Samsung Galaxy S11 to have a 120 Hz display

20 November 2019
A hidden setting was found in the latest Beta build of One UI that suggests a future device with support for higher refresh rates.

At first I thought the Note 9 did have the option for 120Hz lol.
I thought it would be similar to Sony, where even the Xperia X from 2016 had the option for it.

Fun fact: XZ2 Premium's display is 144Hz, but software locked it to 60Hz due to incapacity of SD845 to render such refresh rate.

LOL, 21 Nov 2019I think the high refresh rates are nothing more than a gimm... moreYou can't really speak about something you haven't tried personally in real life.
Trying out a 120Hz display feels like the screen responds the soon you touch it. It's very lifelike and gives off the impression of a really smooth and fast-performing device.
Going from 120Hz back to 60Hz is a major downgrade in terms of experience. You could literally feel the sluggishness or choppiness of the screen. 60fps is smooth, but your perception of what is a "smooth" display drastically changes, and 60fps, interpreted by your brain after trying a 120Hz display, is no longer the "smooth" performance that you once thought it was.

If you're just watching usual 24-60fps videos, then you probably wouldn't notice the difference, but scrolling through the UI or a web page in full 120Hz is a huge game changer.
It's really something you would appreciate so much even if you didn't ask for it.

Not trying to change your mind, but I want you to try it out first before making a proper decision.
Of course videos of 120Hz displays on the internet won't be visible to you if you're watching on a 60Hz display, so you should definitely give it first a try!

There is everyone happy now? It has a 120hz display and battery life will be rubbish. I will be leaving it on 60hz or maybe 90hz. Knowing Samsung we have the choice.

Kangal, 21 Nov 2019120Hz is the optimal refresh rate because it: - cleanly x2... moreIn the PC world, yes.
But in the mobile world - higher screen refresh rate is completely useless.
        1. It's an additional power draw for UI, but stutters will still be visible.
        2. Only few games support higher refresh rates and most of the times the most powerful chipsets can't keep up with fps.

So it's basically another marketing tool to sell newest devices.

it sucks if you can`t have it at 90hz, nice balance between experience and battery

But many others do have the red tint issue-->

It does use a Samsung-made panel, but the specifications were given by Asus, so there is a very real possibility that Asus messed up somewhere.
Also, a low touch response + a good refresh rate does not equate to a good panel. For example, the 600 nits brightness, while adequate, is nowhere near Samsung's or Apple's nearly 850 nits of brightness (1200 nits under specific conditions). There are certain other areas where Asus lags behind, but those are not much of a dealbreaker for gamers and most users.

The red tint issue is very irritating though.

I think the high refresh rates are nothing more than a gimmick that drains battery life.

75Hz should be more than super smooth enough for a human eye.

              90Hz is already an overkill.

I would do a constant 75Hz refresh rate, no 'adaptive refresh rate' switching from 60Hz to 90Hz and vice versa.

Perhaps the phone makers should do an honest blind test using phones with different refresh rates, rather than cater to gimmicky trends on the market.

Great, this means we finally will be able to see a WQHD+ display running at 120Hz on a smartphone now! Given Samsung's excellent reputation on display quality I don't think they will mess things up like Google did with Pixel 4 as some people are speculating. Hopefully it dynamically scales refresh rate between 24 and 120Hz like Apple's ProMotion display for better power efficiency, unlike what OnePlus/Oppo/Google uses which only has two refresh rate options of 60Hz and 90Hz.

Damn, I think Samsung is serious this year.
                      They want their crown back.
Already planning on selling my S10.
If all the leaks and rumors are true, this is turning into a worthy buy. I just hope they improve on the looks and aesthetic part. Maybe take some inspiration from Huawei. That is the only part I dislike about S10

AnonD-558092, 21 Nov 2019XDA says that 90Hz panels currently used in phones are prev... moreYes, that seems to be a very strong reason Samsung did not use them this time. Possibly this time around they could not get the high refresh rate to work with the newer tech. I really hope that Samsung has ironed out all the differences and the newer panels have all the best possible properties+high refresh rate.

Luxor, 21 Nov 2019The 90Hz display on OnePlus is made by Samsung though. Yes, but in the reviews that I read thus far, Samsung's panels retain better sunlight legibility, colour accuracy, contrast ratio and peak brightness in Auto mode.

120Hz is the optimal refresh rate because it:
                                        - cleanly x2 of 60fps
                                        - dirty x2.4 (frame-skipping) of 50Hz
                                        - cleanly x4 of 30fps
                                        - cleanly x5 of 24fps

On top of that, it's "very smooth" like 144Hz panels, and a huge upgrade from 50-60Hz displays. The 90Hz displays don't seem that much more fluid than 60Hz, but 120Hz does. It makes more sense to treat 90Hz as a 60Hz, rather than treat 90Hz as a 120Hz... and that's what PC Gamers do anyway (either enhance graphics for 60fps, or optimise frame rate for +120fps).
