, design - lol. Motorola has better then. Look at LG Viewty and Prada, they look much better, has nice themes. If applied black theme it looks like business man tool.

Nokia so do have peple improving the software. It was only a month ago we found that its poosible to use motion control with the n95. imo upgrading to motion control is more impressive than multiple smsm haha.

The phone may be a crappy one as compared to the nokia phones but the fact is it is designed considering the american comsumer and the sales more than justify that. The phone wont sell in japan and parts of europe simply because even if the touch screen interface is attractive still it hasnt got the power that is needed from a phone.

OMG the ability to send texts to multiple persons! WOW that is so advanced. Who knew Apple would be the first to implement such technology. You know what is going to happen - Apple is being hyped up so much by the media - so when they fall it's going to be so much farther to down.

1.1.3 is going to be another joke. In the first place, this device has been overrated and overpriced. Re-inventing the wheel has been always in history proven itself.

I mean,it's so wonderful in its simplicity. That touchscreen, the interface, the iPod function. The prince is due to the high investment in developing technology, and will drop in the next year.Last but not least, think of the target users of this device, teenagers, who do not care about business features but about being cool and "multi-media"

After reviewing and considering, i realize that i-phone is really a crap, it only has a good display and inteface. But we have a lot of problem in term of firmware. I-phone lack some very important function, ex. sms, mms, bluetooth.... which were applied for other normal product. I dont know what Apple think about it, or they want upgrade all functions in the furture day, when i-phone was released, i just wanted to buy it, but now, i think it only for viewing, not for using.

the $20 Nokia 1208 can do that ! and so could the first Nokia that I had way back in 1996! freaking 12 years AGO!

as far as i know yours N95 software is and will be the same since you buy it till you throw it to the bin, the iPhone have a team of apple improbing the software day after day, creating new ways to expand the life and resources of your phone, witch it means if in not too long a new way to comunicate thru your phone appears in next months you'll gonna have to buy a new one, while the iPhone will automatically sort it for you, here is the advantage. And for the people that said nokia do the same... just a question: what can happen when you flash the firmware in your nokia, S/E or any else? easy not covered by warranty.
Therefore think who spend the money better....

The Features highlighted in iPhone's latest firmware update are the ones that were available on first generation S60 Phones, like Moving Icons is such a big thing?

I am really surprised looking at the way Apple is highlighting this feature!

N95, N82 Rocks in this aspect (except for the Touch Interface) they are way beyond iPhone in terms of pure functionality.

More Over, iPhone's are not soled in Unlocked version, we in Europe can easily get Unlocked N82 and N95's !...

Why do we even need to compare iPhone with N Series Phones? The comparison (functionality wise) iPhone is as good as a Series 20 / 30 Phone.... that of course after the latest firmware update. I mean, come on, one cant select delete multiple messages at once... that's silly...

hum i think I’ll stick with my N95-8gb.
I actually bought an iphone and then exchanged it for a new one, and a gain and then i got the Nokia. Third time is the charm.
And to the Average-user guy just one thing.
People that nitpick at perfect phones are the ones that push companies to build better phones, unlike somebody who is satisfied with any old crap that’s put into their hand. And apple seems to be full of those lame users because they just came out with multi sms, I mean c'mon I thought that is such ancient technology that it is automatically included in a phone. so have fun sending texts to all your friends at once but I think I’d rather control Mars Rovers with my n95 cuz it sure can do that all you need is some kid in Africa to write the program. And off you go launching nukes, texting, talking, listening to music oh and lets not forget taking pix AND video all at the same time.
