Weekly poll: the Huawei P40 phones are so good, but can you love them with no GMS on board?

29 March 2020
Huawei has already replaced much of the Google ecosystem and is offering camera hardware that is (currently) unrivaled. Is that enough?

With the Amazon app store, it's got good maps (eg Osmand+), and good enough alternatives for everything else i need. I have had Amazon Fire tablets since the first Kindle Fire came out; I got a Fire Phone to play with when the were going for "fire sale" prices; to me, this is an Amazon phone done right, without problematic aspects of Amazon involvement. But ultimately, it is the camera features and that make this a first-choice, not just an appealing contender (from among phones with dual frequency, L1 + L5 dual band, GNSS -- an absolute must-have).

Nick Tagataka, 29 Mar 2020So far I haven't seen any videos of showing P40 Pro droppin... moreThey lowered bitrate so Kirin can keep up.

Less than 15cm, just like phones from 2014.

"The Huawei P40 costs €800, saving you €200 compared to the Pro. But is it worth it? You lose the 90Hz refresh rate, the charging is parred back too - 22.5W wired (down from 40W on the Pro) and no wireless (unless you buy a case). Oh, and no IP68 water proofing on this one."

The P40 is the best in term of size for me, but without IP68 and 90Hz refresh rate, I will rather buy a Pixel 4 or an S10e. HMS is not a problem for me.

The best one with GMS or the best one. Not to forget HMS works with every brand for now, as opposed to GMS. Or maybe we need some sort of GlobalMS to make it work forever?
The only option is for every country going separate ways, wouldn't want that.

before Google Services, every phone brand has its own app store (even i remember those cool wallpapers and ringtones sotres, most of them were free), every 3g/wifi capable phone has an email app which lets you use whatever email service you wanted to use, if maps were not available you could simply download an app. i don't see why people is going crazy because of absence of Google Services on Huawei.
My concern about these phones are huge prices, but that's another story

Dometalican, 29 Mar 2020Not adding a bigger battery despite the higher refresh rate... moreSamsung with higher refresh rate and larger battery has terrible battery life for a flagship. Can't say the same for Huaweis. Mono speaker because they used high tech screen vibration earpiece.

I personally don't use the speaker on my phone much. I listen to music and watch youtube using my earphones while I'm commuting. When I'm at home, there's the TV, desktop and iPad.

No way, I wouldnt buy it without Google.

there should've been another option, which is "no. not without GMS" since the only things stopping me from getting the P40 Pro or P40 Pro+ are the UI and the lack of GMS and that's it.

Google apps upto some extent are do-able. If you are buying a 1000$ smartphone you should have knowledge to do that. This is enough for me to move over Huawei if given a chance. Samsung has lost his crown after becoming second generation after another.

Its a good phone. If you want google on it you can simply install GMS. It'll only take less than 5 mins to do that

Not adding a bigger battery despite the higher refresh rate and 5G, no Stereo Speakers, no headphone jack, and a display that's super fragile and obtrusive (if you want face ID, bezels or pop-up cam would've been better). No thanks. 2020 = the year of disappointment for phones so far.

the missing google isn't the problem so long as you can sideload. the problem comes when nasty chinese tat starts putting in their alternatives with it's more nefarious data collecting and snooping posibilities. huawei and all it's sub companies are nasty and never a good option. also their launcher stinks i hate the interface they provide it's cheap and rubbish.

I remove gms. performance and battery life became doubled. And every banking apps working like a hungry dog. Believe me gms is useless and drains your battery and heavy your phone.
