Samsung Apple LG are all sneaky and shady. They didn't get rid of the headphone jack because its outdated tech. They got rid of the jack to sell dongles, and bluetooth headphones.

I forgot to say.
Nokia 808 does downsampling. Not binning.
Exactly what's done by Sony Z series.
You get details of 38MP photos, but file has size of 5MP photos.
Quality is much higher than regular 5MP.

Theoretically, a 9-1 CFA could ensure details comparable with about 15-20MP from a smartphone sensor (with a 1.4 micron pitch size).

Man I was bashed for suggesting 9 to 1 binning when the first 108mp sensor was going to be announced

Whackcar, 16 Dec 2019I remember seeing some comment on a previous article about ... moreI suggested it should be 9:1, since bayer pattern in Quad Pixel on tiny sensors introduces a lot of false colour aliasing noise. The 9:1 pattern can get rid of this and have way sharper and better images. Also, low light should be significantly improved.
I am sure they will have a separate sensor for 4k, 6k or 8k shooting, since this sensor does Full Res at only 30fps, and having a ennea pixel sensor won't make any difference to the speed of the readout. Unless it crops into the frames to an 8MP region (of the ennea Pixel CFA) for 4k video.

Why using 108MP that outputs 27 or in this case 12 instead of native 27 or 12MP of same size?
Native 12MP 1/1.33" will surely have better low light skills, but these kind of sensors are made to boost DR by using different exposures.
I suspect Samsung will use 3 different exposures, while quadbayer/tetracell uses 2.
People should not be so hyped about pixel size. The newer technologies allow cameras with smaller pixels to have same low light performance of cameras with bigger pixels.
Otherwise we would not have FF with 60MP, while other near 100MP will show up in couple of years.
Two sensors of same pixel size but different sizes wont perform same when it comes to light grabbing.

I hope the binning is an option, so you can choice no binning, 4x or 9x.

The source doesn't say that the sensor combines the pixels. When you simply resize a 27 megapixel Bayer photo, it also behaves like a 12 megapixel sensor of the same size. The main difference between resizing and hardware pixel binning are very dark shadows and extreme darkness.

Whackcar, 16 Dec 2019I remember seeing some comment on a previous article about ... moreWe're mostly stuck in a sensor size spiral, not necessarily a resolution spiral. Native 12MP 1/1.7" sensors with software to match should've been the successors to the usual 12MP 1/2.3" or 1/2.55" sensors we've seen in nearly all flagship phones for the past 3 and a half years, not the IMX 586

YUKI93, 16 Dec 2019Making a native 12MP camera with native 2.4 micron pixel wo... moreSorry, I don't understand your point clearly. 108 individual pixels still use up space. We're talking about absolute sensor size here.
1/1.3" to be exact.
So whether you fit 12 or 108 Mpx in the same area will only impact the size of each individual photosite. But when you bin together pixels, you're not really creating "one" megapixel, just combining information of 9 pixels. Each of these 9 pixels is still separate with its own wiring, etc. so the signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range would still be impacted.
I'd rather just have ONE effective pixel at the size of 2.4um than 9-to-1 at 2.6um.
It just seems so unnecessarily complicated, what am I missing?
