Flashback: the Nexus 4 cost less than half what the Pixel 5 costs, but it had a flagship chipset

04 October 2020
Something that the Pixel 5 can't say. The Nexus 4 was one of the first flagship killers and a feat that Google seems unable to repeat.

Still using my Nexus 5 until today, Nexus 5 still the best flagship ever. Qi Charge, 3.5mm head phone jack, convenient size more important is reasonable price. Nowadays phone are way too expensive.

Anonymous, 04 Oct 2020Just buy a OnePlus ! More updates than a Pixel too.One plus is unfortunately over priced now, and no longer a "flagship killer" although it was a great alternative to the nexus line with the op 1-6 being relatively cheap. I don't think op gets any more updates than a pixel would, and if that's somewhat true, it's probably updates to fix their buggy software.

Anonymous, 04 Oct 2020I bet the components have gotten much more expensive since ... moreI doubt that. Sure they invested a lot, but around then prices were lower as well and quality standards were abysmal compared to today.
So even if they didn't become rich, they didn't break the bank either

OwnFix3, 04 Oct 2020I'm telling you. We've gone downhill from there. ... moreAll because of the tall screen aspect ratio and the thought that bezel is an outdated design.

Hanif Fikri, 04 Oct 2020Lol nice try! ads can be disabled in Xiaomi phoneAda can be disabled? I own a Xiaomi phone and I did try to disabled it. Looks successful at the beginning, but it came back after a while. The same thing happened after I repeat.

Anonymous, 04 Oct 2020You want cheap flagship spec with the same bad quality nowa... moreXiaomi user here. The first thing I did after getting a Redmi Note 7 was literally unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom ROM. Never went back to MIUI after that. MIUI is good and all but it just feels bloated. The ads can be disabled (and afaik they're only there in Redmi phones, not Mi phones) but it just feels heavy.

Yeah I'm not liking this constant bitching about the Pixel 5's price. The title of this article is ridiculous, why not compare a flagship chipset smartphone then with a flagship chipset smartphone now.

Let's take the Oneplus 8 for example. That too started at $699 and apart from the flagship chipset, the Pixel 5 offers a lot more: wireless charging, exclusive Pixel features, better camera, better design (subjective of course), mmWave 5G.

In Europe, the Pixel 5 starts at €613 in Germany in Mediamarkt. That's with the Bose QC 35 II included if you buy one before November 20 if It recall correctly.

So stop bitching about the price, you've proven your point. It's more expensive than everybody thought it would be and $599-649 would've been a way better price to launch at, but it is what it is. I for one really like what they're offering and might just drive to Germany to get one. (This would be my first Pixel phone)

it had a flagship processor, glass back, and a cool design, when companies used to care about making a good phone instead of being greedy and removing features for a better profit

Does anyone have any idea why every modern phone for the last few years have the same rounded cornered rectangle shape & not a curvy top & bottom like nexus 4? Curvy top & bottom would be very extremely comfortable in holding the phone in landscape mode

google phones was always flawed with problems except galaxy nexus,to me google aint care about quality or spec only they care profit from their outrageous asking price for nexuses and pixels, nexus 4 was expensive outside US,had poor baterry life, back glass cracked from itself and so on

I bet the components have gotten much more expensive since then.
But even then, I think google was openly losing money on those cheap nexus phones.
With the pixel line, it seems that they actually try to be profitable.

Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 5x. I still have a functional Nexus 5 for playing Youtube videos for the kids. Weren't for it's small battery/life and lack of expandable storage, I would have been using till today. The LCD display on the Nexus 5 is simply sharper than my Samsung S8+ and the colors are noticeably cleaner especially on plain, flat, full screen color.
Additional value to the N5 when they released the HDR+ camera, the first time I became satisfied with smartphone photography
There are plenty rumors that Google doesn't make or loses money on the Nexus but it is a huge reason to get into Android. The Pixels are just poor value that if I had to choose between Pixels or iPhones, I'd rather pay more for an iPhone
