Qualcomm announces Quick Charge 5: 100W+ speed lets you fill a battery to 50% in 5 minutes

27 July 2020
A full charge will take only 15 minutes. The new standard runs 10°C cooler than QC4 while delivering 4 times the power to the battery.

Just imagine if the amount of time, money and energy spent on developing battery charging technologies could be spent on battery retention technology, we could have had batteries that last a week instead of 18 hours.

What's not good with spending $1000 for a phone is having to get it maintenanced due to severely degraded battery because of the unhealthy charging habits. But since you love spending extreme amount of money for repairs on a regular basis, then sure thing. We just don't think that flagships should be repaired occassionally, and they should be all good for at least 3 years of careful use.

For a $1000 phone, they shouldn't be getting maintenanced regularly, so rather than spending fortunes for repairs, I could've invested the same amount for much more meaningful investments.
Besides, with the presence of cheap high capacity power banks, having the need for a quick top off isn't necessary anymore. Leave such speeds for other purposes instead, or at least make sure the battery technology has improved already to handle such wattages.

IpsDisplay, 28 Jul 2020Man people are hating on fast charging for no reason You... moreWell, if it means the battery will maintain more than 90% of its capacity for 5 years or more, and the phone lasts a whole day, then we're good with 5W for safer overnight charging, with less heat and less risk for a swollen battery.

Let's be real here. All super fast chargers would add a considerable amount of heat to the phone, and we all know that Lithium batteries see high temperature as their greatest enemy.

Yep, that's right, quick charging is choice.

I still see many of my workmates charge their phone using from laptop, because you know, hey, it's the same usb. There's still many people do that.

And then, how about adoption rate? Is it easy to adapt this 100w? Or it gonna take another 1-2 before it's widely available. Remember how QC4 was released, and most phone still at QC2 or just 10w. We only see these days getting better when PD is starting widely available.

I take phone to repair shop, phone remains days there (not always possible to do the service at the moment), they will charge me how much they want, the risk they use generic battery (internet is loaded with generic components like batteries and screens).

Xperias, few iphones and few galaxies will slow down charging after 80 or 90%.

Hotncold, 27 Jul 2020Will battery 🔋 charge cycles come down due to such such hig... moreI recently read a lot into battery health, battery degradation and (fast) charging.
From what I read I understood a few things:
Four things are main battery killers for Lithium Polymer and Ion batteries:
                                    1. Charging to unplugged voltage over 4.2V (Using AccuBattery on a few devices now I learned for my devices 4.2V is reached at 80%/87% battery depending on the device, charging to 100% increases unplugged voltage to 4.35V/4.5V. For every 0.1V above 4.2V the amount of charge cycles reduces by 30%/50%. This is unrelated to fast charging, which always reduces charging speed as battery gets more and more full. It is related to continuing to charge to 100% which pushes unplugged voltage above 4.2V)
                                    2. High battery temperatures above 37°C from charging, device/CPU and/or ambient temperature are really bad for battery health, making the battery degrade much faster.
                                    3. High discharge rates are Lithium battery killers, but such high discharge rates will never be reached by smartphones, it only applies to things like flashes for camera's (nót the flash-LEDs in smartphones)
                                    4. Discharging Lithium Polymer and Ion batteries below 3.3V is another killer. According to AccuBattery battery voltages of my devices at 1% battery level are between 3.5V and 3.6V, with the device turning of due to to low voltage before critical minimum voltage for battery health is reached.

Best for battery health is cycling the battery between 20%/25% and 75%/80%, so maximum 60% per charging event. According to what I read this is standard practice in Electric Vehicles to minimize battery degradation (with EV batteries costing $10K+)
So contrary to some other types of batteries, also batteries used in old phones and personal media players, short charges of 10%-50% are GOOD for Lithium battery health and longevity.

Fast charging standards with all their temperature monitoring are not the real Lithium battery killers from what I read.

With good/optimum charging practice Lithium batteries lose 20% of their designed capacity after 800 cycles (one cycle being a full charge of battery capacity), the bad practices mentioned above can reduce this to 200/300 cycles if I remember right. Using AccuBattery info and alarm I'm now at approximately 0.2 cycles of battery wear per day on my smartphone using an 18W fast charger, charging ≥10%-75% once a day, with a short secondary charge mid-day if I'm heavily using my smartphone.

Flagships are all about speed. Not just benchmark speed, but the overall speed (charging speed, camera speed, face/fingerprint unlock speed, etc). So every flagship should come with the latest & greatest tech to improve on all those aspects. Ultra-Fast charging should be the common standard going forward.

Those who are scared of the new tech should just stop buying flagships & stick to budget phones or midrangers that offer lower grade fast charging speeds. Enough said!
