Flashback: Nokia N9 was ahead of everyone but went nowhere

08 December 2019
Nokia's Linux efforts faced internal and external pressure, but they did deliver this jewel - only for it to be quickly discontinued in favor of WP7.

I really wish Sailfish OS would take off and become a true android alternative. I tested it on Xperia XA2, it's good but not there yet unfortunately

lumia 1020 camera was slow because microsoft couldnt add support for quadcore

Also demanding games didnt run well on sd 400.

They really need to revive this design. Recent Nokia phones have been such a disappointment.

Joshy, 09 Dec 2019I don’t understand why they didn’t keep this going! It was ... moreThis happens because of Steven Elop - CEO of NOKIA for that time. He was the person, who made everything to convince all in NOKIA to go to Windows mobile, instead to continue MeeGo or Android.
That was planned by Microsoft, but didn't save their mobile division.
That happens when incapable people, like Balmer and Elop take the wheel.

If Nokia 808 is the epitome of smartphone camera, the N9 is the epitome of smartphone OS. I still remember the N9 true multitasking with 40+ open apps including 3D racing games (asphalt+nfs shift), switching between the 3d apps on the fly with no hiccup. All that on 1 core 1 Ghz 1 GB of ram. Imagine if we put the OS on today's octa-core 2.3Ghz 6GB ram hardware. And the gesture UI is simply the best implementation ever.

Both phones have not been surpassed to this day. Period

Incredible article, that phone was timeless and more elegant than most of Chinese today's phones.
It is really nice to see an article talking about it nowadays.
And the article of 808 Pureview was gold too :)

i was still working for customer care for one for the biggest mobile carrier in the usa then- i was called out by my manager because i spent a full hour talking with an enthusiast who, at that time, was using the n9. we had common admiration for meego and he actually made several homebrew apps and games for meego. i finally was able to get myself an n9 about three months after our initial conversation over the phone, and he sent me the apps and games he made.

this really is a good-looking phone, even by today's standards. if you compare it to other phones back then, this stands out.
