Motorola to follow Siemens and Philips?

You got it right. The used-to-be number 1 cell phone manufacturer Motorola is considering selling its mobile phone division. It is not sure yet if a deal will go...

Motorola are once again about to release a phone which they think will sell, yet has failure written all over it. The ROKR E8 is a phone with a small display so if you like mobile games its a no no, so that rules out all the kids (a large proportion of new phone buyers).
It is a camera but with only 2 Mega pixels its not much of a camera when Nokia and SonyEricsson make phones with 5 Mega pixels, so we are left with a music player but I don't think many people would rush out for an overpriced MP3/MP4 player, assuming that motorola have added the functions for video. On the plus side it is a nice looking music player. I loved Motorola's once but now have a SonyEricsson, as Motorola just don't compete, and buying a name just doesn't work any more.

To anonymous: Motorola makes (or at least used to make) processors, too. The 68k family is made by them, and equips devices such as the high-end line of Texas Instruments calculators.

Well... if this were to happen, lets just hope that another cell phone company we all love (or at least most of us) will buy Motorola. If the selling goes through, I seriously want to see LG buying Motorola.

Very sad. Motorola is sinking like the oder giant, Siemens (already dead)... Unfortunatelly we will be forced to accept more of the supraevaluated and expensives Nokia mobiles.

Unbelivable that Motorola has slept through the last two - three years, haven`t come up with much after the Razr series.... can thank themselves for having the problems they now have to face !!
Think it`s sad, because we are soon left with very few manufactures, which again means less options.. :-(

If moto goes then no more of the ROKR seris and buyers will be forced to buy walkmen. I hate walkmen there are too restricted and the moto OS JUIX is the best OS out there modding it is soo easy. I hope moto doesm't sell =(

I had a V600 n V3 before I switch back to Nokia. Good reception on the RAZR, but both gave me probs as the outer display would light up randomly. Moto always made the nicest phones esp flip, but i got bored of them fast with crappy UI that doesnt tell what time were my missed calls. Maybe they can bounce back like Nintendo with the Wii. Thin is no longer in. Touchscreen is the new fad. Apple take notes if your MacBook Air is a dud. Soon we'll have phones as thin as paper.

it will be bad, if moto will disapear.
less competitors on the market is a bad things for us, the consumers.

Do you realize if Moto dies the US market will be a complete total battleground between Nokia and Samsung, if nokia wins the usa market i bet it will have more than 50-55% of the market.

It's about time. People in the industry saw the sliding quality of their handsets and knew this was coming. The issue with such a large, old, entrenched corporation like Motorola is that their policies and ideals are stagnant. When you do something one way for 5 years, it's hard to change that. They need a shake-up and they need to start producing QUALITY phones. I would happily sell them again if I didn't get such a high return rate (over 50% for many models).

Im glad they going tru hard time, i hate the RAZR brand everyone wants one is annoying. too bad for the ppl that work for moto.. the last 3 years they have done nothing but make the same boring phones, RAZR 2 is the killer of the company. i meamn how thin can you make a phone this days? lol sure moto made it thiner but theyalso made it wider and longer so that thing looks huge when is flip open.. the buttom line is that moto never did came up with good phones only the RAZR pull tru do to is unique design, ppl now wants someting unique different from your buddys. so moto change everyting and start fresh and new. SE rocks!

Business is business...not family...which is why you dont do business with family...the only loyalties are to that which makes you $$$. Moto's cell phone division is sucking said $$$ away from the company so they have to make a cost benifit analysis...whether the current and continuing loss of money is worth the potential bounce back of the division. Looks like they decided it wasnt.

The problem with Motorola is their marketing. I have had Motorola phones in my pockets earlier, and they were great. Now, in North Europe, Nokia has the lead and we all know that. A couple of months ago, Motorola fired their whole marketing division in Scandinavia. Their websites here in Europe are also very outdated with phones from back in 2003. And in Finland, it's really hard to eaven buy a Motorola. The resellers list their phones as "coming soon" for YEARS, and then they delete them from their lists. Motorola need to make some new phones (not only cheap phones for the worlds poor areas) with OVER 2 megapixel cameras, new design and fix their marketing problems. Other companies have had a lot bigger problems than that, and they haven't fired their marketing divisions and sold away everything. So, Moto, don't give up!

Design over function doesnt last long in this business. Fads change. At least Apple made a nice UI, but even the look of the iPhone will get old like Razr if it doesnt update with features. Heavy users help drive the industry. Not teenage fashionistas who use parents' money for the bill. U could only milk the Razr's design for so long before it gets boring n uncool.

It really is a shame that Motorola is going through hard times. I really wouldn't want anything bad to happen to this company because Motorola is an icon in the mobile phone business. My first mobile phone was a Motorola and I can remember them always coming up with bold designs that were sometimes years ahead of their competition(ex. Star-Tac and, generally, a lot of the V-phones). The truth is that, right now, nobody can compete with Nokia (btw, I am NOT a Nokia fan). They got it all: design, technology, marketing and a very wide variety of phones to choose from. Samsung has proven just how far one can go on design and user-friendliness alone because, in my opinion, as far as functionality, their phones are pretty weak (short battery life, not to mention the fact that a lot of their phones display the "low signal" warning way too often). It really is a very tough market and I hope Motorola manages to do something because I'd hate to see a name that's synonymous with mobile telecommunication disappear. :-(
