Weekly poll results: under-display cameras are exciting, never mind potential downsides

30 August 2020
Flip up cameras will offer better image quality for your selfies? That's nice, but under-display cams are much cooler and more resilient.

notafanboy, 30 Aug 2020you're in the minority and there will never be a phone... moreIf you started the idea of punch holes at the time before notches, those would who have wanted it would have also been in the minority, but here we are.
Same for Jack removal where peoples wanting the Jack are a MAJORITY, yet it is still removed.
The smartphone industry is totally wonky and stupid, don't ever underestimate its unpredictable path it may take.
Also MANY peoples express their desire of having the front camera gone, and many of those who doesn't want actually think of having no front camera without alternative solution to use both camera and display at the same time.

Like the solution I recently often talk about, being a compact, light and foldable version of this accessory :
https://walyou.com/wp-content/uploads//2010/12/OneMoreFace-1.jpg
Which could be integrated into the phone's back or in the back of the phone's provided case.

And technically there already are phones without front camera, but all of them that I know of have a second display on the back.
Forgetting the Mi Mix Alpha or possible Mi Mix 4 that may never be released, there is the Nubia X, Z20, Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition, Archos Sense 55s.
You can also count foldable phones, like the Huawei Mate X.
And in essence, the Asus Zenfone 6 and Zenfone 7/7 Pro doesn't have selfie camera.

The future is surely retinal projection (Virtual Retinal Display) that will project the image directly into your eyes, giving you amazing Tony Start or Minority Report like holographic interface, which definitely coming as the future :
https://www.marketsandmarkets.com/Market-Reports/screenless-display-market-155203044.html
And on the back of the phone to take advantage of the camera and ToF to track eyes and hands would be ideal, removing the need for a front camera in the process.

I just looked my own country Estonia shops that dont have the motoroa one fusion+ anywhere but i dont need a new phone as of now anyways. I have a site in here that list most of the shops that sell phones and shows the prices to compare each shops where to buy cheaper and i use it to see the prices mostly only. Just to see what price i get it locally and then calculate the price when i buy the phone either in aliexpress or amazon.de

Both phones are too large for me.The phone i have right now will last me more year or 2 but even that is too large for me. 158mm tall is too large. I need something that is at most maximum as 140mm tall.

And Poco f2 pro isnt a flagship kiler when it's in the same price range like the rest of the same hardware specs phones from China brands. Poco F1 was a flagship killer when it come out and cost as low as 290 euro.

I just need to wait when they start to make something for the normal people that want to have a phone that fits in the pocket and have good enough specs that you can play few games on it too and i dont mean that i need to play games a ot. Once a day 10 minutes or so or once in a few days.

That Elephone you posted was too ow specs to care about. Antutu score of 70k is no go. My SD636 is more powerful and that be really dumb to go with something new that is 2 times less powerful

i have never made selfies. I have probably used the selfie camera few times for video calls.
But for my need there are no phone for me that have flipup or popup camera phones as the price range i look for phones. And it's not a choice what so ever to have cameras either small in bezel or popup or flip up. This price range i go for have all of these dear drop or large notch or just hoe in the screen. I hate the al types of notches that just ruin the screen space or just a hoe in the screen like dead pixels. I dont even use my rear camera that much to make sense to buy a phone based on the camera only.

What i want is a compact phone but thats in the history now. Only compact phones that we right now have are either very low budget unknown names or stupid expensive locked garden apple se. Cubot king kong mini is perfect size but that have it's own problems i dont like too. A bit too low specs and too little battery.

