Weekly poll: Is Motorola Razr a folding phone done right?

17 November 2019
The third foldable phone is not following the formula of the other two.

Sort by:

A lot of people complain about the specs not being on par of a flagship phone, and while it is right, you have to understand that this phone acomplishes something no other phone has, it can fold full flat.

I think that complaining about the specs not being on par is like complaining a Corvette cant go where a 4x4 can. They are completely different cars, with completely different purposes.

Same with the Razer, its flagship not because of its specs but because what it accomplishes.

Even tho, I cant afford it lol.

Why'd they have the screw up the design by adding a fingerprint scanner?

Its a best folding phone ever created.
Um maybe but for me its the best looking phone of 2019.
When comes to beauty factor this is a very easy winner and thats the fact.
Maybe it dont have the best possible specs but still its a great phone.
2510 mAh is small but when folded is also small and a 15W charger can tp up 2510 mAh really fast so no worries.

Love the design, but the main camera is a big disappointment.

This is the folding phone I have been waiting for, but I never find any reason worth spending more than $300 (with contract) for a phone... YES, It's done right, but NO, I'm not paying for it...

The design is a gem, but there's a huge usability fail: try putting a bump below the lower edge of your smartphone display and see if you can still easily access the lower part of the display.

If only i could afford to spend $1500.. :(

OK, I'm a specs guy. I would not buy it for even 300$. But I have to admit, it looks cool as... You now. Very cool!

gimm, 18 Nov 2019lol so, thinking smart is the same as being hater? If you're so smart you'll understand why the price is this high, yet 2100$ cheaper than the Mate X.

                      nope:
                      - bulky chin
                      - small battery
                      - > $1000 price
if this priced around $500, it will be more reasonable

Although I doubt it will ever hit the shelves in NZ but if it does I'll surely buy it. I understand it shouldn't have exceeded the price of tag US$999 but I'll just buy it to support the company. I hope in the coming years othe companies can make similar phones with some Improvements and lower pricer tag.

The voting options are just irrelevant!!!
I mean, I would like to say No to this phone, but certainly not with those reasons GSMArena mentioned.

I don't really mind the screen size of the phone, nor the foldable form factor of the it. What I do really mind, is the huge chin it has .... would be hard to even reach for that keyboard in portrait mode, on a daily/routine usage... especially when pulling up a swipe from bottom of the screen, when looking at Android is tending towards ios-like gestures for home, multi-tasking!!

people keep complaining about the chin on this phone; please realize that it is from the original razr v3. the reason for this phone is to sort of reincarnate the razr flip phone series' design; this phone is to honor that design, thus that chin. also, motorola used the chin to house some of the components like the speakers and the retracting mechanism for the screen itself to avoid the crease on the folded part. people are complaining that the chin will get in the way of reaching for the navigation buttons- android has moved to gesture navigation already.

then again people are complaining about the specs, especially the battery. the small battery is necessary so it can fit to the thin chasis, which unfolded is only 6.9 mm. then you say why not make it thicker then? again, this is to honor the original razr v3's design, so they couldn't make it any thicker than the original. the mid-range soc is also necessary because of that puny battery, otherwise having the sd855+ on it would have sucked the battery dead in merely a couple of hours. why not the sd730? that, i don't know because the 730 is indeed more power efficient than the 710. i guess the reason for that is at least the 710 is tried and tested and the 730 is, well, released this year.

i am not defending motorola here, rather just stating the obvious or what would constitute a common sense.

This phone is unique in everything, but the only minus is its price, if it cost two or three times cheaper, it would be disassembled with eyes closed, because at one time this phone was valued as top-end and the most advanced!

I will buy it for only one reason ...
hate the size of phones today.

In my opinion, this poll should have one more option which would be "if the money wasn't a problem for me, I would certainly buy it"

I mean... We can't really complain about the price too much can we? Whoever has the money to spend on this is financing the evolution of the tech. I can't spend, but would happily try it if I could. Even if the specs aren't that much, because who really needs computer-level specs in a cellphone?

I think it's cool and having a half-sized phone in the pocket is certainly a win. I've never been a fan of huge phones and I think that size is a good one.

Seems like a nice phone...but is a 1500 dollars folding phone better than a regular 400 dollars phone...i think not

The ONLY thing the 2019 Moto Razr gets right is the folding screen mechanism, which is almost perfect, to be fair. Everything else is far from acceptable.

Let's see what ALL the Razr gets wrong.
                                      1. Underspecced processor. Lower end of the mid ranger spectrum. Though since it has very poor cameras, it may not require a more refined processor.
                                      2. Single 16MP back camera with no ultra wide and no zoom.
                                      3. The front camera is a terrible 5MP left over from some 5 years ago smartphone. They probably don't even make that particular imaging sensor anymore.
                                      4. Battery is pretty small. The main screen is 6.2 inches, so it may not last a full day of heavy use.
                                      5. The tiny 2.7inch screen when the device is folded. Its pretty much unusable. You can't really see much on it. It's just a little larger than a smartwatch screen.
                                      6. The 21:9 aspect ratio seems impressive, except the facts that you will only be able to watch anything on the phone in landscape mode and only type on it in portrait mode. The phone is too narrow for anything except wide screen cinema.

The feature set makes it more like a $700 smartphone, and most of the demanding would be for the new 6.2inch folding main screen on the inside. Everything else is mediocre at best.

Even though the first smartphone was made in 1992 and we had touchscreen smartphones during the late-1990s thanks to ODM HTC at the time, the smartphone era didn't really begin until 2008 when the App Store opened. BlackBerry were the single most overrated devices in the early to mid-2000s. Big whoop! Email!

The smartphone era that really began in 2008 when App Store and Android were released basically eliminated the need of feature phones. The so-called dumb phones became irrelevant. Research In Motion were still tops in North America though mainly because the iPhone wasn't available to all the carriers yet and some BBs were far cheaper.

This foldable / dual display era which hasn't even begun yet will actually help Android dominate globally even further. If you want an iPhone, you're stuck with one form factor. If you use Android, you have a variety of different phone factors to choose from. Choice is wonderful. Something Apple doesn't really give us unless we're talking about color options.
