Weekly poll: the Nokia 8.3 5G marks many firsts for HMD, but is the price too ambitious?

05 April 2020
The 8.3 is the first Nokia with 5G connectivity and also the first with a 64MP camera. But €600 sounds a bit steep.

What, They thought they'll be the only product offering 5g? Nice try, the but that's just another dope Mid-range. The world has other better speced or cheaper 5g devices.

As usual, users who hand never used any HMD Nokia Android smartphones even once are bashing them for no reason. For last 15 years I had used only Nokia phones and will definitely look forward to buy this phone later this year. But not early adoptor. Launch price of any phone is always high. Shall wait for price slash after 3-6 months. $500 for 8GB/128GB is good deal for me.

We already know the truth. And they even don't manufacture them. Only few models at the beginning was done by Foxconn. .Now they outsource to the cheaper ones with the cheapest components and overprice them more than double.

Midrange chipset, good for 300$ phones, at 600$ there should be SD865 or at least SD855 and nothing else
60Hz LCD screen (at least if it were OLED), also big and ugly chin and upper bezel
No IP protection, no stereo speakers, no wireless charging
No OIS, no tele camera and useless macro and depth cameras
64GB for 600$ is funny. Even Apple shouldn't do it. 128GB should be minimum for any 300+$ phone.

Yeah. Next time, price it half that, replace macro and depth cameras with a proper tele module (there's no need for 4 modules, 3 are fine) and we're good to go.

Yep they tried to be more interesting than the others on the 5G, thought a price argument should be enough to finally start have some success (especially because the James Bond sponsoring should cost an arm) but no, unfortunately, 8 days after a real bold challenger Xiaomi comes with same setup, better screen (AMOLED vs LCD), and a better OS (MIUI is much more optimized and followed than Android One)

And cherry on cake, A real midrange price of 350 euros...

And that's not finish for HMD, because Huawei after the lunch of P40 in Europe will announce also 5G devices on the market with insane prices because they sold a lot of 5G infrastructures and they need capable users to use them. Oppo with One Plus will be also there....

The beginning of the end, if it didn't start yet for HMD will match to the real worldwide lunch of the 5G...

HMD you played too much with fake promises and your smart marketing but the users will at the end have the last word on you!

That's Apple. HMD's priority is to retain the build quality that Nokia was known for. 5G is expensive, that's why it's priced high.

YUKI93, 05 Apr 20205G is still not rolling worldwide, so I cannot comment much... moreThere are already 5G phones around 200 dollars scheduled for these year. From Realme, Redmi/Xiaomi and even Honor. Obviously not from HMD. Their 5G must be from other galaxy and hyper premium!!! Or that is what they seems to believe or try to make fools believe with these prices... Because aside the 5G bands this phones has nothing for ask that much. Old memory, low storage, no OIS, depth sensor, cheap macro camera, cheap LCD, and asking 650 dollars for 6/64Gb mid-range phone. Good joke. But Aprils fool already passed... Maybe for them is permament. I'm sure that in few months microwave 5G bands will be available in 280 euros phones. Don't worth waste the money in this overpriced junk now.

And more with the actual economy break. Better wait, save money. Care of yourself and later buy cheaper and a better phone. All brands will at some point drops their prices this year due to the actual situation. It is going to take a long time to recover from the Covid-19. In our country it has already been made public that future generations will have to go into debt because of this. Debt contracted by the government to help get out of this situation that those generations will have to pay. Two months standing still an entire country is terrible economically. And more weeks can still go by.

                                  My opinion :
For £600, the 128 GB internal storage + 6 GB RAM should be base option. 20 MP Telefoto with AF should be included. The 64 MP main sensor must have OIS. The depth sensor should be 5 MP instead of 2. 1080p@60fps should be available. The selfie sensor should be 32 MP with AF.

The £649 variant should be 256 GB

5G is still not rolling worldwide, so I cannot comment much on the price. But if HMD Nokia will keep rolling more 5G devices in the future, I can see affordable 5G Android One smartphone along the way.

also, OLEDs use PWM which can be an eyesore for some people. I have mi 9t pro and I'm really satisfied with it, but PWM can be really annoying. On the first days, I had headaches after using it for half an hour. also, dc dimming won't solve the problem completely, it improves the situation but it won't make it disappear.
also, dc dimming drops the color accuracy and brightness. this is not Xiaomi's fault though that's how OLEDs work. so yes, I kinda prefer LCDs because I'm PWM sensitive.