Andreidinutu, 30 Aug 2020What's wrong with thesw "HOLES IN THE DISPLAY&quo... moreActually, yes, it does take too much space, I've demonstrated it with my OnePlus 6t teardrop notch (which is quite small), how it impact the notifications :
                    https://imgur.com/a/fu4qLmE

You know how the hole started ? As an attempt to ditch the notch, which itself started with the iPhone X, yes there is the Essential Phone PH1 but Apple notch was independently developed and was the one who inspired Android brands, as after some digging, we can find traces of the early notch concept of the iPhone being way too early for being inspired by the PH1, mainly considering it rely on Face ID.
It is more an attempt at going almost fullscreen while competing with Samsung Iris Scanner, which prior to the S8 was done with regular camera, and then, S8 and iPhone X match the pattern of two competing brands having intels about the other and making a competetiting equivalent.
The thing is, ugly or not, the iPhone notch make senses as Apple only use their upper bar on iOS for statut, the idea isn't a dent on the display, but rather pushing the display around the top bezel to get the statut icons out of the main display area.
Though they should have make the status icons/text on two lines and the area around the notch only matching background color but not accessible to apps.
The idea of the notch is to get the maximum amount of relevant sensors on the front while taking the least amount of space possible.
Then android brands copied it, and of course, rather than copying the idea of the concept : maximum sensor density...
They simply copied the design, which make absolutely no senses to have a large notch for a really low sensor density, which is exactly what happened, though most earlier Android implementation had biometric sensors.
But there is a catch, as I showed, Android use this top bar for BOTH Status (like iOS) AND notifications, and we live in an age where we have many social media and apps, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype, Instagram, Tik Tok, Snapchat, Twitter, Mails, Youtube, Text messages, phone, for just the regular one most peoples are likely to have, add to that all the other things, can be bank related app, weather, Amazon, Reddit and many more, all pushing notifications.
That + status icons make it that every single slot count.
So much so that quickly the trend of notch on Android shrunk quickly until reaching the teardrop notch, in the process loosing every other sensors than the front camera, making it literally that they switched from notch to hole, again, because the notch is to be ditched on Android, it is made as smaller as possible, because it make no senses on such OS.
Had Windows Phone been around, with his top bar also only for status icons, it would have make sense to put a notch on them, but not on Android.
Google themselves had to even quickly put a "notch hiding" feature on Android.

But rather than doing the smart thing, and just helping it along and either pushing the trend to the max and ditching the front camera or switching to thinner bezels (as prior to that, bezel where big, but with thin ones available now, there is no excuses), they stupidly insisted on keeping it that way, making this thing who force to have a single camera giving birth to dual punch holes and pill shaped punch holes to have either a second camera or biometric sensors...
The reaction is universal, those dual or elongated punch holes are really unpopular and hated, now ask yourself, if the punch hole was that great, how and why just making a second one would goes from "something awesome" to the "worst thing" ?

The whole idea to remove a part of the display to go FULLSCREEN is stupid, even the sentence make no senses, and because of the minimum sensor trend the punch hole and teardrop created, 3D facial recognition, Iris scanner and other secure solution are gone, which wouldn't be the case if we simply ditched the front camera and used the main camera and ToF for that purpose.

Hole in the display wouldn't be accepted in ANY other form of display, TV, computer monitor, etc.
Yet on Smartphone where we pay expensive displays and where the space is already limited, why should we have to deal with it ?

At a time where privacy matter more than everything else, those notches, holes and underdisplay thingy are dangerous.
You answered to another comment :
"Ok mr spy who has all secrets on his face"
Well, actually, the facial recognitions made by corporation are quite a huge threat, but moreover, privacy isn't just something in one particular subject, it is a general thing, we need to fight privacy intrusion in every possible points, none are less important, and this isn't as if the front camera taking images of you was a theory, it is a facts, it have been exposed many times now.
Just remember that when you are on the throne dumping one, or using your phone to watch some X video, there IS a picture taken by apps/websites.
And if one day you got blackmailed, you'll only have your eyes to cry.
But Privacy is way more than that, literally it can be a matter of protecting your own liberty, your front camera reveal more than just your face (which is already too much), if you ever posted anything trying to be anonymous, using VPN or anything, well, there is a beautiful picture of your face associated with your post(s), so much for privacy...
And if it wasn't abused and couldn't lead to easy opening for government to goes full dictatorship, it wouldn't be that bad, but it is the case, that's why front camera need to go.
Privacy isn't "a bonus" or just a laughing matter, it could literally one day be the difference between life and death for you and many other peoples.
