HMD's Nokia smartphones suffer large drop in shipments as market sees largest decline yet

04 May 2020
HMD's shipments have been on the decline for the last 9 months and this quarter they are nearly half of what they were in Q1 last year.

RIP Nokia HMD. It's been 3 years but until now you have not delivered a product that stands out of the competition. I have waited far too long for you guys but I have decided not to buy any of your products anymore.

potato4k, 05 May 2020HMD should just focus making 4G feature phones with Kai OS,... moreYes . I really want that in India as well . We waited for Nokia 2720 flip for almost an year, still it is not officially released.(Unofficial ones are sold at higher price and different charger and network bands). I want a Kai OS phone with a 2.8" screen like Nokia 2720, but with a qwerty keypad like Jiophone 2 as typing with T9 is really a mess with Asian languages. It is not impossible to make, but no company in the world is making such a device. Jiophone 2 is highly restricted in sales(not sold on stores or public sites like amazon, order cancelled from their own website also as delivery system is not there) and I cannot trust their durability with experience of keypad failure and network issue of Jiophone 1. I want Nokia to make Qwerty Kai OS in India and I will readily buy it.

Clean and stock Android along with regular Monthly Security Updates and Annual OS Updates are plus points of Nokia phones. But poor specifications compared to Price is major drawback of them. Currently I am using Nokia 3 (2017) and want to replace it with Nokia 5.3. But due to that stupid waterdrop notch I changed my mind. All phones except Nokia 9, launched since last year, had that ugly waterdrop notch. Can't Nokia provide thin bezel like Nokia 9 on all their phones. Nokia 8.3 is too costly and I really don't need 5G phone at least for next 2-3 years.

HMD should just focus making 4G feature phones with Kai OS, and sell it worldwide (not just for China or India). Nobody else is doing that so they can capture that market if they want to. They can never compete in the Android smartphone market anymore as they are being overrun by the Chinese OEMs.

They know how to make well build phones, and pure Android is nice, but it's just not enough.
If HMD wants to actually have a place in the current market they have to make bolder decisions in their phones. Their 7.2 for example can't be considered an upgrade, the way older 7 plus had the same processor and a bigger battery, what does that say about it?
They need something that competes not only to Samsung but also brands known for giving specs for little price like Xiaomi if they want to make their numbers to start going up. They loose their status like 8 years ago for not adapting to changes correctly and here they go again with the same old story.

[deleted post]Current Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri will resign August this year ; I think the one U mean is Florian Seiche the CEO of HMD. BTW I think another one should be blamed is the CPO. As I know in early days when HMD established there is a Nokia representative who take a seat as board of directors there. I wonder does he voice out the concern or just sleeping? Any action he /she taken against the consecutive 3 quarters drops in smartphone shipment?!

No matter how poor is the sales it shouldn't be worse than any quarters in 2017. 2017 we know perhaps still a lot of people doesn't notice the return of Nokia brand in smartphone market;but in 2020, even with pandemic it should maintain at least 4.5 million units sold

If this is result in 2017 when HMD just start the business, it's acceptable. But come on, now already 2020! even Realme which start up later was already overtook Nokia. There must be some other factors beside Covid-19. As once a dominant mobile phone player for consecutive 14 years, this result is totally unacceptable!!! Mr Seiche please watch out!

After a promising start, Nokia just keeps churning out garbage devices with outdated specs and features. What did they expect was going to happen?

Their phones are durable but full of crap, weak cameras, unoptimized softwares and pricey for it's categories. Their just uncompetitive

Agree with midrange market. They have no business in flagship. They can't compete.

Go after Samsung's A series or Pixel - quality at mid range price even if not the best specs. Long term software support is cool.

Bootloader locked / unlockable by cash = not a smart choice. Seriously, xiaomi got all of it's market share thanks to it's bootloader policy. Most know that the software has spyware and malware so we just run custom roms on those phones.

All their phones feel like they are 6-12 months behind the competition. Remember when they released the Nokia 9 pureview with a sd845 a month before the 855 released? LOL

                                Management there is clueless.

Dated and old one, generic designs. When you do that, then those prices aren't good anymore and your hardware overpriced.

People want to feel the value they pay, how good the phone is, great cameras, latest powerful SoC, great audio, etc. Not pay for a bunch of software promises that now even suffer uncountable delays. Still to be seen if 9.3 arrives at the fall of this year or if it will be converted in 9.4 for 2021 and so on.

Ironically enough their feature phones are the only decent phones they make yet I can't buy and use any of them since I live in north America, only one I know of that'll work here is the nokia 3310 3g and that came out in 2017. I can understand that north America probably isn't the market for feature phones anymore but c'mon, I want a banana phone. (8110 4g)
