Hardware is definitely the same, internal component design certainly not the best out there (Huawei doing it better by the way), build quality - nothing special (not any better than Huawei or Xiaomi), cameras - from good to mediocre etc. Sony must find something to really distinguish themselves from others like Huawei flagships with their camera flexibility and insane battery life or Google with incredible camera performance.

s-pen pusher, 15 Jan 2020i have thought about that as well, i mean that of improving... moreagreed, but it would require Sony Mobile to grow back its long lost spine and stop playing defense. Sony used to be the unquestioned masters of portable AV. a premium phone that lets you play audio respectably is an unexplored area and Sony may as well start experimenting more seriously.

Sales number tell you the whole story.
Even Xiaomi, Realme, OnePlus, Asus improving their marketshare.
While Sony is stuck in mud.

To my humble opinion, Sony is on the way out. They are just doing it slowly. Considering what they are doing for the last few years and how it sells around the world (actually, there are not many places left where you can buy Sony smartphones), I don't think that Sony makes any money from it hence no point to stay.

Sony isn't getting any new customers unless they drop the price.
You can't ask exorbitant price for Xperia flagships. Most people gonna stick to Huawei, Samsung and Apple.
Sony is in the same boat as LG and others. Nothing appealing enough over other flagships.
While HTC is clinging onto its life jacket.

Trump Fan 1980, 15 Jan 2020 Read that standby battery life was good on Sony's handsets..."standby battery life"- means when you are not using the phone. so the battery stamina that matters this much to you is when the phone is in standby? i can very well speak for most people that we prioritize battery stamina when we actually are using the phone- i.e. screen-on-time, and not when the phone is in standby. unfortunately, it is a fact that sony smartphones do lack battery stamina when actually using the phone.

Absolutely zero interest in anything Sony has to say unless it's to announce the return of a proper sub 5" Xperia Compact with a 3.5 headphone jack that doesn't need E.T.'s fingers to reach the top.

Son... morei have thought about that as well, i mean that of improving on their speakers. they have been applying on their smartphone displays features (or gimmicks?) from their bravia tv line, why not bring in features as well from their high power speaker systems? i have never used any home audio products since my childhood but sony branded ones. i collected vintage walkmans and discmans when i was a young kid, and at home my parents have had only those stackable hifi sytems from sony as well as home theater speaker systems from sony. they could very well employ things such as their x-bass, dsee, and clearaudio+.

I'm glad that Sony is bringing back the headphone jack. Sony has a multi-decade tradition of premium, portable devices with MAXIMUM function and amenity. recent Xperia phones lost that wisdom, I hope it returns to their product line.
they should make new design trends bend to their traditional philosophy of "maximum function". I don't mind minimal chins top n bottom if there's symmetrically matched, front firing stereo speakers. I don't mind extra thickness if there's extra battery, and maybe an acoustic resonance chamber or (please God) a mini subwoofer.
SONY, you can still redefine the smartphone market if you remember your strengths. don't copy the anti-consumer nonsense of Samsung, they're leveraging the entire Korean government in a way you cant count on from Tokyo.
