The 64MP tele camera of the Galaxy S20 is for 8K video, not 4-in-1 binning

29 January 2020

So for the brutal rip-off price of $1400, you're not even getting actual optical zoom, but only fake zoom that's done by cropping?
Shame on you, Samsung, for trying to sell ridiculous sub-par technology at such brutal rip-off prices!

Yet you will keep complaining about this in 2020.

Subpar build quality? Xiaomi were one of the first manufacturers to provide sturdy metal phones at 200 dollars. They offer exceptional build quality at low price. Whereas manufacturers like Samsung give plastic build in low end segment.

You just hate all Xiaomi products.
Don't forget that Realme exists today because it was launched to compete with Redmi (from Xiaomi)

To me 64MP sounds like a lot of wasted pixels if it will come with a traditional Bayer CFA, a 32MP sensor would be more balanced and fit to the job.

An identically sized 32MP sensor coupled with clever super-res multi frame image processing can produce an image that is just as much as detailed as 64MP sensor, while being benefited from increased light sensitivity of individual pixels. 0.8µm is pretty damn tiny, and as you already have noticed, it requires "perfect lighting conditions" in order to produce relatively noise free image.

Most of the sensors used for telephoto lens have at least 1 micron pixel size, while current high MP count sensors have 0.8 micron pixel size. Smaller pixels mean less light and more noise.

Does that mean the S20 won't have optical zoom? I mean if it'll be cropping using 64MP sensor, it's just digital zoom.

In the center of the frame a smartphone lens could be able to capture that much detail. Even if the fnumber is 3.0, the diffraction wouldn't be very noticeable in a crop.
For nearly lossless zoom the megapixel count is the most important thing. In perfect light conditions a 12.2 megapixel crop of the 64 megapixel sensor would have a similar noise performance as Huawei's 80mm camera.

This makes sense. Currently no manufacturer has been able to capture many details with Quad Bayer sensors and there are often ugly artifacts. A 64 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor in the high resolution mode would be more comparable to a ≈20 megapixel Bayer sensor with artifacts.

Honestly, I'm not quite sure how well this might work out. Indeed, having native 64MP Bayer sensor would be great for cropping, but it also means the dynamic range could be very limited and the noise could get unacceptably intrusive at higher ISO settings, which would most likely make its 8K video recording feature pretty much unusable in less than ideal lighting conditions. I would rather have 32MP telephoto lens with double the pixel area, I mean like, a smartphone lens cannot fully resolve 64MP resolution anyway.
