The 64MP tele camera of the Galaxy S20 is for 8K video, not 4-in-1 binning

29 January 2020
The Galaxy S20's 64MP tele will be used through cropping for pictures and 8K video.

Assuming this is YT's mandatory sharpening, I could only imagine that the original output would look even softer.
I understand that the iPhone couldn't output 720p, as a setting, I'm talking about how phones never make use of all the effective resolution of the output settings, for starters there's probably no full sensor readout, it's all binned and will be worse than, for example the RX series, most of which at least do full readout of a cropped area, IIRC.
I acknowledged that Samsung does more sharpening from the beginning, I'm just pointing out that the Mate30P outputs visibly very soft slomo, even with the presence of sharpening enough to exhibit a halo.

You can switch the frame rate between 120 and 240fps in the settings but the resolution is fixed at 1080p. As for the "sharpening" artifacts you mentioned, that could be caused by anything - on-device compression applied when the video is being recorded, Youtube video compression, frame interpolation artifacts, or just some general haziness & colour inaccuracy in edges due to low resolution. There *might* be minimum amount of sharpening applied to make the video look more appealing, but even then it's far from being disturbing unlike what Galaxy does to the footage, IMO.

Nick Tagataka, 01 Feb 2020"unless P30P was just an especially low reference point" E... moreThe iPhone's wasn't 1080P, but the Mate's was far further from 720P. Watching BDRips I know that good 720P is almost as sharp as 1080P of the same size, only distinguishable side by side, also better tonality but that's another issue.
On my screen it only looks acceptably sharp at 20% magnification, which since the video is 1920x960, means 192p, any larger and the haziness would show. Also I don't agree that there's no sharpening, looking at the treeline there are unnatural whitenings at the tips of the branches where they meet the sky, that almost form a line, which looks less natural than the iPhone's treeline. I believe that's still sharpening.

Anonymous, 01 Feb 2020Coz article is about s20 and you're the one running around ... moreAnother lie. I didn't say iPhone 11pro video will be better than S20.
The first comment about this was
Samsung should focus on Video using the fifth sensor instead of using it a macro one, so that it can match iphone video quality or outperforms it.
You are the one who was dragging it out of way. Said, iPhone isn't better at all. Then I had to give example with current Samsung Phone as S20 isn't out yet.
Anyway, some people doesn't understand good words, definitely not those who need to hide their name. I wish GSMARENA had published my last comment. That would be a nice reply for you.

            Anyway ,, Good Bye ghost.

                Exactly what I'm implying.

"However that footage was indeed soft at a glance, far softer than Apple's at least"
I see your point, though isn't that because he was comparing 1080p output from iPhone to 720p from Mate? Mate's footage lacks any sort of sharpening as well.

                "why don't you upload one?"
A good suggestion, but sorry. Last time when I was transferring retail Mi Note 10's RAW file onto my phone I got nearly kicked out of the store because the staff thought I was doing something fishy, and honestly I don't want to get into such a trouble again.

Surprisingly I can't find any such comparison(actually, why don't you upload one?) except Mr.whostheboss's who I don't really trust and did fail to provide distinguishing evidence in that section of his video anyway, in that the water droplets were too small in the frame and he didn't normalize the frame rate.
However that footage was indeed soft at a glance, far softer than Apple's at least(interestingly the FoV issue was negated in the foreground because the size of the weeds are the exact same in the frames of the two models), and I wouldn't call that sharp, as a video, as a smartphone output video. In terms of sharpening, while it's pretty clear Samsung added more sharpening, but compared to Apple it could be observed from the background tree line that Huawei still added more. I couldn't observe any sharpening artifacts from that sample from the iPhone.

Yeah, you compared S10 with P30 Pro, not Mate 30 Pro. Mate 30 Pro at 720p 1920fps mode doesn't interpolate frames, or even if it did it would still interpolate less frames which would naturally result in higher overall quality video. It also has better ISP to process each frame more efficiently. Moreover, since Mate relies on UWA camera with the regular Bayer sensor, the resolution should be higher and there should be less noise than whatever P30 Pro outputs with its main RYYB sensor as long as the lighting is sufficient (in fact the store where I tested the slow mo feature was a very well lit environment). You might want to test out the device and check the results yourself if the device is available in your country. Honestly, I can't really complain about its super slow mo video capability, apart from the fact that it's still way too short for me to consider to be usable in real life.

Nick Tagataka, 30 Jan 2020An easier way to evaluate would be taking 1080p 960fps and ... moreThat's assuming the max ISO really is the native max ISO, not max ISO with different restrictions or extensions(digital amplification above the CMOS level) that could vary with video settings, which is hard to rule out. Moreover, as I repeatedly noted before, Huawei's ISO numbers are unreliable.
I don't know how you did that comparison(the sensor size difference will mask readout issues if you don't have enough light) but a side by side comparison between P30P's and S10's 720p@960fps(the former's entirely fake of course) a friend provided showed that P30P's footage was not only interpolated but had far worse image quality, frame by frame. The 720p I mentioned was obviously by smartphone slo-mo standards, not Arri 720p. No smartphone outputs 720p with an effective resolution of 720p.
