Apple reportedly had to choose between 5G and 120Hz for iPhone 12 lineup and it picked 5G

Both increase power draw from the battery and having both would have had a major impact on endurance.

So.. they picked a feature that is not really even useful for at least the next year? When is 5g actually even going to be widespread?

I haven't used a 60hz device in more than a year and even just scrolling in the browser at 60hz makes my eyes hurt and makes me sick akin to motion sickness. I guess YMMV, but for me that's a big deal, just like other people complain about screen flickering and lack of DC dimming - it doesn't bother me but I acknowledge that might not be the case for everyone.

I think the difference is really small and it’s not something i notice in normal usage if i’m not really trying to see the difference. I use both of these daily and never felt wish my iPhone would be 120hz. I don’t mind if i get 120hz, but it’s not something i really value.

That's like saying that people because used low-res CRT TVs and monitors for decades and didn't complain, there's no really need for AMOLED screens or high resolutions. Or keeping your screen barely visible coz high brightness and HDR consume more battery and people didn't complain about 300 nit for years.

And given that nowadays with quick charging most phones can be charged to 50%+ by the time you make yourself a coffee or take a dump - 10-20% higher battery consumption is nothing.

In any case, I'm currently using a vivo iqoo Z1 and the phone can be used on 60hz, 90hz or 144hz. On 90hz even, the battery life is significantly curtailed in comparison to 60gz. I don't have figures. I just know by the feeling that I have when using it. It's running out way quicker so I have left it on 60hz. It's all a fad. Yeah it's better but doesn't really matter. Phones have operated on 60hz refresh rates for years and nobody really cared or said that it's far too slow or lags too much. That's just people looking to complain or moan about something.

We have to choose that,we have to choose this if you want this you can't have that blah blah blah typicall appkle🥴🥴

Anonymous, 12 Oct 2020Funny how iPad have had 120hz screen for few years and lack... moreThat's because the android fanboys with tablets didn't have tablets costing $1000+. But now in a day and age where $300 phones have high refresh rate screens, Apple has really dropped the ball. And it's not just for gaming as 120hz is super smooth in all menus, the browser - everywhere.

The only people that say it doesn't matter are just trying to justify their splurge for one of the new iphones or have never tested it. I have an ipad pro and it's so much smoother than any iphone. And as my laptop and phone are also high refresh rate, it's literally headache inducing to go back to 60hz. Even if for some reason people can't see the huge difference right away, once you get used, it's really hard to go back.

They will wait until iPhone 13 to add higher refresh rate, so that they can spread out the reason for people to upgrade again next year. They can't upgrade everything at once. What are they gonna add to entice people if they add that this year?

Maybe it matters if you're hardcore gamer on mobile? For day to day use, I honestly don't know if it would matter for me. Everything on iPhone is already so smooth at 60Hz I really don't see the need. Especially not coz it'll be at expense of battery. Apple just has a really good blend of general smoothness and perfecly timed and animated menus and items that it just feels amazing. I have a 2 generations old iPhone and it's as snappy as it was when new back in the day. And that's what most users really need or want. Sure it's tempting, but is it really needed?

Apple has been lagging the competition for several years now, 120Hz is a marked improvement over 60Hz, difficult to imagine the high end iPhone of 2020 will lack this feature.
